Remote Learning – Once again we have shifted to a learning from home model. Fortunately,
due to all the hard work we put into the first round, this should be a smooth transition for all
concerned. The most important thing we can stress, is to encourage your child/ren to watch the
explicit teaching videos, which are posted each day. These are as important, if not more important,
than the learning activities that follow. We are aware that some parents will not be able to oversee
all their child’s learning due to their own work commitment, which is why the teachers upload
these explicit instructional videos. We are also aware that students might not all progress at the
same pace whilst learning from home, and this will be taken into account on their return to school.
Please encourage your children to get through as much learning as they are capable of,
considering the unique conditions of each household. Remember that if you miss a day or portion
of learning, the lesson can be accessed again at a later stage. Our Specialist Program (STEM,
Visual Art, Performing Arts and LOTE) has fun and engaging activities that are uploaded weekly,
so please don’t neglect the opportunity to make the most of these learning experiences alongside
the emphasis on Literacy and Numeracy.
Remote learning logistics - A reminder to parents that if you require a device for your child to
please contact the school as soon as possible. (Pick up available now.) Please follow social
distancing procedures and wear a mask when visiting the school.
As we are also required to maintain daily attendance registers, parents are reminded to notify
the school if their child/children will be not participating in a day's learning activities so they
can be marked absent for that day. Below is advice from the Department of Education to assist with Remote Learning from home.
How you can support your child
You can support your child by:
Having a routine and setting expectations
Making sure your child has a space to work in
Providing a level of supervision suitable to your child’s stage of development and
individual needs
Monitoring communications from teachers
Checking in with your child often to help them manage and pace their work
Monitoring how much time your child is spending online
Setting up a learning environment
Every home is different but it’s important to provide a quiet and comfortable space in which to
learn. Where possible, extended learning should take place in a space your family shares. For
example, a lounge room or dining room. These spaces are preferable over a bedroom, where your
child can feel isolated and supervision can be more challenging.
It should be a place:
That can be quiet at times
That has a strong internet signal, if possible

dependent on age
Establishing routines and expectations Start and end each day with a check-in to help your child:
Clarify and understand the instructions they get from their teachers
Help them organise themselves and set priorities for their learning at home
A healthy daily routine is great for mental and physical health, as well as concentration
and learning
Encourage regular exercise breaks. This might mean going for a walk, using exercise
DVDs and apps, dancing, floor exercises or using home exercise equipment
Encourage healthy eating habits and make sure they drink enough water
Communicating with your child
We encourage you to start and finish each day with a simple check-in. These check-ins can be a
regular part of each day.
Parents requesting onsite supervision
There are only three categories of students that are allowed to attend onsite:
Children whose parents cannot work from home, irrespective of the type of work you do
from home, what it might involve, and applies to both parents. (If one parent has to work
away from home and the other parent can work from home, the children cannot be
supervised onsite)
Vulnerable children
Any child with a disability
Any parents who request onsite supervision need to submit a request, which will then be reviewed
for a determination of outcome. The request needs to be submitted on the DET form with the
following conditions:
Evidence from your employer that you cannot work from home and the days of the week
that this applies to. This includes any ‘part’ days
The form needs to be submitted (weekly) by the Thursday of the week prior to supervision
being required
Late requests will not be accepted
If a parent’s work shift ends prior to the end of a school day, the student/s must be
collected immediately
All students onsite will be temperature checked, and if it is above the threshold, they will
have to be collected immediately
Please contact the school if you have any queries or if you require support of any kind.
Enjoy the next chapter of remote learning and try make the most of the challenging times
ahead. It’s an ideal opportunity to bond with your children and to share in their learning
experiences. Remember that kids need to enjoy and be engaged in their learning, so try and
make time to show a genuine interest in the new knowledge they are generating.

WELFARE NEWS
As we return to remote learning, I am aware this will bring about additional stress to some
families through the juggle of balancing work, remote learning and other family
commitments. It is important we role model effective stress management strategies for our
children given the uncertain times we are currently facing.
Evidence has shown that simple mindfulness techniques can reduce the impact of stress and
anxiety, and can be easily incorporated into our daily routines. “Smiling Mind” have a range
of free resources to support children and families in practicing mindfulness and have
suggested 7 simple yet effective tips to manage stress:
Exercise/movement
Deep breathing techniques
Grounding techniques
Healthy sleep routines
Connecting with others (whether that is online or face to face where appropriate)
Contributing to the wellbeing of others e.g. checking in on family members/vulnerable
neighbours (Visit www.smilingmind.com.au for more information and great resources)
Throughout the remote learning period please feel free to get in contact if you would like to
discuss the wellbeing needs of your child or family, via email:

NATIONAL TREE DAY
Last Friday Bellbrae Primary School celebrated National Tree Day. It was wonderful to see
so many classes engaged in activities aimed at encouraging and developing our appreciation
for trees, plant life and the amazing functions they provide for life on earth. Students were
involved in mulching trees and understanding the symbiotic (beneficial) relationships
between trees and fungus. The BEST and CORE students coordinated the planting of 70
indigenous plants in the front area to increase biodiversity in the school grounds. A Tree count
was conducted and 1c found 288 trees onsite! Students measured the Broad beans in the
garden. A special mention to the Grade 6's for their hard work and it was wonderful to see
them leaving a legacy of new plant life. To finish with an eloquent quote by Nelson Henderson
which best articulates the importance of our community embracing such days "The true
meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit."

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID
I am so pleased to be able to host this Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training as part of
my campaign fundraising for the upcoming Surf Coast Shire Council Elections. This
course will teach you practical skills to support someone who is feeling suicidal.
This year has thrown many challenges to our community. At this time we need to support
each other more than ever. Having the skills to be able to identify and support someone
who is feeling suicidal can make a real difference our community.
The sessions will be facilitated by an experienced mental health professional who is also a
local father of two. Social distancing will be adhered to for the sessions and all regulations
around COVID-19 safe practices will be followed.
Note: This is a 4 hour educational course, not a therapy or support group.

Bellbrae Reserve Playground Renewal
The Bellbrae Reserve Playground has been assessed to be nearing the end of its useful life and is due for replacement under Surf Coast Shire Council's
Asset Renewal Program. The program is focused on replacing old playground equipment with new equipment of the same play value.
Before we start the design process we would love to hear from you.
What do you love about the current playground and what could be better?
Please send your responses to
[email protected]. Please provide your response by the closing time of
5pm Friday 7th August 2020.
We will use this feedback to help shape a concept plan for the playground. Once developed it will be shared on the Your Say page on our website, and
you will be invited to provide further input.
