As it is spread amongst junior and senior year, these classes are considered separate. Dental I is the intro course while, “Dental II are grads of Dental I who come back and learn the medical cur- riculum and have an option of going out on Co-op,” says Spellicy. Dental II is consid- ered an advanced course for heavily interested students. After Dental II, students are able to earn a college credit in Medical Terminol- ogy. They will also become OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certifed and are able to be- gin the Co-op program, in which they work in real dentistry o°ces. Whether a student has interest in being a dental assistant or an orthodontist, this course gives students a step up for college and future interning opportunities. Spellicy explains, “I have had many students go forward to work in dental ces, become hygienists, and one currently in dental school to become a dentist.” Medical Students Receive Real World Experience With the medical feld as a pillar of our society, many students find themselves longing to be a part of it, and aid in everyday societal medical needs. One of Lake Shore’s Career Technology Education courses, taught by Hilda Martin-Lynch and Deborah Spellicy, high- lights the aspects of med- ical programs. Health Sci- ence I and II are classes designed for juniors and seniors interested in get- ting involved in the medi- . cal feld “[This course] helps pre- pare students who are in- terested in the healthcare feld. Students learn human anatomy, medical termi- nology and basic skills that can be applied in all areas of healthcare,” says Martin- Lynch, the primary head of the Health Science depart- ment. Divided amongst two years of school, these classes are split into an in- troductory course, being Health Science I, and a class based on expanding the knowledge learned in the prior course, known as Health Science II. Health Science I is ma- jorly focused on medical terminology and the basics of health. Students learn about anatomy, disease, and body systems. The top- ics taught in this class in- clude basic healthcare skills such as taking temperature/ pulses, proper hand wash- ing procedure, bed mak- ing, and putting on per- sonal protective equipment. As such, they’re tested on these skills throughout the class, to guarantee their fu- ture careers are one flled with proper practice and knowledge. Health Science II of- fers a more in-depth look into medical careers. This course o˛ers a wide array of job shadowing for their stu- dents, unlike the prior in- troduction class. The class goes to Beaumont Hospi- tal in Grosse Pointe and ShorePointe Village, which is an assisted-living facil- ity. They get a true feel of not only the medical world outside of the classroom, but the professional aspect as well. This o˛ers credi- bility to the student for fu- ture interning, college, and job opportunities. Because of this, this class is for stu- dents who are serious about going into a career in the medical feld. In Introduction to Mar- keting, students learn the basics of marketing, in- cluding marketing func- tions, marketing strate- gies, advertising, and the legal and ethical responsi- bilities of a marketer. In- troduction to Marketing helps students prepare for the more challenging classes: Marketing and Sales and Marketing Man- ager. Marketing and Sales gives students a chance to demonstrate their mar- keting skills by working in the Shorian Shop (Lake Shore’s school store) as well as learning in the classroom. Taking the Marketing classes are extremely ben- efcial for the students as they can take the classes with no prior require- ments, compete in compe- titions, and gain hands-on experience with business skills. By participating in a marketing competition, students learn how their marketing skills measure up to other students, and simulate a real-life busi- ness experience. This year Lake Shore High School won second place at the Michigan First Credit Union (MFCU) headquar- ters by presenting a mar- keting plan to a panel of marketing executives. When asked, Jon Tomlian, a senior and one of the stu- dents who competed for second place, stated that, “It was tough… I got to practice my public speak- ing and I enjoyed going up there and presenting.” The students also have the chance to attend a seminar at businesses in the area, where they learn about the types of busi- ness practices used by the marketing executives of the business world. Design Class Allows for Creative Atmosphere Students interested in design, architecture, or me- chanics might fnd them- selves out of place in “nor- mal” high school classes, but not at Lake Shore. Me- lissa Todaro’s shop and computer lab classrooms are well equipped for stu- dents to explore skills that they might use in future ca- reers as graphic designers or mechanical engineers. Dental Students Shine Lake Shore High School
