The groundbreaking was held March 14. Benedictine is partnering with SCG Fields & FieldTurf to construct Savannah’s largest NCAA/FIFA regulation-size synthetic-turf athletic field to be used for soccer, lacrosse, and football. The field will be 80 yards wide and will include 1,500 bleacher seats on the east side, concession/ restrooms, and an athletic plaza. Thirty-three students from Aquinas High School and 15 from St. Mary on the Hill School, both in Augusta, entertained their audience with their pro- duction of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The King and I March 28-29. St. Anne-Pacelli Catholic School students in the Class of 2020 were pre- sented with rings during a special Junior Ring & Recommitment Ceremony following a grades 6-12 Mass at St. Anne Church in Columbus April 2. Juniors are encouraged to wear their rings facing inward during their remaining time at St. Anne-Pacelli School. At graduation, students are instructed to turn their rings so they face outward — a sign to society and the world of their commitment and willingness to share their talents, skills, faith and service with others. On Fridays they enjoy the privilege of a spirit day and can wear jeans and a team shirt of their choosing. Nearing the end of its second year in existence, 80 percent of the 8th graders advanced into St. Teresa’s High School. Expectations for next year are along the same lines. Mount de Sales Academy seniors Lacie Kunselman and Isabelle Sharon were selected as the overall winners of the Bibb County Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) students. They each selected a faculty member to honor as their STAR teachers: Lacie chose math teacher Sarah Corum and Isabelle chose science teacher Georgia Olson. To obtain the STAR nomination, students must have the highest score in a single sitting on the three-part SAT taken through the November test date of their senior year, and be in the top 10 percent or among the top 10 students of their class based on grade point average. Savannah’s St. Vincent’s Academy/Benedictine Spring Musical’s version of “It only takes a moment,” from its production of Hello Dolly! won a Georgia High School Musical Theatre Award for a new category added this year, the “11 O’ Clock Number Award,” awarded to an impactful musical number from Act 2 where a main character expresses an important emo- tional realization. Fashioned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards (Shuler Hensley Awards) celebrate excellence in high school musical theater across the state of Georgia. With this award is an invitation to be one of seven schools to perform live at the awards ceremony, which will be broadcast from the Cobb Galleria Performing Arts Center live on GPB on April 18 at 7 p.m. Photograph by Paul Camp.
