A diverse Abbotsford Airshow
Prepare your eyes and ears for amazement as the 49th annual Abbotsford International Airshow lands at the Abbotsford Airport this weekend.
As always, the entertainment will thrill fami-lies and aviation enthusiasts alike.
A number of well-known planes will be returning to the skies, as will popular static displays and demon-strations.
Special this year, the Canadian Forces SkyHawks will be celebrating its 40th anniversary, and the Supermarine Spitfire will be celebrating its 75th anniversary.
In the air
As the show gears up for its 49th year, the air perfor-mances will follow the same routine as in the past, fea-turing military planes, warbirds and civilian aircrafts.
Canada’s military aerobatic team, the Snowbirds, will be returning to Abbotsford skies for performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The team consists of nine Canadian designed and built CT-114 Tutors.
A CF-18 Hornet TAC demo will be flown by 409 Squadron for the first time this year. 409 Squadron has a rich history at the Abbotsford Airshow having performed for many years in the ’70s and ’80s in their CF-101 Voodoos.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II will be taking over the skies this year at the show as well. It is the first Air Force air-craft specially designed for close air support of ground forces.
Celebrating its 40th anniversary, the Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks will be demonstrating a signature canopy relative work parachute perfor-mance.
Meantime, the C-17 Globemaster, which is one of the latest planes in the Canadian Air Forces inventory, will also be flying.
The warbirds taking to the sky will include the T-6 Texan which is painted in the colours of the RCAF Golden Hawks, and Discovery Air Hawk One, which is an F-86 Sabre also painted in the colours of the famed Golden Hawks aerobatic team.
In addition, the Supermarine Spitfire will return to Abbotsford after a long absence from the airshow, cel-ebrating its 75th anniversary.
The civilian aircrafts at this year’s show will include the T-34 Mentor flown by Julie Clark, the MX2 Aerobatic Aircraft flown by Rob Holland, and a comedy act in an 1942 Interstate Cadet flown by Kent Pietsch.
Another civilian act will be the Indy Boys. An Abbotsford first, they will present a jet-powered school bus that can run up to 580 km/h.
On the ground
The static displays on the ground will showcase air-crafts in four categories: heavies, fighters, trainers andhelicopters.
In addition, the 39th Canadian Brigade Group willprovide a ground demonstration to display the capabili-ties of personnel and equipment.
The Canadian Forces Tactical Assault Demonstrationis another highlight.

The Spit re is one of the most recognizable aircraft from the Second WorldWar. This British-built, single-seat ghter plane was a common sight in the Royal Air Force and other Allied countries during the war years.
It was originally put together as a short-range, high-performance interceptor, and its main role was to shoot down incoming German bombers. However, the aircraft was highly adaptable, and with wing variations, the Spit re was able to be tasked as a trainer, carrier-based ghter, for photo reconaissance or as a ghter-bomber.
The original Merlin engine, fabricated by Rolls-Royce, put out 1,030 HP, and in later iterations, carried theGriffon powerplant, capable of generating 2,035 H2,035 HP.
The Spit re featured at the upcoming Aming Abbotsfords o s c ad C ec osAirshow is clad in Czechoslovako a a a gs,lovakian markings,
and saw air combat in tht in the late 1940s. It was own by Flight Light Lieut. Karel Posta, a highly decoratedorated ghter pilot, who earned the CzCzechoslovakian War Cross ve times,Medal of Valor three times, along with the French Croix de Guerre, and several otherawards.

Celebrate the SkyHawks’ 40th
The SkyHawks will be celebrating its 40th anniversaryat this year’s Abbotsford Airshow.
Kevin Plastow Abbotsford News
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Canadian Forces Parachute Team, the SkyHawks.
Over the years, the group has proudly represented Canada, showcasing the professionalism, dedication and teamwork it takes to be a part of the Canadian Forces.
Across North America, the SkyHawks will be performing at over 30 shows in 2011, showcasing their thrilling and exciting act of parachute Canopy Relative Work.
Since its inception, the group has had many changes. The most notable change took place in 1977 when the team traded the
Para-Commander round parachute for the more manoeuvrable Ram-Air square parachute. This advance in team equipment allowed for more dy-namic and crowd-pleasing performances. Canopy formations has been a major portion of demonstrations since the 1989 season.
But one part of the team that hasn’t changed is the signature of the SkyHawks: the Canadian Flag parachute.
The team has also achieved a number of successes, including the world’s most northerly demonstration jump at Canadian Forces Station Alert on the northern tip of Ellesmere Island on Sept. 19, 1982.
At the Abbotsford Airshow, fans can expect a colourful and exciting performance. For more information, visit www.skyhawks.forces.gc.ca.
