its time to start getting some serious miles in the saddle

exponentially (current estimates are about 12%). Big

manufacturers like Harley-Davidson are taking notice and 3

ago declared May Women Riders Month. Many of the deale

Softails Internationally Famous pork RoastBoneless pork roast, 3 4 poundsDry onion soup mix

All-purpose ourOlive oilHot water (start the water boiling when you get started with the roast)Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Use a dutch oven. Heat olive oil in the dutch oven. Startout with about 1/4 cup. Put about 1/2 a cup of our on a plate. Mix in a package of onionsoup mix. Dredge the roast in the our mixture, pushing it deep into the roast. Save therest of the our mixture.When the oil is hot, brown the roast on all sides. Add more oil as needed. When theroast is browned, take it out of the oil. Add the rest of the our mixture to the oil and stirit with a whisk. You want this to be the consistency of paste. Make sure there are nolumps and let it cook for a minute. Start adding the hot water. It will steam up the rsttime you add water so be careful. Add about half a cup at a time and stir well after eachaddition. Get the gravy to your desired consistency. Taste it and add salt or Worcester-shire sauce if you feel the need. If you dont get as much gravy as you want the rsttime, put more oil in the pot the next time. Add the roast to the dutch oven, cover andheat in the oven for an hour.

Canyon Carving Buffalo Cicken Sliders1 rotisserie chicken, boned and chopped2 stalks celery, nely chopped1/2 cup chopped carrots2 cups crumbled blue cheese

2/3 cup Buffalo wing sauce12 dinner rolls, splitPreheat an oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Mix together the chicken, celery,carrots, blue cheese, and wing sauce in a 9_13 inch baking dish. Bake the Buffalochicken mixture in the preheated oven until heated through, about 20 minutes. Spoonthe hot mixture onto the dinner rolls to serve.

Burn-out Creamy Jalaeno Di16 ounces sour cream1 (1 ounce) packet hidden valley ranch dressing mix2 garlic cloves, nely chopped

_ cup jalapeno pepper, nely chopped1/3 cup cilantro leaf, nely chopped1/3 cup green chiles1 tablespoon lemon juice1/2 cup buttermilk1 tablespoon mayo1. Finely chop the garlic, jalapeno, and cilantro2. Add sour cream, ranch seasoning, lemon juice, buttermilk and stir.3. Add milk 1/4 cup at a time until desired consistency4 Refrigerate until serving (best if made a day ahead).Serve fresh cut veggies or your favorite tortilla chips

Sugar for glazeIn medium bowl, combine our, the 1/4 cup sugar, the baking powder, peel and salt.Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse meal. Combine milk and yolks; mix intoour mixture to form soft dough. Mix in raisins and coconut just to blend. Evenly dividedough into six 4-inch greased tart pans; atten tops. Brush generously with egg white;sprinkle heavily with sugar (about 2 teaspoons on each). Space apart on baking sheet.Bake in preheated 450 F oven about 15 minutes or until springy to the touch and wellbrowned. Cool in pans.

If you have been reading these articles for a while you already knowmotorcycle safety instructor. The most popular course by far is the bso I teach more novices than folks at other levels of skill and experieriders make lots of errors while they are trying to learn how to ride. (Dwrong experienced riders make their share of errors as well.) And itto see what type of error they are making. Sometimes its that they aon the throttle. Sometimes its brake application that is too abrupt. Othturning too wide. Sometimes they miss shifts. Etc., etc.

All trained instructors can see what it was that the student did that dira problem. Thats the easy part. But many times there is an underlyinaction/lack thereof which made the student do that other thing which caused the problem; and that underlying thing is not always so obvio

In my experience, at least nine times out of ten that underlying thing posture the way that the ri der is seated on the bike.

Heres an example: beginning riders typically have trouble blendingand the clutch, and they end up stalling the bike (or worse; use your iMany times those riders release the clutch lever too rapidly and thand then stalls. A less experienced instructor might tell the studenthe clutch more slowly and smoothly. But a more experienced insttell the student to keep their eyes up. While both may be correct, onmore effective than the other. How will keeping the head and eyes up release? And how does this apply to experienced riders who are notcourse?

Utilizing good riding posture when seated on your bike yields certaresults. For one, it gives the rider better balance. For another, it allowcontrol operation (for instance, if the riders arms are fully extended awill be difcult to press on the handgrip in order to make a change owill certainly necessitate movement of the riders entire torso to do soother, undesirable effects). Another benet of good posture is that theview of whats happening far down the road, rather than only whats uthat can yield fewer unpleasant surprises leading to more safety andIts also more comfortable and therefore less fatiguing.

What comprises good riding posture? Head and eyes are up. Bstraight. Arms are slightly bent at the elbow. Right wrist is fairly at, wi

between the elbow and the knuckles where the ngers join the rest Knees should be close to the gas tank. Feet should be in a positiothe foot controls without too much movement. And when riding fast aslide those feet back on the pegs so they will not touch the groundlean angles.

Bikes can be modied to some extent to allow better posture from maybe another bike would t better.

If you are having some problems with control of your bike, or are hdence issues about controlling it, maybe its your riding posture that iTry having a friend take a few photos from varying angles of you wriding the bike, and then review those photos. They may reveal someasily correctible and has a big payoff in safety, comfort and riding encheap and easy, so give it a try.

very interested in the painters, the masters,uys who didnt work from photographs but wholly painted from life, Uhl said from his Golden,studio. There is a special freshness to theirTheyre talking about something and theyretheir craft, a visual dialog, to describe what it ise interested in. Then they express that with the

paints. Thats what interests me.

Uhl said he was also drawn to the nostalgia of earlyHarley-Davidson days, inspired by the vast collectionof archives at Harley-Davidsons corporate ofces.When the average person sees one of his paint-ings, Uhl said, he wants that person to point and sayWhere did you get that antique painting?

I wanted my art to last a long time and be timeless,not some Harley-Davidson trend, Uhl said of hisclassical creations that are nostalgic to a simple timein history. Its just a challenge to actually bring backthe past a little bit and do it in a painter style.

For almost 22 years Uhl and his partner, DanialJames have been working toward the common goal

of timeless art. Based at Uhl Studios in Golden,Colo., Uhl and James have done everything fromillustrations for Time Magazine and Newsweek, topainting T-shirt designs for Hellanbach, to working oncanvas to create limited edition prints for sale, andmore. His audiences love it.

Recently Uhls work was selected to stand next tothe likes of Thomas Kinkade and Gregory Beall, forthe cover of the Indianapolis 500s 100th AnniversaryCommemorative program an honor that perfectlyts his niche in nostalgia. Uhls featured piece, In theBeginning portrays the rst Indi race in 1911.

I love taking black and white photos and trying toturn them into windows of the past, he said.

In addition to his canvass paintings, Uhl, said manybikers proudly display his work on their shirts. In1993 Uhl started painting motorcycle T-shirts for Hel-lanbach, Inc.. He has done more than 600 T-shirt de-signs with his partner, James.

At any given time if you look out into the crowd atSturgis you can see our history, he said.

Thats why, Uhl said he and James recently startedtheir own clothing line. Uhl Works T-shirt companyfeatures hand-crafted art.

Its all about not stealing art off the Internet so muchas actually doing the art by your hands, and not be-ing afraid to put the work into the original art and thenput it on the shirts, which are basically walking can-vasses, he said. People are digging them.

The artist added that all of his products are 100 per-cent American made and he is proud of it.

It costs a little more, but that is part ofemploying Americans is that it costs alittle more, he said. Were very set ontrying to keep the money here in this

country, rather than sending it overseas.

Licensed through Harley-Davidson Motor Company,Uhl Studios ne art is exclusive. Uhls standard re-lease is 150 at a time, with many editions even small-er than that. Every year, for the Sturgis and Daytona

bike rallies, Uhl offers a limited edition, framed piecethroughout the event at a discounted price. After therally, Uhl said he closes the sales, leaving only abouta dozen left to purchase at higher prices, so that bythe time the last piece sells the original rally ordershave tripled in value, usually in about a year.

My goal is to always limit the edition sizes to a small-er number, which will ensure a sell-out and help eachprint gain a strong foothold in the secondary market,Uhl wrote on his Web site.

By doing this, Uhl said his work appeals to collec-tors and those who appreciate his art, while havingthe desire to make an investment. Most importantly,Uhl said, it is im portant to him that his customers feelgood about the art.

The roadblocks are a violation of our rights and are a pure attempt at prol-ing, said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. Having a registration,proof of insurance and an endorsement on our license does make us safe. Loudpipes never killed anyone.

Georgia is the rst state to conduct such checkpoints under a federal grant fromthe National Highway Trafc Safety Administration as part of a $350,000 pool offunds available to as many as ve law enforcement agencies nationwide to testthe effectiveness of a New York State Police pilot program.

Several motorcycle organizations are urging riders to call on Governor NathanDeal to cancel the remainder of the checkpoints, which will be scheduled over thenext 20 months at undisclosed locations during unannounced times.

Some in Congress have also questioned NHTSAs grant and called for Transpor-tation Secretary Ray LaHood to pull the plug on future funding for motorcycle-onlycheckpoints. Rep. Tom Petri (R-WI), who r ecently co-sponsored legislation to pro-

hibit such grants, called the checkpoints outrageously intrusive.Indeed, many of the protesters at the March 23rd rally held signs i n support of USHouse Resolution 904 which would prevent the US DOT from providing funds tostates which would be used for motorcycle roadblocks.

In the meantime, motorcyclists are also awaiting a court ruling on the constitu-tionality of the New York checkpoints, being challenged by N.Y. Aid to InjuredMotorcyclists (A.I.M.) Attorney Mitch Proner on behalf of his clients as well asrepresenting the interests of ABATE of New York and the National Coalition ofMotorcyclists (NCOM).

MOTORCYCLISTS COME TOGEThER FOR JApAN

The 2011 Japan Earthquake and subsequent Tsunami last month has affected themotorcycle industry in a big way, especially since Japan is home to the Big Fourmotorcycle manufacturers: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki.

As the disaster relief efforts continue in Northeastern Japan, American motor-cyclists are doing what they can to help those struggling through the cleanupand rebuilding, with U.S. motorcycle industry groups, racing series and even the

American division of Japanese manufacturers raising funds in various fashions.

Three U.S. powersports industry associations announced that they are joiningforces to provide nancial assistance to the relief efforts underway in Japan. Theboards and members of the Motorcycle Industry Council, the Motorcycle SafetyFoundation and the Specialty Vehicle Institute of America are collectively donating$10,000 to the 2011 Japan Relief Fund, and each organization is encouraging itsmembers and individuals in the riding community to make their own contributionsvia a link on their websites (visit MIC.org, rockmoto.com, motorcycles.org, MSF-USA.org, SVIA.org or atvsafety.org and click on the 2011 Japan Relief Fund tab).

All donations will go to experienced non-governmental disaster relief agencies

in Japan that have a proven track record of emergency humanitarian relief andrestoration work.

To provide support to those affected by Japans worst natural disaster; the mas-sive 9.0-magnitude earthquake that triggered a tsunami that caused widespreaddevastation and crippled nuclear power plants, the presidents of all of the U.S.-based Kawasaki entities are collecting donations from employees under theirmatching gift program and forwarding the contributions to the Red Cross. TheKawasaki Good Times Foundation is contributing $50,000 to initiate the charitablegiving campaign.

Even iconic American motorcycle manufacturer Harley-Davidson has reached outto the disaster zone with a $250,000 donation to the American Red Cross aid ef-fort in Japan, and has established a link on their website to the Red Cross (www.RedCross.org) to make it easier for employees, customers and other riders tocontribute.

EUROpEAN STUDY YIELDS INSIGhT INTO MOTORCYCLE ACCI-DENTS

European researchers discovered some interesting facts about the commoncauses of motorcycle accidents. The Motorcycle Accidents In Depth Study(MAIDS) was based on 921 motorcycle accidents, which included 103 fatalities,across France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. While some of thendings were expected, others were unanticipated. Not surprisingly, the studyindicates that the motorcyclists most often collided with passenger vehicles. Sur-prisingly or not, 70% of passenger vehicle drivers involved in accidents with mo-torcycles failed to perceive the motorcyclist. And while 73.1% of riders attemptedsome form of collision avoidance, 32% nonetheless experienced some form ofloss of control during the maneuver. While all this may seem disheartening toriders, there are steps that can be taken to maximize safety; other ndings fromthe study indicate: Over half of the accidents occurred at intersections - Although90% of those involved in crashes were wearing helmets, 9% of helmeted riderslost their helmets in crashes due to improper t, fastening or damage - Youngerriders -- those between 18 and 25 years of age -- crashed at a higher percentageand riders aged 41 to 55 crashed less frequently - Riders wearing dark clotheswere more likely to crash than others - Modied conventional street motorcycleswere over-represented in crashes in the study, but engine size did not appear tobe a factor - Unlicensed bikers were more likely to crash than properly licensedbikers - Weather was deemed to be a factor in only 7.5% of accidents.

VIRGINIA LAUNChES RIDER ALERT CARD

Richmond Ambulance Authority (RAA) and Bon Secours Virginia Health Sys-tem, in partnership with Motorcycle Virginia, Inc., have launched a new programdesigned to save the lives of injured motorcyclists. The program provides freeidentication data cards that will help rst responders provide rapid and accuratemedical assistance to riders involved in accidents.

Motorcyclists who participate are provided a free Rider Alert card that containstheir personal emergency contact and medical information in the event of a crash.The cards are kept inside the lining of riders helmets and come with a 1-inchround sticker placed outside the helmet to alert emergency responders of thecard. The sticker also warns bystanders not to remove the riders helmet, whichcould prevent further injury.

RAA ofcials say the Rider Alert card program is the rst of its kind in the UnitedStates, and said that they modeled their program on an initiative in Great Britainknown as CRASH Card, developed two years ago by that countrys AmbulanceMotorcycle Club.

On a national level, Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) was foundedpremise over 25 years ago by California attorney Richard M. Lester,Emergency Medical cards to bikers across the country that are linkebase of their important medical information and emergency contactnotied ambulance companies and rst responders across the countthe yellow A.I.M. Card in a downed riders wallet.

We called this event Kristis Dream Ride, not because our daughterKristi who died in an auto accident at the age of 21 in 2003 had alwaysdreamed of riding a motorcycle, rather because she had a dream to helppeople. Determined to keep alive the spirit and compassion of a youngwoman who was a strong champion of the underdog and supporter ofroubled youth, our family created Kristis Fund to provide scholarships

and assistance to area young women.

The young women who have beneted from the Kristi Visocky MemorialFoundation Scholarships are the very types Kristi supported: young, dis-placed girls and single moms, working to pull their life back together andcreate a better life for themselves and their families.

One young woman, a single mom of three little boys, who was embarkingon nursing school, put it this way when told she would receive a $2000scholarship to Front Range Community College, You dont know whathis means to me. Its not just the money for school, its that you believe in

me and believe that I can do this! We have followed and supported thisyoung woman and many like her through ve long years of schooling. InMay this determined young woman will graduate with her nursing degree;we look forward to being in the audience for her pinning ceremony.

We are not bikers, but we do have wonderful friends who are; beautifulpeople who have supported Kristis Fund and wanted to share our mis-sion with their friends. This is the rst Poker Run for Kristis Fund and wehope to see it become an annual event. Carolee Langer is the Chairperson for the Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Ride put onby the Mountain Shadow Riders, a division of Women on Wheels (WOW). Shes beena member of WOW since 2004, and a former Director in 2009-2010.

Shes a Texas gal who got her start r iding at the age of 4 behind her father Ron. Herbike Chuckie started life as a 2005 Victory Kingpin with orange pin striping done bya gentleman named Chuck. Because of the orange pin striping, someone mentionedthat the Kingpin wanted to be a Harley. Although Carolee didnt like the comment,the orange pin striping remained. Two months after the incident, on a dark andgloomy night, Carolee hit one of those bumps created when asphalt and concretecome together on the highway. Chuckie (and Carolee) wobbled down the r oad about40mph, then Carolee went over the handlebars. Luckily, she only suffered a minorscrape but alas poor Chuckie needed some r epair that included new pin striping.No, it wasnt orange!

Chuckie seemed happy with his repairs and new pin striping, but Carolee hadsomething else in mind. Her idea stemmed from a colorful bandana she ownedand loved. She wanted her new paint to match her favorite bandana and after dis-cussing her project with an old high school chum, Brad Ames, owner of BradassDesigns in Allen, TX, she mailed her tins and the bandana. Not excited aboutthe project, Ames only comment was On purpose? About 4 weeks later, thenished parts arrived and Carolee was amazed at what she saw. It seemed as if

Brad had read her mind. It was perfect.

Carolee can now ride her Victory Kingpin with no mistaking about someoneelse might think it should be. She loves Chuckie and rides to work every day.

At least one day of the year, Chuckie gets special attention. One occasion isthe Mountain Shadow Riders Women on Wheels (WOW) Annual BreastCancer Awareness Ride the rst week of Oct in Colorado Springs, CO.

Real men (Chuckie) can wear pink. Ride on!

Bikers are an incredibly patrioticcrowd. I often see the U.S. aggracing the rear of motorcycles as

ride around bringing a lump to myoat at the display of such pride. Forse thinking about adding ags to youre, consider this there is a protocol forplaying this patriotic symbol. While its

not specically addressed in the U.S Code,as it is when dealing with an automobile,you can read between the lines todetermine how the ag should be own onthe back of your ride.

When the United States ag is ownalone on your motorcycle, ag etiquettecalls for it to be either centered on the

bike or mounted to its marching right;its own right as the vehicle is movingforward (which would be the right side ofthe motorcycle to the riders perspectivewhen sitting astride).

If the U.S. ag is displayed on your bikewith another ag of any type, it shouldbe positioned to its marching right;that is, to the riders right sitting on themotorcycle. When the U.S. ag is on yourbike with other non-national ags (POW/MIA, service banners, fraternal ags,etc.), the U.S. ag is placed at the centerand at the highest point of the group.According to the United States Flag Code,NO ag should ever be larger or displayedhigher than the U.S. ag. If the U.S.ag is displayed on your bike with thoseof any other nation, the ags should be

Taking this one step further, there are alsoproper procedures for disposing of U.S.ags when they are old, torn, worn, ordirty. The ag, when it is in such condition

Its barely spring and already the weeks and weekends are lling up with funevents for bikers and motorcyclists. We are fortunate in Colorado to have a greatvariety of places and activities to choose from. The Buzz? Its is all about BikeNights: by the time you are reading this - several area pubs, restaurants, bars,coffee houses and even dealerships will have already started their weekly orbi-monthly bike nights. Although they have been extremely popular for years inwarmer climates and even out east, 4-5 years ago, wed never heard of suchthings around Colorado. Even today, only a handful of establishments have start-ed up viable bike nights.

Some of you may be asking, What is a bike night? I had the opportunity a fewyears back to attend a bike night over in Madison, WI. Boy was I ever impressed!They had it all great food, good bands, fun people, drinks, a few motorcycle-related vendors and many riders with all styles and varieties of motorcycles. Thismade for great people and bike watching. Bike nights generally share the avor ofan old-fashioned street or block party with food and drink specials, entertainment,sometimes vendors or motorcycle competitons of some kind. The parking lots areoften coned off motorcycle trafc only allowed, providing lots of opportunities towander around gawking at the pretty machines or to party and meet new friends.

Last year I had the opportunity to attend a couple of Bike Nights Iin Denver. Manyof the younger generation like hanging out at Sport Bike Night at the Walnut Room

just north of LoDo. Beer and food are served outdoors on the patio and the park-ing lot is blocked for motorcycles only. Participants show off their rides and gen-erally enjoy hanging with other like-minded riders with lots of fun to be had. Theneon on these bikes is really something to see after dark! This year, The WalnutRoom opened their season on Wed April 13 and will be alternating weeks withHooters in Lakewood for the sport bike riders.

Further north, there are several bike nights. In Loveland, Night Shotz, The Wind-jammer Roadhouse at Carter Lake and Crazy Jacks in Ft. Collins host bike nightson Wednesday nights! Bobs Coffee Shop in LaPorte hosts a car and bike nightevery Tuesday with Full Throttle Coffee bike night on Thursdays. At Fatsos, aconverted A & W diner in Loveland you can drop in on Cruise night for Cars onFriday nights attracting muscle cars, hot rods and always a few bikes. Their bikenight is scheduled for Saturdays this year .

The real BUZZ around Denver and beyond is about Quaker Steak n Lube, thenewest venue to open up this year. Quaker State and Lube, was the name of onethose old gas stations companies in the early 1900s: the theme is kept alive withantique cars and motorcycle stuff, also memorabilia from Nascar and motorcycleracing decorating every wall and even hanging from the ceiling. Although new toour area, Quaker Steak and Lube has been very popular east of the Mississippifor many years now.

Al Schulz, marketing manager for the local Quaker Steak & Lube tells me, Ourbike nights are just a night where the motorcycle enthusiast can come out andhang out with other people who have the same likes and interest. He continued,We are not your typical Biker Bar, we are more like a fun family oriented restau-rant; all types of bikers & motor-sport fans can come here to have a great mealand relax, while checking out the motorcycles or cars and watch the race or gameon one of the 34 HD TVs.

Their popular bike nights kicked off on Wed April 20 this year with the Paul GloverGroup, who played classic rock from 7 10 pm. Quaker Steak and Lube bikenights will be held every Wed through Sept.

Bike nights (sometimes also spelled bike nites) arejust a great place to meet new friends who ride, orhang out with your regular buddies. These establish-ments really support our passion/ lifestyles and giveus a place to ride to and relax mid-week with otherfun folks who like to ride. Forget the boob tube. Getoff the couch!

A custom, patriotic-themed trike is looking for a new owner! The trike, a 2011

Lehman CrossBow powered by the Victory Vision, was revealed to enthusiastic

crowds of bikers on March 11th during Daytona Bike Week. First revealed at the

Victory Riders Association Lunch and then later at the Broken Spoke Saloon dur-

ing American Iron Bagger Bike Show and Launch Party, the trike is part of Lehm-

ans annual Good Turn Trike program that converts one winners motorcycle into

a trike. This year, Victory Motorcycles generously donated the 2011 Victory Vision

for the conversion, making this the rst-ever complete trike to be given away as

part of the program. The Good Turn Trike is open to military members only this

year and will be presented to the lucky winner during the 71st Sturgis Motorcycle

Rally at the Legendary Buffalo Chips Freedom Celebration on August 11, 2011.

The special edition trike, valued at nearly $40,000, features a one-of-a-kind patri-

otic paint scheme as well as many upgrades. Active and Veteran members of all branches of the Department of Defense,

part number abc-123. Thats helpful, but sometimes part number abc-123 is

$3 to make. Thats when the gears in your noggin start turning.

Its impossible to visit Dan Ballards

Colorado without talking motorcy-cles, and on a recent visit, Joe Far-

row (Thunder Roads) and Dan hit

on the subject of tools. Ballard had a

host of small tools hed made himself

uring the discussion stated, It would be cool if you guys did some articles

t home made tools. Weve included pictures of three of Ballards tools here.

The contorted box end wrench was heated and hammered to an angle so you

can remove or tighten the upper motor mount on older model Harley-Davidsons

without removing the gas tank.

The piece of wire is used to test rear belt deection. The top stepped edge of the

wire pushes up on the rear belt. The wire will start to bend when it reaches 10

pounds of pressure, which is where you should measure the distance of move-

ment on the belt. Check your service manual for the deection required for your

model.

What looks like a piece of scrap metal is a 7/8th wide and 1/8th thick piece of

steel that reaches in and the notch captures the star nut under the triple tree so

you can adjust the steering head bearings. This one is being used on a Harley-

Davidson Road Glide, but something identical or similar can be used for other

makes and models.

Clothespins are a handy device

when adjusting pushrods. After pop-

ping off the top part of the pushrod

cover, lift the bottom of the cover up

and hold it in place by clipping theclothespin onto the pushrod. This

works for any bike that has adjust-

able pushrods.

Another easy-to-manufacture tool is

a large washer designed to keep the

pressure plate, springs and spring

plate in one piece when youre d-

dling with your clutch pack. You re-

move the pushrod adjusting screw

locknut, slide the washer (which is

large enough to cover the edges of

the spring plate) over the pushrod,

and then reinstall the locknut. Now you can remove the nuts from the cl utch hub

studs and get to work.

Some homemade tools are a lot
