Black History Month

General Hazel Johnson-Brown● Entered the Harlem Hospital School of

Nursing and graduated in 1950, swiftly rising to the position of head nurse of the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital

● Johnson-Brown brown joined the U.S. Army in 1955 just as the military was being desegregated. In 1959,

● Johnson-Brown earned a nursing degree from Villanova University and a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Teachers College in 1963.

Doug Williams● In 1988, the Washington Redskins and the Denver

Broncos clashed in San Diego, Calif. for Super Bowl XXII. Quarterback Doug Williams led the Skins to victory, becoming the first Black starting quarterback to play in the big game and the first Black quarterback to be named Super Bowl MVP.

● Williams became the first player in Super Bowl history to pass for four touchdowns in a single quarter and also the first to score four in a half. Williams threw for a total of 340 yards and won the MVP award.

● Williams was named to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Homer Gilliam Phillips● Attorney, Civic Leader. Homer Gilliam Phillips, moved

to St. Louis in 1904. ● Philips was among the many black taxpayers angry

with the city government because their tax dollars went to support hospitals where only white medical workers could be trained.

● In 1922, Phillips supported an $87 million bond issue. His primary focus was to secure $1 million of this bond issue to construct a new hospital for blacks in North St. Louis.

● The hospital attracted many of the top black medical professionals of the time and developed into one of the nation's leading African-American hospitals. Its staff was dedicated to both the hospital and the advancement of medical science.

Cheryl Mills● Cheryl Mills made headlines this week in 1999 when

she addressed the U.S. Senate during President Bill Clinton’s explosive impeachment trial.

● Mills, a young attorney at the time, also made history by becoming the first Black person to address the Senate during an impeachment hearing. She joined Clinton’s staff as Associate Counsel in 1993.

● In December 1998, Clinton was impeached by the U.S. House of Representatives on two charges. Mills’ opening statements humanized Clinton as a flawed person but stopped short of calling him a criminal.

● Some observers even stated that she might have swayed the Senate to acquittal behind her words and the delivery of her statements
