Dear School Community, Our school is a great place to be!This is a comment from one of our students at the Mayfair on Sunday. Congratulations to the entire school community on another fantastic Mayfair on Sunday. The significant work that took place over the last 6 months came to fruition. The generous input by families, staff and students showcased our school and the terrific community spirit embedded at Bellbrae Primary School. We had a lot of feedback from families from other schools comment on the wonderful atmosphere, culture and vibe within our school. Although not finalised, we estimate we raised $50,000. As communicated earlier in the year, these funds will go into improving our school grounds, specifically upgrading our outdoor areas and playgrounds. Once again, a huge thank you to Belinda and Judy who plan and coordinate our Mayfair. Their passion, commitment and enthusiasm is the catalyst for the success of the Mayfair. I also thank all members of the Bellbrae Primary School community for their individual and collective contributions to the 2019 Mayfair. Student Learning: Our Year 6 students have started term 2 with lots of momentum after a great term 1! The first 2 weeks have included the Bike Education program, culminating with an on-road ride to Torquay. Students have chosen their winter sport of either Soccer, Football or Netball for the City to Surf Lightning Premiership. The 2019 Bellbrae Debating team is currently being formed, which will be busy preparing for their competition to begin on May 19 th . To complement their theme topic of Australian Diversity, the Yr 6s’ will visit The Melbourne Immigration Museum on the 25 th of May. Another term full of fantastic learning opportunities for our Year Six students! It’s not Okay to be away! Regular attendance at school plays a vital role for students to achieve their academic potential, as well as setting up a wonderful foundation for their social and emotional development. We hope the table below highlights the importance of regular attendance to school. How many days has your child missed this semester? 0 - 6 This is within the normal range. The child can take advantage of the teaching and learning opportunities available to them. 7 10 This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss over one year of schooling between Foundation and Year 10. 11 - 20 This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss up to two years of schooling between Foundation and Year 10. To miss two years of school between Foundation and Year 10 places significant risk on any student. It goes without saying that regular absenteeism from school won’t do your child any favours. Dear School Community,

“Our school is a great place to be!” This is a comment from one of our students at the

Mayfair on Sunday. Congratulations to the entire school community on another

fantastic Mayfair on Sunday. The significant work that took place over the last 6 months

came to fruition. The generous input by families, staff and students showcased our

school and the terrific community spirit embedded at Bellbrae Primary School. We had

a lot of feedback from families from other schools comment on the wonderful

atmosphere, culture and vibe within our school. Although not finalised, we estimate we

raised $50,000. As communicated earlier in the year, these funds will go into improving

our school grounds, specifically upgrading our outdoor areas and playgrounds. Once

again, a huge thank you to Belinda and Judy who plan and coordinate our Mayfair.

Their passion, commitment and enthusiasm is the catalyst for the success of the Mayfair.

I also thank all members of the Bellbrae Primary School community for their individual

and collective contributions to the 2019 Mayfair.

Student Learning: Our Year 6 students have started term 2 with lots of momentum after a

great term 1! The first 2 weeks have included the Bike Education program, culminating with

an on-road ride to Torquay. Students have chosen their winter sport of either Soccer, Football

or Netball for the City to Surf Lightning Premiership. The 2019 Bellbrae Debating team is

currently being formed, which will be busy preparing for their competition to begin on May

19th. To complement their theme topic of ‘Australian Diversity’, the Yr 6s’ will visit The

Melbourne Immigration Museum on the 25th of May. Another term full of fantastic learning

opportunities for our Year Six students!

It’s not Okay to be away! Regular attendance at school plays a vital role for students to

achieve their academic potential, as well as setting up a wonderful foundation for their social

and emotional development. We hope the table below highlights the importance of regular

attendance to school.

How many days has your child missed this semester?

0 - 6 This is within the normal range. The child can take advantage of the teaching and

learning opportunities available to them.

7 – 10 This attendance rate is below average. A child with this attendance rate could miss

over one year of schooling between Foundation and Year 10.

11 - 20 This is a poor attendance rate. A child with this attendance rate could miss up to two

years of schooling between Foundation and Year 10.

To miss two years of school between Foundation and Year 10 places significant risk on any

student. It goes without saying that regular absenteeism from school won’t do your child any

favours. Allowing your child to skip days simply because they “don’t feel like going to school”

should not be an option.

are able to purchase special treasures for their mum or significant female in their life. Thank you to

our wonderful group of helpers for providing this opportunity to our students.

School Council: Our School Council met again Monday night where key agenda items included:

School Council endorsed Active Holiday’s (Holiday Program) to continue their

partnership with our school to provide a holiday program for up to 4 days per holiday

break.

School Council ‘signed off’ on the Masterplan and Priority Works Plan developed for

Bellbrae PS.

Capital Works Project: As announced by our School Council President, Mitch Barrow, earlier in

the week via Compass, we are delighted that our Masterplan is progressing to the Schematic Design

phase. We are also thrilled that our student toilets and bathrooms will be completely refurbished in

the July holidays. Our School Council is to be commended for their ongoing advocacy in achieving

these outcomes for our students.

EVENTS TO COME……………….

EARN & LEARN Woolworths has just launched Earn & Learn, and we're once again

joining it. For those parents who aren't aware of the program, if you

shop at Woolworths between 1st of May and the 25th of June you

can earn stickers. Our school will be collecting these stickers which

we'll be able to swap for new school equipment; things like art and

craft supplies, sports gear, teaching aids, and more. In the past we

have received great maths, sporting & science equipment from this

program. So for any parents/grandparents/relatives/friends who shop at

Woolworths, please collect those stickers and drop them in to our

collection box which is located in the office foyer. Thanks for

helping out!

WRITING HOT

This week’s writing hot author is Mitchell Garnett from 3B. He writes;

Splash! As the waves crashed down on the seafloor. “Woo hoo!” I cried as I went zooming

through the epic barrel that I had caught. After awhile, I started to get a bit tired. The problem

was that I was super far out to see. I started to paddle back, when I heard this small growl from

under the water. Then I felt something brush against my feet. “It’s a shark!” I scream. I quickly

start paddling as fast as my arms can go. But the shark was just too fast. Just before the shark

put its huge jaw over me, a humongous wave came thundering over the shark and lead me

speeding to the shore. When I got home, mum looked at my board suspiciously. I looked down at

my board and see that the whole back of it had come off! “No!” I said

horrified. Mitchell and his class have been very busy producing writing to

persuade and entertain. In this piece, Mitchell skilfully builds tension as

the complication in his story becomes more desperate. Miss Dunn was

proud of the way he used elements of ‘show don’t tell’ to add to the

excitement of the narrative. Mitchell considered a setting that he was

familiar with and planned a plot that was dramatic and exciting for his

audience. Does this piece grab your attention? Do you feel a sense of

relief that the character is safe at the end of the story? Yes and yes. That

is why this piece is going onto our Bellbrae Writers Wall of Fame

(located just outside the stem room in the walkway). You can read the

story there. Well done guys!
