Bushfire Emergency Management and Evacuation Plan Last week, I met with Maria Spindler, the Department’s Work Health and Safety Consultant to review and update our Bushfire procedures. The plan has been communicated with staff and our procedures were discussed at the last P&C meeting. The evacuation location for staff and students is the Wisemans Ferry Bowling Club, if it is safe for us to relocate to this location. As a last resort our ‘Shelter in Place’ location is the 4/5/6 classroom. Throughout, the bushfire season staff will monitor the ‘Fires Near Me’ app and liaise with the appropriate authorities to ensure we are well informed about emerging threats. If there is a catastrophic fire danger warning this will result in the school temporarily ceasing operations for the day. This rating is communicated after school hours so families will be informed via SMS messaging and/or Facebook. If a catastrophic fire danger warning is issued and the school temporarily ceases operations for the day, our priority is that students remain safe in their home environments and assist their families with their own Bush Fire Management Plan. If you require your child to complete school work on this day all students have access to learning tasks on Studyladder – we will ensure that their passwords are sent home. In the event of a bushfire threat to our school, families will be notified and updated via SMS messaging and Facebook. Rest assured, the safety of our students and staff will always be the first priority should an emergency arise. Please also ensure that emergency contact details are up to date.

Waste Free Lunch Day – Tuesday 12th November On Tuesday November 12 we will be participating in the Waste Free Lunch Day which is an initiative of The Hills Shire Council. This program will teach students about the importance of reducing, re-using and recycling. Waste free lunches support the use of reusable food and drink containers, utensils and organic waste. They discourage the use of disposable packaging such as pre-packaged/individual servings of food, plastic bags, disposable utensils, plastic straws, food wrapped in cling wrap/foil and other single use items that end up in landfill. Mrs Longhurst and the SRC will be co-ordinating the day with the assistance and support of all of our teachers. Please support this educational program by providing a waste free lunch box.

Stage 3 Great Aussie Bush Camp In week one of this term the students in Years 5 and 6 headed off to Kincumber to the Great Aussie Bush Camp. Our students had a fantastic time and Mrs Harris came back with glowing reports about the behaviour and participation of all of our students. I am extremely proud of the students’ willingness to get involved in all of the activities and their exemplary behaviour. I would like to thank Mrs Harris for accompanying the students to camp. For our students to have these experiences it means that a staff member is required to give up time with their own families to attend and look after our students.

I had the pleasure of taking the stage three students to the Great Aussie Bush Camp in week one. I say it was a pleasure because every one of our kids completely embraced camp life. They mixed beautifully with the kids from the other 6 small schools, especially with all the team building activities. They stepped out of their comfort zones and joined in some extreme activities such as rock and tree climbing and the giant swing. I do believe the mud run and commando were probably all our favourites. Thank you stage 3, you should be so proud of yourselves, I know I was proud to take you. Mrs Harris

Korean journalist visit On Thursday October 24, we had a visit from Tah Heh Kim, a journalist from South Korea. Tah Heh was doing a story about small schools in Australia. In South Korea, there are a lot of small school but the government in trying to close them down and encourage them to merge and create larger schools. Tah Heh wanted to gain an understanding of how our small schools in Australia operate and are able to provide educational and extra-curricular activities for the students. During her visit Tah Heh spoke with myself, the teachers and Rachael our P&C president. She watched our choir and dance group perform and took the opportunity to speak with Samantha and Kaitlyn in year 6. Both Samantha and Kaitlyn spoke about the positive aspects of attending a small school, including the friendships and bonds that develop between all students, the caring nature of all students and the extra opportunities that students have in a small school.

Hawkesbury Dance Festival Congratulations to our students who did a wonderful job with their performance of ‘Hall of Fame’ at the Hawkesbury Dance Festival. Despite the traffic congestion on route to the venue and some nervous performance butterflies, all of our dancers did a fantastic job and I was one very proud principal - it certainly was one of those ‘goose bump’ moments. Thank you to all of our parents, carers and grandparents who joined us on the evening and transported students to this event. A big shout out to Rachael for her dedication to our dance group and her hard work in choreographing the performance and teaching our students the moves. We are extremely grateful for your assistance and we could not provide our students with this opportunity without your commitment – thank you!

Is it a Bird? Is it a Plane? No it’s the Paper Pilots Last week we were fortunate enough to have a visit from James Norton, a member of Australia’s first and only Paper Plane Team. Dylan Parker and James Norton are the inspirational young men behind the hit Australian movie Paper Planes. Dylan and James have turned Paper Pilots into a fulltime business providing the opportunity for schools across Australia to be a part of their life experience. James visited our school and shared his and Dylan’s story and engaged with all students as we investigated the science of flight. The students were taught how to fold two different types of planes which we tested in the flight zone on the hill. Lots of fun was had and many of the students are still practising their paper plane folding skills. (see over for photo)

Day for Daniel Last Friday, all students at Wisemans Ferry, participated in child safety lessons as a part of our PDH program (Personal Development and Health) and in support of Day for Daniel. Students in K/1/2 talked about the importance of having a safety network of people to talk to, how their bodies feel and react in an unsafe situation. We learnt how to Recognise, React and Report and talked about our emotions. The 3/4/5/6 class participated in Australia's Biggest Child Safety Lesson hosted by Denise and Bruce Morcombe. They participated in activities focussing on bullying and internet safety. The topics covered addressed important messages about child safety.

Year 4 Enrichment Day – Long Neck Lagoon Yesterday our Year 4 students headed off to Long Neck Lagoon Environmental Education Centre for an Enrichment

Program. The students worked together in small teams to find out ‘Who killed Kermit?’ They investigated a freshwater

ecosystem by collecting and identifying aquatic animals, using microscopes and water testing kits. They discussed their

findings and developed strategies to protect the wetland. The outcome of this scientific investigation was that we as

humans are responsible for killing Kermit. Mrs Harris reported that all students had a fantastic day and that they once

again were exceptional ambassadors for our school by demonstrating outstanding teamwork skills and perfect

behaviour - congratulations and well done Year 4!
