A journey through Thurgarton on VE75 Day…. On the 75th Anniversary of VE Day I had the pleasure of witnessing so many happy people in the village. Let me share the story with you....... As the originally planned day could not go ahead due to the pandemic the PC, during the 23rd April meeting, agreed a ‘last-minute’ working party of Katie Chan, Denise Bryant and me to organise a day of celebrations which of course had to be uber sensitive to the risks of COVID-19, but would hopefully generally lift spirits. We discovered that we had an opera singer in the village – Helen Brackenbury, and when Helen agreed to be a mobile entertainer, we knew that we could build the day around this. We purloined a PA from Charles Day and we were ‘cooking on gas’! I offered to be a travelling ‘singing’ Land girl, taking advantage of my 1 hour of exercise to wander around the village, making 1940’s style noises using a loudhailer, my iPhone and my pub-singer voice. In other words, to play the jester to Helen’s wonderful voice 😉 We decided to ask for recordings from villagers so that we could start communicating with each other; we asked Phil, the Vicar, for a virtual prayer; we engaged with village Web Master, Darryl North, who made all this ‘Virtual stuff’ work; we found and bought bunting and TCA helped dress the village. For extra good fun, we announced the Best Dressed Garden competition and hoped that this would encourage villagers to dress their front gardens and to also embrace fancy dress for the day. At this stage the event started to take on a life of its own - Steve and Margaret Edkins offered to walk the flag around the village, David Yates offered to source and sound a WWII air raid siren and Ellis Morgan kindly agreed to ring the Church Bells. After all that Katie, Denise and I just had to hope that the villagers would all get themselves involved and we were not disappointed……..

I know that there was a fantastic atmosphere throughout the village as I was able to take it all in and enjoy it throughout my journey. I started my trip through Thurgarton at the Bleasby end of Bleasby Rd where there were lots of well-dressed front gardens with the red, white and blue theme. I ‘sang’ ‘Over the Rainbow’ on my way down Bleasby Rd, then ‘sang’ ‘Would you like to Swing on a Star’ down Beck St, again where there were lots of nicely dressed tables and food and drink on display, then into Priory Park where there were lots of neighbours gathered, and socially distanced, around the mini roundabout. I tortured Priory Park with another song and actually received applause or was that just bemusement?!? I then walked to the Park where I ‘sang’ You are my Sunshine to Donald Kennard and ‘We’ll Meet Again’ to Brian Oliver. On my way down the A612 back towards Thurgarton I was surprised to be acknowledged with a wave and shout by a couple of white van drivers. I realised why that had happened when I eventually got to ‘the top of the Hill’, but I digress. I was really delighted to see Linda Morgan and we sang We’ll Meet Again together, but of course at a distance. I then walked to the Stables, encountering Lisa, Fabio and Lucia Milone on the way, and of course shared a song and a bit of impromptu dancing. The Stables had made good use of their Courtyard, all able to socialise together but also safely distanced. I ‘sang’ ‘Que Sera Sera’ in a very un-Doris Day-like way but it went down surprisingly well and a few couples were waltzing to the music.

Finally, I made it to the ‘Top of the Hill’ where a full-blown party was taking place on the grass verges. Lots of colour with red, white and blue garments on clothes lines, and lots of lovely tables with 1940’s memorabilia. A music system blasting out from the back of a truck and lots of people dancing, mostly with each other but one lady with a horse!?! The assault of noise and activity from the party was provoking good-natured acknowledgment from passing motorists, hence the hoots from white van men to me earlier in my journey. Jamie Duquemin-Sheil was playing on a full drum kit to all the music. We all sang my favourite song ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ (yes, I am a life-long Liverpool fan) and of course this song has become so relevant recently through the exploits of Captain Tom and his song with Michael Ball. Finally, I walked back down the hill to Beck St and provided another rendition of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ to the now slightly merrier neighbours, who didn’t seem to mind!! What a great day, it was a proper village event!

A few matters that I didn’t witness, but that I should mention: • thanks to Helen Crowder and Pam Thompson from the WI for judging the Best Dressed Garden

competition. Also, thanks to Jill Bugg for making and providing masks for the judges, and to TAAC for their gloves and hand sanitiser.

• thanks to Georgie and Gonalston Farm Shop for their generosity in providing 2 suitable prizes for the competition as Helen and Pam chose 2 winners for the competition – Yvonne and Peter Mycock and Samuel Freeman

• thanks to Noah Shaw who was asked, at a moment’s notice, to present a gift to Helen Brackenbury, and he did so with grace and social distance

• and most of all - a huge thanks to Helen Brackenbury, who was truly amazing on the day, and the Day would not have been the same without you!!

And finally, Darryl has done such a fabulous job in presenting the recordings associated with the day on the web site, and also produced 5 photo slide shows of the day, they are well worth taking another look at. Thanks Darryl, that must have taken a long time! Tina Tsoukatos……Wandering, ‘singing’ Land Girl

It was absolutely wonderful to see dear Linda Morgan taking part in the VE75 Day celebrations. Welcome home to Thurgarton from all of us! In typical “Linda” fashion, she asked if it was OK to put something in TP this month to say thank you to well-wishers and she has helped me to choose some of the many photos included here. It sounds as if she will soon be seen whizzing around the village….does she know we now have a Speedwatch team in operation??

A huge thank you to Tina and all the PC Councillors who arranged the day….hip hip!

Welcome home…….

Dear friends and neighbours Firstly, may I say a sincere thank you for all your cards, prayers, and good wishes following my accident in August. It made all the difference during my seven months in hospital to know that I would be returning to such lovely friends. I came home just in time for lockdown, so I’m enjoying virtual contact through phone calls, zoom, and the Thurgarton email service. And of course Thurgarton People! I now have a motorised wheelchair in Ferrari racing red, so I can zoom around the garden and further afield. I look forward to seeing you all on my travels. Linda

To Jenny Raw….for being awarded a “Points of Light” award. In a personal letter to Jenny, Theresa May, who was Prime Minister at the time, said:

“By volunteering for the ‘National Women’s Council of Great Britain’ to advocate for gender equality in schools, you are sending an inspiring message to young people across the UK. You should feel very proud of raising awareness of these issues and particularly for discussing gender equality on an international platform while at the United Nations. I wish you every success sharing this experience in your role as an #iwill ambassador.” Following receipt of the award,

Jenny said “I am lucky to work with some very inspirational people and I would like to use this award as a way to encourage more young people to engage in social action to create a world in which it is no disadvantage to be a girll.”

And to Malcolm and Kath Jowett……

who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married in St Marks Church, Bestwood Village on 7 March 1970. They spent their anniversary in Bruges, just before lockdown

June Maureen Stevens 1930-2020

Jo, Tracey and our families would like to say a huge Thank You to everyone in Thurgarton who came to pay their respects as our

Mum made her last journey along Bleasby Road on 4th May. We were really moved to see so many friends and neighbours there to wave her goodbye. We are also very grateful to all who donated the most amazing garden flowers which we laid alongside her. As a keen gardener she would really have appreciated that personal touch.Mum had a fairly turbulent and traumatic wartime childhood, and was unable to follow her dream career of becoming a gardener at Kew Gardens. Instead she went on to train as a lab technician in the pathology labs at Epsom Hospital. She met our Dad, David, at a dance in Ewell and they were married there in 1956. They discovered Thurgarton when our Dad was posted to RAF Syerston and Mum began working for Boots at the Thurgarton Priory site. They were very excited when some building plots came up for sale in Thurgarton, giving them the opportunity to own a property on a large plot of land.; “Upwood”, was our family home. Mum always dreamt of developing her own large garden having inherited her green fingers from her Throughout their married life Mum & Dad travelled to many places but Mum always loved to come home to Thurgarton and her much loved garden. She loved village life. The first thing she did when she moved into the

village was to join the WI. It became a hugely important part of her life and she was an active member until she became unwell earlier this year. She loved being involved in the community and enjoyed many close friendships that came along with being part of a small neighbourhood. Thurgarton provided us all with the security and stability that she hadn’t had in her early life and we have very happy memories of growing up in the village in the ‘60s and ‘70s. Mum had many hobbies and interests. Music was a very important part of her life and she sang for many years with Southwell Choral Society and more recently with Southwell Daytime voices. She loved to hear her Granddaughters sing and play their various instruments and went to many of their performances. She belonged to Shutterbugs photography club and Southwell community Archaeology group. She joined many classes in the village hall over the years such as Yoga, Keep Fit and the Tuesday stretch class, Art, Knit & Natter, Gardening club and of course Rummicub! Above all she had a positive outlook and always tried to be cheerful. June was a loving Mum and a doting Grandmother and will be greatly missed by us all. Claire Bower 1978-2020 Claire was a loving daughter, sister and an amazing caring mother of her beautiful daughter Gracie-Mai. Claire moved to Thurgarton from Gedling in 1996 with her parents Carol and John and brother Jonathan. Her first job at the Red Lion in Thurgarton, where Claire enjoyed working with people, led to a long career in the Hospitality industry. Working in hotels, TV Studios, as a Holiday Rep and finally, up until she fell pregnant with Gracie-Mai, as Cabin Crew with BMI Baby. As soon as Gracie-Mai started nursery, Claire resumed

working part time in various hostelries including the Magna Charta, the Chesterfield Arms, Gedling Inn and then inevitably back to the Red Lion. Eventually she was appointed (or assumed) the position as Bar Manager there. Claire also ran her own business, Café 118 from 2014, before being diagnosed with Breast Cancer in 2015 and after months of treatment and surgery she was declared as being in remission. Unfortunately, Claire succumbed to secondary cancer which developed in 2018. She fought a long battle with further trials and treatments along the way until passing away peacefully in The Haywood House Hospice on the 4th May 2020.

Those of you who came into

contact with

Claire, probably

knew her as a

bubbly and full of character.

In her last few years she arranged numerous fund-raising activities for Breast Cancer research and Child Bereavement Centre in Newark. She arranged a ‘Dance Your Tits Off’ event in Birmingham, with her many raving friends and ensuring that her friends took part in Sky Diving events raising thousands of pounds for her charities. We have only just discovered that during the late 1990’s Claire hosted a party at Greenbank attended by 100’s of guests !! if anyone knew of this we would be pleased to hear from them and would also apologise for any disruption. Fortunately, on our return from holiday there were no signs of the party….everything was spick and span!!

Relief....?

‘a feeling of reassurance following release from anxiety or distress...

practical assistance given to those in special need...’

Dear All, Many people have said to me how grateful they feel. We live in lovely houses, in a beautiful location, within caring communities. We even have such things as zoom to meet friends or worship together. We are by no means unaffected by the virus but there are so many others who are worse affected. I know many also have the needs of others in their minds. Imagine though that there was no NHS free at the point of need, and no more than 2 or 3 ventilators within a 100 miles, and if you or your loved ones became unwell it would cost money you didn’t have to get medical treatment of any kind. Imagine living so closely together there was no real way of isolating or distancing, nor even the facilities to wash your hands regularly. Imagine, the crops you depend on have been ravaged by locusts and food prices have shot up. Imagine how the virus could spread and its likely results... People I know in Bungoma in Western Kenya face exactly this. I must say I am really worried about the devastation C-19 could bring to Africa. ‘Bungoma Calling’ is helping to provide a new food bank distribution to the needy through a local church we have known for many years. This has uncovered another problem faced by many older and sick people. Not just a lack of food but infestation of ‘jiggers’, the chigoe flea, that burrows into the skin of the

affected. Watch the YouTube if you dare! We would like to provide jiggers treatment for 30 households being supplied by the food bank. This involves spraying, washing and treating the wounds properly by medical workers. If I can raised £1000 this will bring relief for the next 12 months for these people. Would you like to help please? You could BACS a contribution to Bungoma Calling (40-40-22 a/c 11735667) or send me a cheque or ask for a gift aid declaration. View the Bungoma Calling Facebook pages for some picture stories of the food distribution. So can gratitude for our own situations turn into relief for others? This is one way a ‘drop in the ocean’ can contribute to the ocean being made up of drops... Thanks The Revd Phil 077 200 100 66 ‘Bungoma Calling’ is a registered charity (no. 1137121) Can I see another’s woe, and not be in sorrow too? Can I see another’s grief, and not seek for kind relief? Hall maintenance update

PRESS RELEASE!!!! Work begins on the Village Hall Energy Saving Project in Thurgarton Building work is under way to improve the energy efficiency of the Village Hall in Thurgarton now that planning permission has been granted for the work. The project, which is being funded by a £49,230 grant from FCC Communities Foundation, will provide a new insulated roof, insulated walls, replacement cladding and windows to the venue in Thurgarton. This will bring long term benefits to the community and the groups and classes that uses it in normal times. The Chair of the Thurgarton Community Association, and Vice Chair of the Parish Council, David Lewis, is excited that the project is starting to take shape given the delays of building works with Corona virus. He says “It is great to see our vision for this vital community facility moving closer to reality. We are extremely grateful for the funding FCC Communities Foundation has given us and we’re looking forward to reopening it to the public once the work is complete and the virus has passed. FCC Communities Foundation is a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, projects from funds donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. Cheryl Raynor, FCC Community Foundations local grant manager says: “We are delighted to be supporting the Community Association to help bring this project to fruition, this is a fantastic facility for local people and we are pleased that work is now underway. FCC Communities Foundation is always happy to consider grant applications for projects that make a difference to local communities and this is a great example of what can be achieved.” For more information about FCC Communities Foundation funding contact Cheryl Raynor at [email protected] or visit http://www.fcccommunitiesfoundation.org.uk David Lewis hopes the facility will be ready for use by August 2020 David Lewis (TCA Chairman / Parish Councillor)

Queries to do with the hall : [email protected] or speak to a Committee Member : David, Helen, Gayner, Jill, Hania, Karen, Barbara and Annie Details of all hall classes or events can be found on thurgarton.org.uk There is an up to date bookings calendar and details of how you book the hall. Please get in touch, take part and use the hall for your private events. It is equipped with chairs, tables, crockery and glasses for 100 people and there is a cheaper, “local” rate for hirers.

TCA are very excited that work has been able to start on the hall and we are looking forward to celebrating with a grand opening if social distancing and lockdown rules allow! The interior of the hall will be decorated throughout and we are looking to raise further funds to replace the toilets. New curtains, fresh upholstery and updated cushions for “cosy corner” will complete the look; if you have sewing skills and would like to help in the near future, please let us know!

Progress photos Here are some progress photos showing the start of the insulation being laid on the roof and the internal strengthening for the lean to roof beams. Seems as if that area of roof has been kept up by sky hooks for a while….. The timber framework of the external walls also needs strengthening in places. New cladding and windows will follow on from the roof work and the fir tree which overhangs the roof and entrance will be taken down as part of the planning permission. TCA May 2020

Parish Council update

Thurgarton Action Against Coronavirus (TAAC) update Shopping – all households that have a TAAC shopping service now have a dedicated shopper and this 121 service has seemingly worked well for all concerned. Prescriptions - generally, one Volunteer collects and delivers prescriptions from the Southwell GP and another for the Lowdham GP, although others do assist on occasion. Post – these tasks are allocated on an ad hoc basis Eggs – continue to be provided by the Kirks at Woodside Farm twice a week, and the village is generally getting through about 600 eggs every week! Gonalston Farm Shop (GFS) – shopping volunteers continue to utilise GFS as they were able to offer payment over the phone from the start and a high degree of service and safety. When GFS changed their service recently to a Call and Collect service this made the job of the Volunteer shoppers so much easier. Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) – recently Volunteers were sourced masks to replace the visors which had originally been provided, as they were uncomfortable and unwieldy to wear. The masks were purchased from Jill Bugg in the village who is making these commercially and selling them on-line. The visors have been cleaned and recycled to Hazelford Residential Home, and these were gratefully received. Funding – all monies spent by TAAC have been sourced through the Parish Council from the Community Grant set up by Newark and Sherwood District Council for COVID-19 support groups

I continue to be humbled by all the lovely gifts and the time given by volunteers to help me, and other locked down people, in this wonderful village. I have sent pictures of Christine's flowers and the Banners to my daughter in New York and to other friends in the UK and told them of how much is being done by taac. None know of any other place which has reached such a high standard on local help and helpers. Donald Kennard

Huge thanks to the Kirk family for kindly supplying the village with soooo many eggs during the last few months. Many people have taken up the offer of both the free “seconds” and have ordered the trays. Pam has shared some photos ……..….

Tina on behalf of TAAC has asked me to share with the village a little more of the background to the recent emails I sent round about supporting the NHS, so here it is…….. My friend Chris Smith tells me that his wife (also Chris Smith) initially had the idea of making masks for NHS workers when she found some old acetates at home. Wondering how to proceed they got in touch with Radio Nottingham and from that made a contact with Learn 2 Print, a training provider for printing and graphics, based in the Newark area. The printers are producing the frames for the visors either by 3D printing or laser cutting, he wasn’t quite sure. Having exhausted supplies from ex teaching and other work colleagues he then contacted other friends locally, including those in U3A. This is the email I then sent round the village, not really expecting a huge response from such a small place. However, Chris contacted me to tell me that after a steady trickle of supplies he then had a contact from a couple in the village, who owned a company that supplied acetates to schools, who donated about 5000 acetates. Because of the huge quantity they arranged to get the supply to the printers directly after making contact with Chris. Chris says he has been a bit overwhelmed with donations but would like to reiterate his thanks to all those who donated, particularly to the couple, Don and Maureen Richardson who made this hugely significant donation. Don said he was pleased that he hadn’t got round to previously disposing of his old stock from his warehouse. People are very resourceful, apparently my friend's daughter who is a seamstress is now making scrubs for the NHS and even under normal circumstances his lovely greyhound Storm cheers up residents of his local care home. Thanks again to Thurgarton for rising to the challenge and particularly to Don and Maureen. Michelle Price-Horne

'We are delighted to offer a new takeaway service from The Red Lion, which started earlier this

month.

Thanks to some new faces we've been able to offer a choice of main courses, starters and desserts on Friday & Saturday, and a traditional roast on a

Sunday too.

The chefs behind the scenes will be Nick (Head Chef) and Nicholas (Junior Soux Chef) from The Staunton Arms, and liaising with you at the collection point will be Andy (General Manager) from the Staunton Arms, and also a

Director at The Red Lion. As we've shared previously, due to the Job Retention Scheme and furlough restrictions, Gemma & Kyme are unable to work at The Red Lion, but they are equally delighted to be able to offer this

service at the pub.

Thanks to everyone who has ordered from us so far, and adhered to the safety measures we have in place at the food collection point. We've had some

great feedback about the restrictions we've put in place for the safety of yourself, the team and other customers.

For any orders, you wish to place, please

email [email protected].

This is an email address created especially for the takeaway service. Please share with your friends, family and colleagues. The support we receive

through our takeaway service will help with the running costs of the pub.

Thanks again to everyone who has shown their support so far, we really appreciate it.

We are all missing our monthly get-togethers in the Village Hall but we are keeping in touch, enjoying our gardens, chatting to neighbours and finding a craft to pass the time. Our youngest members have been helping around the village and we ‘oldies’ who have had to stay at home have been extremely grateful to all the volunteers for their help and kindness. We hope to restart our meetings and monthly lunch outings later in the year. Sadly two of our oldest members have passed away recently : Renee Higgs who lived at Lowdham and previously at Gonalston had been a WI member for 56 years, firstly in Leicestershire and then in Thurgarton from 1975. She enjoyed everything WI had to offer and was a good friend to us all. June Stevens had also been a member here for many years and took on several positions on our Committee. June lived life to the full and had many interests. She took part in our village Entertainment events in the 80’s, was part of a winning County Quiz team, and more recently set up a Rummikub group. But her great love was gardening, so it was a pleasure for us to give flowers from our gardens for her coffin, and to

line the road as the cortege passed as, sadly, we could not go to her funeral. Two lovely friends who we shall all miss. More details about the WI Pam Thompson Tel: 830410

Gardening Club

Thurgarton Gardening Club

If the Lockdown has seen you blitz the garden, doing jobs you ve been putting off for ever and rediscovering the flowerbeds and finally trying to manage the lawn you may have enjoyed some of the satisfaction and pleasure a garden can give. I know it has helped a lot of Thurgarton people stay relatively sane, savouring the calming effects of being outside, seeing and hearing the birds, ‘helping nature to create colourful pots and flowerbeds and growing fruit and vegetables.

The super weather has helped instil some sense of well-being, too, and seeing all the delightful, well- tended gardens in the village has been a treat!

If you have any gardening questions or concerns please let me know and our members will try to get back with answers and advice. And if you would like to join the group for monthly meetings with a variety of interesting speakers get in touch and we ll let you know as soon as we are able to reconvene……

While the world has been struck with a global pandemic our farm, along with many others up and down the whole country have been a hive of activity. With farmers being classified as essential workers and operators being able to self isolate/social distance by being in their own tractor/sprayer cab the tractor wheels have just not stopped turning. The sudden change in the weather to dry and warm was soon resulting in dust clouds as the land was worked ready to drill seed. We now have a good crop of Spring Barley and Spring Beans emerged and growing away. There are a few sticky places where I’d like to see some higher plant populations and better growth across the tougher and stronger clay tops, but I’m glad to see green fields again. We have also drilled Maize, which has germinated but is taking its time to actually break through the strong dry soils. Dare I say, we could really do with a centimetre or two of rain! The soil is still moist deeper down, and the drilling depths were adjusted to account for the drying weather and the need to place the seed in the perfect conditions to enable growth to be optimised – the benefit of modern precision drills. So now we need patience to allow the power of nature to do her thing! Spring is such an interesting time for nature and I know many, many people have been enjoying the Countryside for their permitted daily exercise. Can I please ask

everyone, and encourage you to spread the word as to the importance of sticking to the Public Rights of Way. We have planted and tried to provide a diversified habitat for so many species from English Partridge, and other ground nesting birds to Roe deer that have calved and have their young to hide away while they go off to feed. By sticking to the Public rights of way this allows other parts of the farm to remain quiet and for these creatures to be safe and undisturbed in their own habitat. Thank you. Hope you and your families are able to stay safe and well at this difficult time and hopefully be able to enjoy the beautiful village and countryside we are lucky enough to live in! Thanks from the Big Evensong… In the Jan/Feb edition we advertised the Big Evensong. an update… “It seems a lifetime ago when 80 women met in Southwell Minster to sing together in the ‘Big Evensong’ service. It was in fact February, and the only threat to the event was Storm Dennis - little did we know! This caused some transport problems (including the cancellation of our conductor’s train from London - frantic phone class ensued!) but he eventually arrived and we had a lovely day of singing culminating in Evensong at 6pm. Over 100 people attended the service and along with contributions from the singers we raised over £2500 for the Alzheimer’s Society - a great day day was had by all!” Philipppa Bristow, Organiser “Local Alzheimer’s Society Volunteer, Dementia Friends Champion and Thurgarton Resident, Emma Wood, represented the charity at the event, and expressed her gratitude for the very warm welcome she received” Olly Larkin, Alzheimers Society
