Objective:
• Students will be able to write two quality thesis statements of different types about their personal development and goals.
Warmup:
• Share with your partner SOMETHING THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD BETTER after watching Promises.
Get out a sheet of lined paper. Title “Thesis Writing”

SPECIFIC
Often, students write theses that REFER to the question, without
ANSWERING the question:
“There were many causes of WWI.”
“It is clear that geography had an impact on WWII.”
“The Cold War affected people in
other nations.”
DEBATABLE
Prompt: What is a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict?
“By looking at the settlement problem, the terrorist attacks, and a two-state solution, it is clear that a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is possible.”

• Set up the condition/context/reason for the question
• State the writer’s opinion/position• Ex: “Despite the seemingly endless
violence, there is a possible solution to the conflict that includes _____, ____, and ______.”
