Music On Belle Isle Group (MObig) presents River Blast! 2019, with free concerts on Sunday evenings, beginning June 23 and running through August 25, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Belle Isle State Park.Greater Detroit is home to many passionate and talented non-profes-
sional musicians who play in concert bands. A few of those musicians formed the group MObig, dedicated to returning summer band con-certs to Belle Isle and to exploring the restoration/reconstruction of the Remick Band Shell.“After seeing the Belle Isle Band Shell in such bad shape, a group of
music lovers decided that maybe we need to get bands back on Belle Isle. Until the 1980's, there were regular concerts on Belle Isle,” said Cheryl Huff, Vice-President of MObig. “Currently we have 8 bands play-ing for free. The concerts are also free. We hope it will become a family tradition again. Our goal is to raise enough money to rebuild the Band Shell,” Huff added. So far, this summer’s MObig schedule will include:June 23, Farmington Community BandJune 30, Motor City Brass BandJuly 21, Novi Concert BandJuly 28, Plymouth Community BandAugust 4, Warren Concert BandAugust 11, Canton Concert BandAugust 18, Five Lakes Silver BandAugust 25, Birmingham Concert Band For information and a complete concert schedule see mobigmusic.

AROUND THE CITY
Before Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, so-called “organized” baseball was a segregated sport that banned African American players. During this era of discrimination, Major League Baseball stadiums were often off-limits to Negro League teams as well. Locally, the Detroit Stars
played at Mack Park on the city’s east side from 1919 to 1929, before moving in 1930 to Hamtramck Stadium, one of the few remaining major Negro League ballparks in America today. The new exhibition Detroit
Stars & The Negro Leagues, organized by the Detroit Historical Society’s Black Historic Sites Committee in partnership with the Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium, marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Detroit Stars and showcases the remarkable saga of Detroit’s black baseball history. It opens on June 15 at the Detroit His-torical Museum. Admission is free.About the exhibition: Negro League teams and their legendary players, including the Stars’
Hall of Fame outfielder Norman Turkey Stearnes (his Cooperstown plaque is shown), will be featured in rich, graphic display panels, in-cluding a life-sized painting of Stearnes by acclaimed Negro Leagues artist Phil Dewey. Upon entering the gallery, visitors will see a display dedicated to the
history of women in Negro League Baseball. The exhibition will also include artifacts, memorabilia and a historic timeline of black base-ball in Detroit. It will be on display through September 29.Celebrate the Detroit Stars & The Negro Leagues with an opening
reception on Saturday, June 15 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Detroit His-torical Museum, complete with hot dogs and refreshments. That eve-ning, the Detroit Tigers will host the Cleveland Indians at Comerica Park, making this the perfect tailgate-style pregame party. The reception will kick off with opening remarks from members
of the Black Historic Sites Committee, followed by Turkey Stearnes’ daughter Joyce Stearnes Thompson and Friends of Historic Ham-tramck Stadium founder Gary Gillette. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the museum at (313) 833-1805 or visit
detroithistorical.org. The Detroit Historical Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Parking in the Museum’s lot is $9 at all times. The Detroit Historical Museum is located at 5401 Woodward Ave.
(NW corner of Kirby) in Midtown Detroit's Cultural District.
It’s summer in the city, and music for every taste will be highlighted this month in honor of Black Music Month; you will delight with the sounds of jazz, pop, gospel, R&B, hip-hop, classical and even opera. Music concerts are everywhere this month, so take full advantage
of all of the wonderful sounds of music and new music experiences that are just waiting for you to enjoy. Some of these events are ab-solutely free. This is your chance to experience some new music or the music that you love. On June 7, 1979, more than 40 years ago President Jimmy Carter
designated the month of June to be the month of black music. Black Music Month is highlighted with various events urging everyone to recognize the contribution of America’s black music artists. June is a time to collectively revel in the many forms of music from gospel to hip-hop: African-American musicians, singers, and producers. Let’s all celebrate the music, while we’re entertained by the sound; because Detroit has some of the best of the best. And I would be remiss at this point if I didn’t mention our own homegrown Motown sound. “It’s always important to recognize the contributions of African
American culture and American culture," says Oliver Ragsdale, Jr., President, The Carr Center. "Any time we can celebrate this rich cul-ture we should take the opportunity. It’s important that the breadth of black music be known; black musicals, black operas, chamber music, hip-hop, jazz, blues and pop."Ragsdale continues, “At the Carr Center, we celebrate black music
all year long. Most recently, The Carr Center presented the Michigan Premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ sacred celebration The Abyssinian Mass: A Gospel Celebration, music from Duke Ellington: A Concert of Sacred Music and we also celebrated the Detroit Bass Legends; Ron Carter, Paul Chambers and James Jamerson, Jr. Next year, we will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Harlem Renaissance.”There are so many concerts and performances this month that you
will try to attend them all and it will be well worth the effort. Here is a brief overview of what to expect this month: Don’t forget to stop by the Charles H. Wright Museum, you will be
delighted at some of the outstanding offerings that are featured this month and they're all free; noteworthy is Juneteenth Jubilee 2019 on June 15th from 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. Experience history, family fun, culture, food and entertainment.
Workshops and presentations, dance and musical performances, a full marketplace full of vendors, Zumba; and a Kids Zone with activi-ties, and arts & crafts. A Juneteenth Jubilee Afterglow will be held from 6-9 p.m. For Jubilee
ticket information, see [email protected]. And by all means, don’t miss the grand finale of this music filled
month. The 13th Annual Detroit River Days Festival will be held June 21-23 in a new location on the West Riverfront and feature more than 50 music acts. What a way to wrap-up the month with some of the biggest names in the music industry. (See Page 1 for more info.)The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre (formerly Chene Park) has a
long list of artists appearing this month, including Charlie Wilson, who will appear on Saturday, June 15 and Sunday June 16 at 8 p.m. Take the time to enjoy the music…Enjoy Black Music Month!

SYMPHONIC NEWS
This coming Saturday will mark the beginning of the 26th season of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festi-val. The event will take place
at the Seligman Performing Arts Center. An opening night dinner will take place in ad-dition to the music.Among the cornerstones of
this series is the complete cycle of Beethoven String Quartets. On opening night, we will
be listening to three of those. They will be performed by the Emerson String Quartet (pictured), one of the top en-sembles of its kind.Paul Watkins, who is the cel-
list of the group, is also the artistic director of the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festi-val, a position he has held for the past few years. The Three Quartets of Op.
59 were commissioned by Prince Andrey Razumovsky, then the Russian ambassador to Vienna. They represent the beginning of Beethoven's middle period quartets. In those quartets one can
discern a rare Russian accent
of Beethoven, as numbers 1 and 2 contain recognizable Russian themes. This occa-sion will feature numbers 1 and 3 of that set. Between them will be the
Quartet Op. 18 No. 1, which is the first among Beethoven quartets. That early work is one of 6 in that opus dedi-cated to Haydn, who was Beethoven’s teacher and mentor. On Sunday, June 16, 6:30
p.m., at Kirk in the Hills, the cycle of the Beethoven string quartets will continue (2, 4, and 8). More events at that same venue will take place, featuring additional Beethoven quartets – on Tuesday and Wednesday (June 18-19). On Thursday, June 20, pia-
nists Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung will perform works by Debussy, Poulenc, Schubert and Ravel. Some of those events offer a
Prelude – a piece performed by a younger group of artists. There are many other
events of that series out-side the regular local ven-ues. Among those, there is a
mini-series at the Kerrytown Concert House in Ann Arbor, consisting of 3 events. The first of those will take place on Friday, June 21, with DSO violinist Kimberly Kaloya-nides Kennedy, violinist Eu-gene Drucker and cellist Paul Watkins – both from the Em-erson String Quartet, and the Ivalas Quartet. They will be performing
works by Janáček, Kodály and Mendelssohn. More on that series – next
week. For more details – visit greatlakeschambermusic.org/ and kerrytownconcert-house.com/.As we continue to look for-
ward, we should not forget some of the musical achieve-ments that we have wit-nessed in recent years. For instance, the advancements that have occurred in the organization of Tuesday Mu-sicale of Detroit are worth noting. The Ruth Laredo funding
has aided greatly in estab-lishing younger performers of quality. We have just re-cently heard two university students, Heather Gu, piano,
a student of Logan Skelton at U of M. Skelton is a renowned pianist and musician, a great influence. Anita Dumar, vio-lin, is a student of Danielle Belen at U of M. Both young performers exhibited stun-ning abilities in technique, musical understanding, and artistic interpretation. I hope that we will continue
to hear them in the future. I would also like to take advan-
tage of this opportunity to praise seasoned pianist Ma-ria Meirelles for her artistry, who performed on the series earlier with DSO concert-master Yoonshin Song, who will be departing from us for a new position with the Houston Symphony in Texas. I am looking forward to an-other year of great accom-plishments by the group of Tuesday Musicale.

MILD HAMMERTOE QUESTION: My eight year old daughter seems to have slightly deformed toes. They curl under at the tip and the middle one is partially obscured by the one next to it. Is this anything to be concerned about? ANSWER: Few people have perfectly formed toes. However, because something is common doesn’t mean it should be ignored. An out-of-line toe can interfere with walking and be the source of a lifetime of chronic corns.
Your podiatrist may prescribe orthoses or fitted inserts to restore normal foot function and remove pressure from the cramped area, or he may advise a wait and see attitude — only an examination will determine the best course.

Ellison, esq. constantly host activities that represent God’s love. The joy of being Christian is to love everyone. The nation’s communities need more events that bring people to-gether to have good memories. If the people who are the church don’t model love, then who will? All are welcome at 3426 Puritan Avenue for the community fair as well as every Sunday at 11 a.m.

Men in Black InternationalA Review by Paul Arlon
It's hard to believe that the original Men in Black is a full 22 years old. Starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones as the original black-clad agents of the most secret govern-ment 'police' force on the planet, the story of a mismatched buddy team that dealt with interplanetary visitors was strong enough to carry three movies. The first of the trio was released in 1997, MiB2 in 2002, and the final Smith and Jones
(anybody else remember the '60's horse opera with those same names in the title? But, I digress...) version landed in theatres in 2012. And, didn't we all think that this tale had run its course? Well, what might be closer to the truth, is that Hollywood has run out of ideas. Looking at the Top Ten movies out right now, six of them are sequels. This latest incarnation of the MiB title gets tagged with International, and we see that
the secret agency, once wholly located stateside, has been re-focused to have offices throughout the world — Marrakesh, London, Paris, Naples, etc. And, a new buddy team, too. Tessa Thompson as Agent M, is on the team because she'd tenaciously sniffed out the agency's existence, passionately wanting nothing more in life than to be a WiB. She gets sent to London by the hardcase female head of the Brooklyn office, Agent O
(anybody believe her name is a coincidence?), played by Emma Thompson. There, in an office led by High T (Liam Neeson), she's buddied-up with Agent H (Chris Hemsworth), now a dodgy lackadaisical version of his former self. Together, Agents H & M find themselves trying to secure a planet-killing weapon and
keep it out of the hands of an enemy race called The Hive (much like Star Trek's Borg). Look for the voice of Kumail Nanjani as Pawny, and a three-armed Rebecca Ferguson as Riza, H's criminal alien ex. Written by Matt Holloway and Art Marcum and directed by F. Gary Gray, we'll probably
see this same set-up again. With SFX and weapons that reminded me of Ghostbusters, and aliens that reminded me of the cartoon Futurama, what I can truthfully say, is that MiB International reminded me of the previous three MiB movies. A saw-quel, so to speak.
