We’ve been trying to fit as much last minute summer fun into our days as possible. The weather has been a little shaky, but in between rain showers we’ve managed to make several horse shows for some weekend warrior barrel racing. How about you? Have you made the most of the warm
days this year? If the early forecasts are right, we’d better fit it in now. It sounds like they think we are in a for another bad winter....yuck.
On a lighter note, this month’s issue has lots of good stuff packed inside. We have (as mentioned last month) the Belmont coverage. Even though we all know the outcome of the Triple Crown possibility, it’s such a great story and the pictures from Steve Heuertz are beautiful...it makes you feel like you were almost there in person.
We had a rough week here at the farm. Bella shares a little this month about Duke and his injury in her story. We aren’t out of the woods with him yet, we are praying he heals up alright and can keep Chuck, the rooster, company outside very soon. I’m sure he’d appreciate if you added him to your prayers.
Until next month.....soak up the last of those summer rays, dig out the hoodies for fall......and remember to count your blessings on horseback!

Do you East coast guys use a back cinch?rodeomom3I have been looking at used saddles trying to find another Caldwell and no-ticed that all of the saddles from the east don’t have back cinches. I asked about it and was told that we gals here in the western states use them more and you don’t see that many of them in the east. Just curious, I leave my back cinch loose so it is really not serving much of a purpose, I am just used to seeing saddles with them.
trickster j (Texas or Arizona)Not positive, but back east they don’t rope as much as they do out west- a back cinch is crucial for roping and dal-lying from the horn so the saddle won’t lift up in the back. That’s my guess- but who knows. I used to live in Maine and Massachusetts before I moved to Wyo-ming and I noticed the same thing with the back cinches.
Just Plain Lucky (Ohio)I think that it might be true. Nobody had one when I was still showing. I bought one for my saddle and I was in the mi-nority. I do think that they’re catching on though. polorunner (Kentucky)Yes, I have a back cinch on every saddle I own. Acutally just bought a used sad-dle from a girl in TX and it came with-out one, so I had to go buy one.
Murphy (Kentucky)I’m in Ky and I run with one. I see pipe using them, just improperly. They just hang there.

ChasingCans04I’m an east coaster and I use one. I agree about the roping aspect but a lot of peo-ple trail ride and barrel race w/ them too. There are also a ton more western riders out west I believe so maybe you just notice more out east.

TessBelle (Alabama)2 of my saddles have them but my other 2 don’t. I would rather have them so the back of my saddle doesn’t pop up but my gelding is tickleish and will buck like crazy with one. My other doesnt have just because I don’t have one for it and I almost never ride it and I don’t run in it so I’m too cheap to buy one.
SuckerForHorses (Vermont)Not a lot of people in Vermont use them. That being said - OP, if you have one on your saddle and it’s not doing any-thing because it’s just hanging there too loose, either take if off, or use it prop-
erly. Ever seen a horse kick at a fly and slip a rear hoof through a loose fitting rear cinch? It isn’t pretty. Use it snug/correctly or don’t use one at all.
koi322 (Georgia)I run in a treeless on a few horses and I couldn’t imagine it not having a rear cinch.
BleuIdGrl (Florida)From fl and I use one! Partially because I like how it looks but also I like to have it snug enough to just be touching the horse that way the back of the saddle doesn’t flip up and put too much pres-sure on his shoulders in a turn if I get too far forward. They’re hit and miss. Some love them, others fear them. I’ve seen a few horses get their back leg caught in them, but they were both freak accidents
Crowned Image (Maryland)Moved from Iowa to Maryland. I have noticed being over here there are a con-siderable amount (what I would consider “considerable amount” is 1 out of 5 peo-ple) of barrel racers that don’t use a back cinch or sometimes even breast collars. Back in Iowa, it was like you were driv-ing a car with 3 tires if you didn’t have a back cinch on... even if you didn’t rope. I still use one, but I know I don’t put it on tight enough, and just think my horse looks weird without it.
dashnlottiI bought one for my treeless. I have al-ways used one and felt naked without LOL. It was a challenge finding one narrow enough to fit. I also initially had issues with my saddle slipping so the back cinch makes me feel more secure, although a Saddleright pad and new cinch fixed the slipping issue.
brlraceaddictA snug flank cinch also helps to keep saddles from rolling on those mutton withered or round backed horses. :)
oija (Texas)I use them. Most people I know also do. Course a lot of people I know also rope, lol.
Jinx (Kansas)I don’t think it’s necessarily a regional thing. Lots of people here don’t use them (Kansas). I use one every saddle and snug. Having a loose back cinch is as silly as having a loose front cinch.
fulltiltfilly (New Jersey)I used a back cinch on my grey mare when she really started running hard. Other then that, no, I do not use one.
Farrierlady (Alabama)I grew up in CT, lots of rodeo’s, lots of ropers and yes a back cinch on our saddles.
CocoChexI have run with and without one, and I definitely prefer having a back cinch on my treeless saddle. The back doesn’t pop up with one. I use a snug back cinch, it doesn’t do anything if it’s loose.

Sometimes we make a mistake that needs to be “Set Straight.” (We’ve all been there, right?) Well, we want to be sure to give credit where credit is due.
Last month’s ad for Smoke N Sparks included a congratulations to Angie Cunningham and her horse, “Joker.” We had his registered name listed incorrectly, it should be “TDL Smoke N Ice.”
TDL Smoke N Ice is by Smoke N Sparks and out of the Thoroughbred mare, Ice on Wallstreet (by Sold To Wallstreet TB.) He is a foal of 2009 and was bred by Dennis and Terry Langford.

Cant Catcha Corona wins Gordon Mobley

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 26, 2014 – Cant Catcha Corona and jockey Harold Collins rallied home to win the richest Quarter Horse race ever held in the state of Indiana Saturday, July 26. The duo earned the title in the fifth running of the $199,200 Gordon Mobley Futurity Final by only the margin of a head at the finish of the 300-yard dash.
Two horses were scratched late in the gate, causing a delay to the start. All horses were backed out and regrouped before the final six took their places. The delay didn’t upset Cant Catcha Corona, who had a perfect start for Collins.
“He (Cant Catcha Corona) didn’t get upset or rank at all when we backed out of the gate,” said Collins. “And, he went right back in the gate and stood perfectly for the start. He broke excellent and I knew right as we hit the wire he had won it.”
Cant Catcha Corona, starting from post two, had a slight lead the entire length of the race, fending off a late rush by Stone Toasted and Juan Guer-rero at the finish for the win in a time of :18.542 seconds. Eye Pay U Off and Aron Hunt rallied home for third.
It was a big victory for trainer Randy Smith, who also saddled Stone Toast-ed for the race along with Jess A Devil, the fourth place finisher. After a win in the trials, Guerrero, who had won on both Cant Catcha Corona and Stone Toasted, chose to ride the latter, leaving the mount open on Cant Catcha Corona.
“I didn’t have anything that qualified for the final,” said Collins. “I thank God for Randy Smith and for letting me ride this horse. He (Cant Catcha Corona) gave me everything he had for the win.”
The win aboard Cant Catcha Corona marks the third year in a row that Collins has won the Gordon Mobley Futurity. He guided Doc Special to victory in 2013 and Ball Ball Corona in 2012. Doc Special and Collins set the stakes record of :16.130 seconds last year.
Also owned by Smith, Cant Catcha Corona is now three for three in his brief career. The First Corona Home gelding was bred and raised by Diana Moster of Seymour, Ind. He now possesses more than $122,000 in earn-ings.
“We have been breeding and raising Quarter Horses for years and have been racing in Indiana since 2004,” said Moster, whose operation runs under the Running Colors Quarter Horse Farm. “We started off with one mare and now breed about 10-15 a year, so we sell quite a few of them now. It’s fun to come and watch them race, even if we don’t own them anymore.”
Moster joined the connections of Cant Catcha Corona in the winner’s circle along with the race’s namesake, Gordon Mobley, who was in at-tendance. Mobley is a longtime supporter of Quarter Horse racing in the Hoosier State and was selected as the namesake for the stakes by the Quar-ter Horse Racing Association of Indiana.
The Mobley Futurity Final was one of nine races on the program that boasted the largest evening for purses in the 18-year history of pari-mutuel Quarter Horse racing in the state of Indiana. Purses exceeded the $669,000 mark for the evening, which included five stakes races.
Stinkin Rich takes Jaguar Rocket Futurity

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 26, 2014 – Stinkin Rich made his name a little more valid Saturday, July 26 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino, tak-ing home the top prize in the 12th running of the $130,500 Jaguar Rocket Futurity Final. Ridden to victory by Aron Hunt, Stinkin Rich drew away for the win in a time of :15.524 seconds, establishing a new stakes record in the process.
Starting from post two in the 10-horse final, Stinkin Rich was a contender from the start of the 300-yard dash. Hunt had the two-year-old grey son of One Famous Eagle focused the entire way, rolling to a one-length win at the wire. Diamond Kissed Too and Ben Creed finished second, giving Trainer Ron Raper the top two places in the race. Rock Crushin Dynasty and Juan Guerrero finished close for third.
“Ron (Raper) told me to warm him (Stinkin Rich) up normal,” said Hunt, who is a top three rider at Indiana Grand. “I knew I could win the race, I just needed to get a good break out of the gate. When the gate opened, he was quick making the lead. Then, I knew it was all on me. I just rode him with confidence and he ran his heart out for me.”
Stinkin Rich is owned by Carolyn Bruce, who is also the breeder. After finishing second in the Jaguar Rocket trial by only a neck, he is now two for three in his young career. His earnings now exceed $81,000.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 26, 2014 – After finishing third in the trials, little attention was given to Pistolpacking Pepsi in the 12th running of the $135,100 Blue River Derby Final. The three-year-old sorrel gelding was winless in 2014. However, past performance lines showed he shouldn’t be overlooked. Pistolpacking Pepsi completed his two-year-old season with a win in the $137,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity and he returned to that form Saturday, July 26 to win the lion’s share of the hefty purse.
Starting from post three in the 10-horse lineup, Pistolpacking Pepsi took a few steps to get into gear. Once jockey Gabriel Lagunes had the son of Jesse James Jr. reaching his full stride, he was hard to fend off by his op-ponents. Pistolpacking Pepsi dug in and fought hard for the win, getting the job done by only one-half length over Bye Bye Eagle and Shanley Jackson, the horse that had defeated him in the trial. Pistolpacking Pepsi granted his backers a hefty return on their investment, paying $15.40, $6.20 and $3.40 across the board. He turned in a time of :20.100 seconds for the dash. The gelding is trained by Ron Brown, who co-owns him with Robert Ray. The win increased the sophomore sprinter’s earnings to more than $172,000. The race also marked the first time La-gunes had ridden him.
“I was a little concerned because we didn’t have our regular jockey (Rod-ney Prescott) tonight,” said Brown. “But it all worked out and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. I’m tickled to death. I could do a back flip right now.”
Brown, who also conditions a string of Thoroughbreds at Indiana Grand, had one other horse on the card. Tinys First Pepsi, who is also owned by Brown and Ray and ridden by Lagunes, just missed qualifying for the Bob Woodard Memorial Classic Final, turning in the 11th fastest time of the group.
However, Brown has several more chances for both horses during the 2014 racing season in Indiana. When asked what the plan was for Pistolpack-ing Pepsi, he quickly responded that the horse would be headed to the $50,000-added Stallion Service Auction Derby set for Saturday, Sept. 13. The day will include three stakes races and will no doubt lure Lagunes, who is based at Belterra Park in Ohio, back to Indiana for the program.
The win aboard Pistolpacking Pepsi was one of four on the card for La-gunes. He had a pair of wins for trainer Julio Almanza with Skye Fire in race three followed by a win with Hooked on a Beach in race four. Lagunes returned for a win in the evening’s nightcap, winning the $72,640 Indiana Grand QHRAI Derby Final with Secret Miracle, also trained by Almanza. Secret Miracle picked up her second win in three starts for 2014. It was also her fourth career win in 10 starts for the three-year-old daughter of No Secrets Here. She is owned by Guadalupe Arevalo and recently joined the Almanza barn for her three-year-old campaign.
WRs Quick Regards quickest in Heartland Futurity

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – July 26, 2014 – After winning his trial in con-vincing fashion, WRs Quick Regards and Juan Guerrero returned to their winning ways to win the sixth running of the $92,800 Heartland Futurity.
Starting from post seven in the nine-horse lineup, WRs Quick Regards took control of the race early on, sprinting to the win over the fast track in a time of :15.633 seconds, the second fastest time in the six-year history of the stakes race. First Down Renata finished second a head in front of WRs Secret Dream and Shanley Jackson.
Both WRs Quick Regards and WRs Secret Dream are trained by Randy Smith, who had a very productive day. In addition to the win by WRs Quick Regards, Cant Catcha Corona was victorious in the $199,200 Gor-don Mobley Futurity along with the second place finisher in the race. In all, Smith had 14 starters on the nine race program with two wins, one second and two thirds in stakes action.
WRs Quick Regards is owned by Gwen Williams’ Williams Racing Sta-bles, Inc. of Iowa. The Chicks Regard two-year-old is now two for three in his brief career with more than $53,000 in earnings.

Great Turn Out at 2014 Ba$h 4 Ca$hThe 1st Annual Ba$h 4 Ca$h, has come and gone. This year’s event was held at Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburg, Indiana over the weekend of July 11-13. “It could not have been such a good show without all the support of colunteers and sponsors,” said Amber Bryant.
Overall the show ran very smooth and it was a fun filled weekend. There were several exciting classes on Saturday, including a Ball Race, Rescue Race, Dash 4 Cash, and a Flag Race.
The Pee Wee class was very exciting both days. There were a whopping 23 riders Saturday. Prizes included two buckles and numerous awards to each Pee Wee rider. Kaitlyn Ray won the 1st Place Champion Pee Wee buckle and Steven Webb grasped the 2nd place Reserve Champion Pee Wee Buckle.
Friday night IBRA Open Barrels, Clint Van topped the leader board with a 14.814 out of 210 entries. Saturday IBRA Open Barrels had 284 entries and was won by Nathan Peoples, with a 14.688, Sunday Chris Coffey was out front with a 14.679.
Youth was dominated both days by Lane Hornberger. and Chris Coffey won the Masters on Saturday and Darrin Hornberger rounded out the Mas-ters Sunday.

Application Period for T.I.P. 2015 Now Open
The application period for 2015 horse shows to apply for Thoroughbred Incentive Program (T.I.P.) awards is
now open. T.I.P. offers high point awards and classes for Thoroughbreds in multiple disciplines, including dressage, eventing, hunt-er, jumper, pleasure and Western. The T.I.P. application period for 2015 shows is August 1, 2014, through September 30, 2014. Shows should ap-ply even if the information is tentative. Early applications are appreciated. In 2014, T.I.P. will offer awards for registered Thoroughbreds at over 500 shows in 38 states and Canadian provinces.
Created and announced in October 2011, T.I.P. recognizes and rewards the versatility of the Thoroughbred through sponsorship of Thoroughbred classes and high point awards at sanctioned horse shows, performance awards, and non-competition awards. Veterinary Mobility Act Signed Into Law
On Friday, August 1, President Obama signed into law an American Horse Council (AHC) supported bill, the Veterinary Medicine Mobility Act, making it legal for veterinarians to provide the care necessary
to horses away from their licensed place of practice and across state lines.
Previously, the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) believed that veterinar-ians were in violation of the Controlled Substance Act (CSA) and prohib-ited them from transporting, administering or dispensing any controlled substances which are necessary for the veterinarian when attempting to care for the safety and well-being of the horse beyond their licensed loca-tions.
The new language reads, “a registrant who is a veterinarian shall not be required to have a separate registration in order to transport and dis-pense controlled substances in the usual course of veterinary practice at a site other than the registrant’s registered principal place of business or professional practice, so long as the site of transporting and dispensing is located in a State where the veterinarian is licensed to practice vet-erinary medicine and is not a principal place of business or professional practice.”
The AHC is unaware of how the DEA will react to this or whether they will issue new guidance or change their registration process in any way to reflect this new provision.
The AHC would like to thank Congress and the President for this impor-tant legislation that allows veterinarians to continue caring for the well-being of horses without any fear of being in violation of the CSA.

IPRA Announces Central Region Tour Finale

nale will be held October 31 – November 2 at Gordyville USA in Gifford, Ill. All IPRA members are eligible to qualify by earning points at Central Re-gion rodeos and the top ten in each event will advance to the Tour Finale. The Central Region does not have to be a contestant’s designated region in order to be eligible to qualify. Tour Finale standings are available on the IPRA’s website at www.ipra-rodeo.com. “We are planning to have an even set of quality livestock so anyone can win first and the event will be geared toward making the cowboys the stars. The Hannagan’s at Gordyville know how to put on a great rodeo and the facility is cowboy friendly,” stated Mike Latting, owner of Latting Rodeo Productions. Livestock will be provided by Latting Rodeo Productions, Wooten Rodeo Company, and Rafter H Rodeo Company. Competing at the Central Region Tour Finale will not affect contestants’ eligibility for the National All Region Finals (NARF). Contestants will qualify for the NARF based on the traditional region standings. This year the NARF will feature the top two contestants in each event from each of the five regions.

Oh Wow!!That’s all that can be said for the second annual Barrels and Bling!! Once again, the barrel racing community has shown the love and compassion to support a family and a foundation! Thank you all who volunteered, who shopped, who came out, and those who ran!! A huge thank you to our sponsors who might not even know what barrel racing is about! Without all of you, we couldn’t achieve all that we did!!
This year the show was held at the Hoosier Horse Park in Edinburg, Indiana. Friday night’s warm ups was accompanied by a dinner supplied by Holt’s Café.
The show started with a wonderful grand entry of something new. Cali and Cami Moriarity who normally barrel race, decided to try their hand at trick riding.
Although they have been barrel racing and riding their whole lives, trick riding requires special moves. Cali, 16 years old, and Cami, 10 years old, have been practicing their routine since April. They even went to a clinic in Illinois to get some pointers. They practiced all summer twice a day to perfect their tricks like the Hipppodrome, Indian Hideaway,
and the Saddle Layover. All while teaching their mount what to expect. So this is not something one can just decide to try one day. You must have special training and the right equipment. Also, you need a horse that is willing to withstand the different positions. The Moriarity girls used Cami’s barrel horse, 18 year old Beetlejuice.
The benediction was a wonderful recount of how our lives are much like a barrel race. Jon Hemmer eloquently spoke while Riana Gilliland rode her horse, Cassie, in the barrel pattern.
This year the Most Bling award went to seven fabulous girls known as Team Bling!! And boy did they bring it on!! Those cute little girls and their captain, Amy Johnson, won with a donation of over $1,200. We can’t thank the families enough of these girls, Carlie Corbin, Addy Ketron, Annelle Jimenez, Brilee McMahan, Abi Herndon, Bailee Tieman, and Hallie Hagan!

Chalee Gilliland was an 11 year old barrel racer that had Cystic Fibrosis, a life threatening genetic disease that causes severe damage to the lungs and digestive system. Chalee passed away suddenly and without warning on September 22, 2012. Her parents, Robert and Susan, created a foundation to honor its 11-year-old namesake’s endless spirit by inspiring and empowering those with the greatest needs. The Chalee Gilliland Foundation, Inc. is specifically driven to provide financial and emotional support to those with Cystic Fibrosis, the barrel racing community, and animal organizations
This years’ recipient is very special to the Gilliland family. She was the very first person the family met, face to face, that has Cystic Fibrosis. And she barrels races, no less! The family was very proud to be able to do something for this special person!

Winning requires a lot of things to go right. Losing requires only one thing to go wrong. As the level of competition rises, more and more things have to go right. The time
to start getting your horse ready to show actually starts back in the breeding shed as you choose your genetics. Whether you bred or bought your horse, we will assume that you have done your homework in the genetics and nutrition department and you have a horse that has good conformation and is sound at this point.
If you have a younger or older horse, the first thing to concentrate on besides the actual training aspect is to make sure your horse is in good enough shape to do what you are asking of him. You must remember that a horse less than 24 to 26 months still does not have some of its growth plates closed yet. These young horses take a very minimum of ninety days to get their muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons strong enough to take the wear and tear of training. Just as any athlete they need a strong base level of fitness before you ask them to go to a higher level of training. Repetitive movements such as going round and round in a training pen at the same speed and gait for long periods of time is very strenuous on young joints and ligaments. Muscles of horses in training are no different than people who are training. The muscles take strain to make them stronger but they also need rest so they can repair themselves as they prepare for more strain and more strength. If the muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints do not get some down time for repair, you will end up with a sore horse or a horse that breaks down before he makes it to the show pen. You will never see a winning professional human athlete in a training program that causes him to use the same body parts and motions day after day without at least 48 hours of down time for that body part or motion. The training causes breakdown of the muscles, etc and the down time allows them to repair and come back 48 hours later even stronger.
You can take your horse on a trail ride and still get in some training. Your horse’s mind will get a rest from the training pen and his joints will get a break from the repetitive motions from the training pen. You will end up with a sounder and happier horse in the long run. A horse that is not sour from endless hours in the training pen is more apt to learn quickly when he is in the training pen.
An mportant aspect of having and keeping that winning edge is to make sure your horse’s feet are balanced with the proper break over point and a non broken pastern hook axis .Long toes and under run heels are common but they are a deterrent to optimum performance. The feet should also be balanced in the medial to lateral (side to side)
aspect also. A well balanced foot is just like a well balanced tire. An unbalanced foot will cause more wear on one side of the coffin joint than the other. A well balanced foot will also cause your horse to travel smoother and more like an athlete. You can check your horse’s foot balance with two x-rays of each foot.
Another area that needs to be in balance but is often overlooked is the mouth. The teeth need to be floated and the mouth balanced

at least every year. Horses less than five years old lose and add from 40 to 44 teeth between their yearling and five year old year. The losing and gaining of these can cause a severe imbalance of even a young horse’s mouth. The imbalance can cause pain in the temporomandibular joint. This TMJ pain can cause your horse to be irritable and to resist training. A properly floated and balanced mouth with the wolf teeth pulled can go a long way towards having a horse with the winning edge. There are many “equine dentists” out there. Make sure you use someone who is licensed and trained in the science of equine dentistry. The best dentistry tools are pneumatic floats. They have the power to do a perfect job but they do not create heat in the mouth and they do not hurt soft tissue. You can turn a pneumatic float on full force and put it in your hand and you will not hurt your hand but it will float teeth perfectly.
Horses that are under stress from showing and training may benefit from Ulcergard by Merial as a preventative for stomach ulcers or Gastrogard as a treatment for ulcers. Stomach ulcers are a major cause of poor performance, poor eaters, grumpy horses and generally poor doers. Do not use an imitation, they do not work.
Good quality hay and feed from a reputable feed company is also very important. Feeding a couple of flakes of good quality alfalfa or peanut hay per day can actually decrease the
incidence of stomach ulcers. A good nutrition program is based around the forage in the diet and not around the grain. An excellent supplement to feed show horses, broodmares, stallions and weanlings and yearlings is Platinum Performance. This supplement adds the extra vitamins, minerals, omega 3 fatty acids and a multitude of other nutrients that help give
peak performance.
The last topic for maintaining your show horse is soundness. If he is already sound, as he should be, then there are a few things you can do besides the information in the paragraphs above to keep him that way. Adequan injections are an excellent preventative for sore joints. I would advise supplementing any needed joint injections with weekly to monthly intramuscular injections of Adequan during any heavy showing or training period. Intramuscular injections of Adequan help replace some needed substances in an inflamed joint and they can prolong the time between joint injections. When you have your horse’s joints injected, make sure you have them injected with the highest quality and highest molecular weight hyaluronate and if you use steroid, always use a steroid that is “chondroprotective” such as triamcimilone.
These preceding paragraphs really barely touch on all the things it takes to keep that “winning edge” but hopefully they will give you a lot of food for thought. Good luck at all your shows and races!

biweekly or monthly injection schedule might help maintain a balanced joint by helping the joint produce its own hyaluronate and decreasing enzymes and inflammation that are harmful to the joint. There are many forms of polysulfated glycosamino-glycan being sold, but these formulations might differ in properties such as pH and other factors that affect bioavailability. Adequan can also be used to treat an unhealthy joint by using a dose regimen decided upon by the veterinarian team. It can be injected intramuscularly, but can also be given intra-articularly (injected into the joint).
Helping Heal Damagejoint disease is a process. it can start with a little synovitis (inflammation of the joint lining) and general inflammation. This leads to pain, which leads to abnormal use of the limb, which leads to abnormal weight bearing on the opposite limb. This leads to a cascade of problems, including abnormal wear and tear on the opposite leg. This domino effect makes prevention such an important component of the treatment of joint disease.
Preventive Supplementsthere are a multitude of joint supplements that claim to do everything from dissolving chip fractures to promoting health by increasing the level of hyaluronate in the joint to removing OCD (osteochondritis dissecans) lesions. These supplements all fall under the class of medication known as nutraceuticals.
Nutraceuticals are not regulated by the FDA; therefore it is up to each company to make sure its product meets its claims. There are some companies that actually do research to test their product to a great degree, but many do not. Beware of the phrases “clinically tested” and “veterinary approved.” These phrases mean different things with different companies. Nutraceuticals are an area that you can spend your money wisely or you can totally waste it. Be sure to use a trusted product.
There are other medications that can help protect the joint. Polysulfated glycosaminoglycan, sold as Adequan, has been proven to go to the joint after an intramuscular injection. Depending on the horse’s training schedule, a weekly,

very common presentation of EGUS, it is very important to have horses with any of the clinical symptoms properly diagnosed.
EGUS is diagnosed through evaluation of the horse’s his-tory, clinical signs, results of endoscopy of the stomach and response to treatment. Besides the symptoms mentioned previously, other clinical signs include excessive salivation, teeth grinding, gastric reflux, depression, poor appetite and abdominal pain.
Endoscopy with a three-meter endoscope is required to confirm the presence of gastric ulcers in the adult horse. With the endoscopic examination, the location and severity of the lesions can be observed. Follow-up endoscopic examinations can be used to evaluate response to treatment.
The lesions are usually graded 1-3, with a 0 score having no lesions; 1 having intact mucosa but mild reddening and mild thickening of keratin layer of cells; 2 indicating large single or multifocal lesions or extensive superficial lesions; and 3 indi-cating extensive lesions with areas of apparent deep ulceration.
Treatment there are several treatments for egus. these treatments include omeprazole, sucralfate, antacids, H-2 receptor antago-nists and a few others that are meant to stop the physiological pathway of ulcer development.
Antacids that are commonly available increase the gastric pH for about two hours post-administration and might decrease signs of EGUS for a very short time, but there appears to be no long-term effect. These antacids would have to be given six times per day to affect the pH in a consistent manner, but even then there has been no evidence that these medications are effective in healing gastric ulcers.
H-2 receptor antagonists suppress gastric acid secretion by binding to histamine (H-2) receptors. H-2 receptor antago-nists include medications such as ranitidine and cimeti-dine. Ranitidine with every-eight-hour dosing has been shown to treat and heal gastric ulcers. Cimetidine, even with
every-six-hour dosing, has not been shown to heal equine gastric ulcers.
Omeprazole completely suppresses acid secretion by bind-ing with the cell membrane H+-K+ proton pump. The effects of omeprazole can last as long as 27 hours. A dose of omeprazole can suppress gastric acid production within 30 minutes and has been noted at a dose of 4mg/kg to provide significant healing of gastric ulcers in horses receiving NSAIDs when given once daily for 28 days. In one study, horses in training receiving omeprazole at a dose of 1mg/kg for 28 days, 82 percent remained free of gastric ulcers when compared to the control group where only 10 percent remained ulcer free. Omeprazole is available in the form of a USDA-approved drug in the medications GastroGard and UlcerGard by Merial.
EGUS is primarily a quiet disease. Many aspects of the disease can be prevented by the way we manage horses, such as keeping them as stress free as possible and gradually intro-ducing them to stressful situations so that instead of being stressful, those situations become nonstressful or at least less stressful. A few pounds per day of legume hay will go a long way to act as a buffer in the stomach.
EGUS is just another aspect of total health management for athletes, and the difference between acknowledging the prob-lem and ignoring it can be the difference between a healthy and happy horse and a sick, poor-doing horse, or the differ-ence between winning and losing. Remember that taking care of the horse is job No. 1. Everything else is secondary.

The first step was taken in Kentucky, the second in Maryland. The third would be taken in New York. After his victory in the Preakness, California Chrome became the 13th horse to
bid for the Triple Crown since Affirmed last won it in 1978. Even though his twelve predecessors were uniquely remarkable, each failed to pass “The Test of the Champion” and win the Belmont Stakes. The resulting 36 year drought without a Triple Crown win-ner remained the longest in racing history, yet many refused to lose hope and instead still found themselves captivated again as ‘Chrome embarked on his own historic run.
While the centerpiece of Belmont Stakes day was undoubtedly the race itself, the New York Racing Association (NYRA) further en-hanced the spectacle by adding additional stakes races to the un-dercard, making it the grandest day of racing short of the Breed-ers’ Cup. Surpassing it’s own “Super Saturday,” traditionally run every fall at Belmont Park and featuring five Grade 1 races, NYRA shuffled it’s stakes schedule to host a total of nine stakes races on Belmont day, including six Grade 1 races, highlighted by ‘Chrome’s run in the Belmont Stakes. The table was indeed set for a tremen-dous day of racing.
Despite the growing excitement leading up to the day, there contin-ued to be reason that the task of winning the Triple Crown remained daunting. As the Triple Crown exists during the span of a mere five weeks, many horses attempting to sweep the three races became simply exhausted during the Belmont Stakes. This is exacerbated by the difficult length of the Derby and Preakness as races in con-duction with the Belmont Stakes, at 1 1/2 miles, being the longest of all and is likely the farthest distance any of its entrants will ever contest.
Further, the growing trend involved many of the horses exiting the Derby as losers, choose to skip the Preakness and rest while awaiting the Belmont. This exact scenario played out this year as California Chrome was only accompanied in the Preakness by two other Derby entrants; Ride On Curlin and General A Rod. Each of the other seven Preakness contenders were the so called “new shooters” that ailed to quality for the Derby. However, the Belmont Stakes would see the return of other, well rested contenders including Derby second place finisher Commanding Curve, the second betting choice from the Derby, Wicked Strong, Medal Count and Samraat. Ride On Curlin and General A Rod joined in the fray as well and became the only horses other than ‘Chrome to contest all three legs of

the Triple Crown. Equally concerning, the Belmont field was rounded out by four other horses who altogether skipped the Derby and Preak-ness (they did not have enough earned points to enter the Derby) and instead focused on capturing the Belmont. These contenders included Commissioner, Matterhorn, Matuszak and most notably, Tonalist, who
won the Peter Pan Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park, the main prep for the Belmont Stakes.
With that, ten horses entered the Belmont Stakes, but most hearts remained solely with one. Cali-fornia Chrome worked brilliantly up to the Belmont Stakes and this time there were no concerns about slow times in previous races or a heard cough days before the race. Instead, the only concern was the race itself and the growing history that stated the task was too much to ask.
As the 3-5 morning line favor-ite, California Chrome entered post position two of the Belmont starting gate, and awaited his date with destiny.
The crowd erupted in cheers, the bell rang and the gates flew open.
Trouble was immediately found. At first glance it looked as if Cali-fornia Chrome stumbled out of the gate Instead, Matterhorn (3), just to ‘Chrome’s right, veered into the dual classic winner and stepped on the back of his right front hoof, tearing off a chunk of it. It was only

steps into the race and Califor-nia Chrome now had a substan-tial wound to endure for the next 1 1/2 miles. Despite the mis-hap, California Chrome cleared the gate relatively well and at-tempted to establish a good racing position. However, the inside post position kept him on the rail as many of the horses to his right closed on him. One of these horses, Commissioner (8), surprisingly moved for the lead and held it as the field entered the clubhouse turn. Whereas in the Derby and Preakness, jock-ey Victor Espinoza, was able to clear California Chrome to the outside in a prime stalking position, the Belmont proved different and he was forced to race from the inside, on the rail, a position ‘Chrome histori-cally didn’t enjoy. Nonetheless, California Chrome settled in his position off the pace while Commissioner set an opening 1/4 mile of 24.06 with General A Rod (10) in second to his out-side. Tonalist (11) moved up from the outside and into third as California Chrome remained stuck on the rail and shuffled back into fourth. General A Rod moved closer to the pacesetting Commissioner as the field com-pleted 1/2 mile in 48.52. Wick-ed Strong (9) raced in fifth to the outside of ‘Chrome and Medal Count (1) sat in sixth and near the rail. The field maintained this position through 3/4 mile in 1:12.84 until entering the fi-

nal turn and Espinoza found room to move ‘Chrome to the outside and around the three horses in front of him. However, this position hung ‘Chrome four wide and needing to cover additional ground around the giant Belmont turn. Meanwhile, Medal Count moved into fifth and re-mained on the rail while Tonalist began asserting pressure on the leaders as the field finished one mile in 1:37.13. Entering the stretch, Commis-sioner continued to lead from the rail while General A Rod held second to his outside, Tonalist third outside of him, and California Chrome con-tinued to race four wide in fourth, but finally with a clear path in front of him. Commissioner continued to hold the lead as General A Rod faded and Medal Count moved up. Tonalist continued to grind into second and bared down on the lead. California Chrome fought to his outside but didn’t show the same “push button” move he had displayed it in the Derby and Preakness; it appeared he was finally tiring. Wicked Strong continued to fight from off the pace and to ‘Chrome’s right. Nearing the finish Tonalist inched closer to Commissioner and the two hit the wire almost simultaneously. Medal Count finished in third just behind them and California Chrome and Wicked Strong were similarly close, contest-ing for fourth. The final verdict had Tonalist edging Commissioner by a head to win the Belmont Stakes. Medal Count was one length behind and California Chrome and Wicked Strong finished in a dead heat for fourth, just 3/4 of a length behind Medal Count.

For the 13th time since 1978, a horse failed in his bid to win the Tri-ple Crown. Despite the disappointment immediately felt, California Chrome truly lost nothing more than a race. Instead, he further vali-dated his ability as a racehorse, never giving up despite poor racing luck and enduring an injury immediately after leaving the starting gate. On another day, with better luck, he just might have ended the drought that has long plagued racing fans.
However, ‘Chrome’s gutsy effort was immediately overshadowed when his co-owner, Steve Coburn, during a post-race interview, slammed the connections of Tonalist and other entrants that did not contest all three Triple Crown races. While speaking with NBC’s Kenny Rice, Coburn staid, “Well, I thought he was gaining ground, but he didn’t have it in him, apparently. You know what? He’s been in three, this is his third very big race. These other horses, they always set ‘em out. They set

‘em out and try to upset the apple cart. I’ll never see, I’m 61 years old and I’ll never see in my lifetime, I’ll never see another Triple Crown winner because of the way they do this. It’s not fair to these horses that have been in the game since day one. I look at it this way, if you can’t make enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby, you can’t run in the other two races.” When Rice asked a question to clarify what Coburn was saying, he continued, “That’s right, it’s all or nothing. It’s all or nothing because this is not fair to these horses that have been running their guts out for these people and for the people that believe in them. To have somebody to come up like, this is a coward’s way out, in my opinion. This is a coward’s way out.” Finally, in response to Rice asking if Coburn felt the other contenders “came right after” his horse, Coburn said, “Yes, exactly. Our horse had a target on his back. Everybody else lays out one, or they won’t run in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness, they’ll wait until the Belmont. You know what? If you’ve got a horse, run him in all three. If you’ve got a horse that can, that, Carolyn (Coburn says as he attempts to redirect his wife Caro-lyn’s efforts to stop him from continuing). If you’ve got a horse that
earns points to run in the Kentucky Derby, those 20 horses that start in Kentucky are the only 20 eligible to run in all three races. This is the cowards way out.”
While Coburn eventually apologized for his statements, the initial ef-fect cast a dark cloud over the wonderful story that was Dumbass Part-ners and the amazing accomplishments of their valiant horse. In actu-ality, Coburn expressed valid points regarding the nature of the Triple Crown, but the timing of and manner in which he chose to go about voicing these concerns was in poor form.
Despite some validity, Coburn appeared to struggle realizing the Triple Crown is, in many ways, purposefully designed as exceedingly difficult and possibly even unfair. In fact, it is this difficulty that makes it so special and one of the rarest accomplishments in sports. Changing this format would essentially cheapen the experience and allure that is the Triple Crown. Instead, it’s inherent difficulty is what draws us back

Tonalist heads back to his barn with a garland of c a r n a t i o n s and a classic victory to his credit.
Steve Heuertz BioIt started with a horse named Cowboy. Disregarded and discounted, this nine-year-old Red Dun Quarter Horse left his life as a ranch horse in South Dakota and ventured a new path into the life of Steve Heuertz in 2004. Shortly thereafter, a bond was formed that fully catapulted Steve into the world of the horse where he became fascinated with the wonderful capabilities of this majestic animal.Of particular interest were the speed, endurance and competitive spirit demonstrated by the equine heroes within the sport of Thoroughbred Racing. Although initially satisfied with observing from afar, Steve became increas-ingly captivated by the sport and turned toward capturing the splendor of racing via his other passion, photogra-phy. The result was a recipe where he could combine his great love for horses, racing and photography into one harmonious blend that was greater than the sum of its parts. Since then, racing has taken Steve across the country to such wonderful places as Saratoga Race Course, Churchill Downs, Santa Anita Park, Pimlico Race Course, Belmont Park, Keeneland and Hooiser Park. During these travels, Steve has been fortunate to witness and photograph equally wonderful races such as the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes (racing’s famed Triple Crown) as well as the Travers Stakes, Santa Anita Derby, Indiana Derby, Stephen Foster Handicap and Breeders’ Cup, among others. However, residing in the Chicago suburb of St. Charles, IL, Steve regularly frequents Arlington Park and Hawthorne Race Course where he has enjoyed capturing magnificent races like the Arlington Million and Hawthorne Gold Cup.Today, Steve’s passion for horses, racing and photography is like a fire that continues to be stoked. While either behind the lens capturing the thrill of a Grade 1 race or in the saddle loping around a field with Cowboy, Steve has learned to operate under the simple truth that the more he is able to involve the horse in his life, the happier his days become.

to it, continually waiting for the one to re-ceive the baton passed from Affirmed. Until then, we will continue to wait, for as long as it takes.
That California Chrome was not that horse is nothing for his connections and fans to feel saddened about. This remarkable ani-mal transcended the racing community and took the collective public along for a magi-cally memorable ride in the spring of 2014. It was a ride that reminded us that true great-ness isn’t a birth right or something that can be bought only by the deepest of pockets. Instead, it’s potential can exist in any us, whether we be of the equine or human va-riety. The only thing that matters is that we have the fortitude to believe in it, even in the face of repeated failure and especially when it seems hopelessly impossible. For that, we as racing fans are forever grateful. Thank you California Chrome, you remind us of why we love this sport. Without such love, any crown wouldn’t even be worthy of wearing.

Your mentor? My dad, my grandma Rhoda and Ross Carna-han. My dad and grandma help me a lot with barrels and I go to papaw when I need help with poles.
Horses (names.details)? Leo’s Stormin Venture he is a 20 year old gray. He loves running poles but we also do good run-ning barrels. My grandma got him for me after my papaw Jerry passed away to help keep me busy and keep my mind off of loosing my papaw. I think Leo is my once in a lifetime horse...he’s amazing!
Your accomplishments? I placed 5th in the Novice Youth Poles at the AQHA Congress in 2012, that was the first year I had Leo. I won the NPBA 13 & under pole bending in 2013 at
the NPBA Championship.
Your goals? To get in the Top 5 at the AQHA Youth World in Pole Bending, to win the youth pole bending at Congress and to get a Top Dog spot in the Youth in IBRA Indiana.
Hobbies other than horses? I like to hunt, fish and hang out with friends.
If you were a horse what breeding would you be and why? A SHARP LEO, they produce great barrel horses or a JET MOON because that breed has been in our family for a long time and we have had many barrels horses out of Jet Moon.
Any words of advice for fellow barrel rac-ers? Keep pushing and NEVER give up

Clint is a graduate of East Central High School. His parents are Terrie VanVolkenburgh and respectively Joe Trentman. He has grown up in the horse world, both parents have rode almost all their life...Clint's grandfather as some of you may remember was the late Terry VanVolkenburgh, who would run up and down the fences when his daughters would run barrels. Clint began barrel racing at the age of 4 with a pony, then went on to particpate in Jr. Rodeo and his favorite event was the sheep riding, hard to believe he is now a barrel racer. He has won the Ohio Youth NBHA and Indiana Youth and Open NBHA , he has also won the Congress youth barrel four times, and was runner up in the Congress Sweepstakes. He placed at Josey Jr. world numerous times, and won the NBHA Youth World 1D in 2006. He loves to barrel race and is now trying his hand at the futurities. In Clint's spare time he mows grass for a part time job and is also very active in his church where he and his cousins are bible school helpers. Congratulations to our lucky winners, Gary and Belinda Wiggington, from Bloomfield, Indiana for being the proud new owners of the 2014 Merhow Victory 2 horse bumper pull trailer. Gary and Belinda bought one lucky ticket at the Hoosier Horse Fair in April. When we called them from the IJRA State Finals on August 10th to let them know they had won, they met us at C bar C two hours later and chose the trailer over the $4,500. What a week!! Fun filled memories we made by everyone!
Twelve rodeos and one hang on the edge of your seat short go!
Four members in each event represented Team Indiana against the best of the best in 48 states, Canada, and Australia. All of our team went out and held their own. There were some disap-pointments with a tipped barrel or the brush of a pole that fell, a few misses in the roping, or some rides just shy of the buzzer. This team had nothing to hang their heads over! When competing at this level, there are bound to be some nerves that cause a little more jit-ters than usual. Each contestant still had really great go rounds, including our competing Indi-ana Queen, Miss Juliana Wyatt. Juliana came back with 10th in modeling and 12th with her speech and impromptu question.
The seven long days were not just spent roping and riding. There were trade shows filled with
vendors and booths. Many of the contestants also competed in small scholarship ropingsand jackpots. Sydney Hurley and Katlyn O’Leary won second place along with $1200 in scholar-ships, and headstalls in an all girls Heel-O-Matic roping. Each state competed in a volleyball tour-nament and a knowledge bowl. Several of the Indiana competitors even found a couple cliffs to jump off into a lake. White water rafting in Utah was also a very happening trip among families at Nationals. There was never a dull moment for anyone.

First, the statements are posted with the permission of a very brave student.
Second, every year I give my students an assignment called “What’s Up With Kids”, as a prelude to the juvenile law sections. And without ques-tion, its my favorite assignment. It allows them to identify 3 problems “WITH” (things that are wrong with kids, i.e. attitudes, laziness, etc.) kids and 3 problems “FOR” (thingsthat affect them negatively exter-nally, ie. peer pressure, drugs, etc.) kids. It also allows them to say 3 ways that parents make it worse/better for kids. They are encouraged to “think outside the box” (I hate that phrase) and to say what they want.
This is done in a PowerPoint presentation in class in front of their peers.
Yesterday, one of my students put his presentation up on the screen and said, “Do I have to talk?” I said “if you are ok with how it might affect your presentation grade, then that’s fine.” In my head, I thought “well, that’s not going to help his grade.” (Note to self: Chris, you’re an idiot sometimes!)
As he began his presentation, it was obvious that he had experienced a lot already in 17 years.
He then put up the following two statements:
• My friends told me about this party at this abandoned warehouse on Friday night. I know there’s going to be alcohol involved, and someone there is supposed to bring some marijuana. I don’t drink or do drugs, but I don’t want them to think I’m a loser.
• My dad used to hit my mom a lot, I called the police. Then my dad got back with my mom, then two nights ago, he punched her again in the ear. It’s been bleeding for days, she rang the police and he ran away. I’m scared he might come back and hurt us, but also, every time I walk past there and stop in my house where he did it, I remember it and get scared.
If you are a parent, read those again; if you are a human being, read them again.
Read the last three words of the first one “...I’m a loser”, if he doesn’t drink and do drugs.
Now take a couple more moments and read the second one a third time.
Now, get on your knees (figuratively) and pray for the kids of this coun-try, county, city! What they experience today is worse than us “walking two miles uphill both ways in the snow everyday to school.”
I’m privileged to have this young man (and all my students) in my classroom.

If you haven’t seen the ads for a major company that include the “Easy Button,” you should still be able to figure out what the “Easy Button” could signify.
It’s the idea that we need an easy way out of predicaments and life’s hard lessons.
The problem is that there is no such button.
Sorry to burst your bubble. Life is hard.
Sometimes, as Christians who want to bring others to Jesus, we “sugarcoat” the message and (unintentionally) mislead people into thinking that if they find Jesus life will be all puppies and marshmallows. It won’t. (Sorry again...)
No where in the bible does it tell us that life will be a bed of roses once we turn our lives over to God. There are plenty of verses in scripture that give us a “heads up” on this.
2 Timothy 3:1212Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.
1 Peter 4:12-1412Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: 13But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.
There are many more. As a matter of fact, in John 16:33, Jesus himself even warns us that we will have trouble.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Now don’t panic, read that verse again.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
We will definitely have troubles in this world. BUT, the part we need to focus on, and more importantly share with others, is that in HIM we may have PEACE....because HE has already overcome the world.
Once we establish a relationship with Jesus, he will stick closer than a brother. In Proverbs 18:24 we are reassured of this.
Proverbs 18:24A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
If the road gets tough, just remember we can reach out for support from the one who knows our weaknesses better than we do. Each step we take on this journey as Christians is a step towards a stronger and more perfect version of ourself. Scripture tells us that God is perfecting us.
Philippians 1:6Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
We are all on our own journey and no two journeys are alike. Each of us is on our own journey, designed specifically for us. The one thing our journeys have in common is that we all have our own “mountains to climb” along the way.
I try to think of it like this...Each trial is a mountain and Jesus climbs it with me, there if I need help or just for moral support. As I climb, I get stronger. Just like when we exercise, we build strength and stamina, so when we fight through daily struggles, we build strength and stamina that will allow us to climb the next mountain on our own personal journey. And yes, there will be more.
We will be “climbing” until our time here is over, but don’t be discouraged or afraid.
Isaiah 41:10Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.
Keep putting one foot in front of the other and climb on up that mountain.

Salvation is a gift and a choice......Jesus died on the cross as the final sacrifice for our sins. He was resurrected on the 3rd day and he defeated death and Satan for us. All we have to do is believe that He beat death, acknowledge it with our words and accept Him as our personal savior. That’s when the rebirth happens and we are changed! He then promises us eternal life with Him in Heaven! You can’t earn your way into Heaven; you have to accept His gift of salvation. So many people think they “aren’t good enough” to get to Heaven… But… Salvation is a GIFT from God and you don’t earn a gift. Gifts are given to you and for the gift to be yours, you have to accept it. All we have to do is accept this wonderful gift. I know I have…won’t you?
But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many. Romans 5:15
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
That if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. Romans 10: 9-10

Proud Azteca defeats older horses in AJ Foyt Stakes at Indiana Grand
Racing & CasinoSHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 6, 2014 – The youngest horse in the field proved to be the toughest as Proud Azteca and rider Francisco Torres took home top honors in the 11th running of the $85,000-added AJ Foyt Stakes Wednesday, Aug. 6 at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino.
Only three-years-old, Proud Azteca was facing a field of older, more seasoned veterans in the 12-horse lineup on the turf. He was the only horse in the field with lifetime earnings less than $100,000, proving the depth of experience in the one and one-sixteenth mile race.
Breaking from post four, Proud Azteca was in the thick of the action from the start. Father Mick and rider Rodney Prescott scooted out to an early lead along the inside with immediate pressure from I’m Bound-toscore and rider Juan Saez from the outside. A host of other horses were vying for position behind the top two.
I’m Boundtoscore emerged as the leader heading down the backstretch and opened up several lengths on Father Mick, who in turn was several lengths ahead of the rest of the field. Proud Azteca was sitting comfort-ably in fourth on the outside of Short Round and Jeremy Rose. The field tightened up heading into the final turn and by the top of the stretch, there were several horses ready to pounce on the leaders.
“I thought he (Proud Azteca) would be further back early,” said Torres. “He was aggressive early, and I took a hold of him, but after that, he was all professional. When I called on him he was ready to go.”
I’m Boundtoscore was not giving in and maintained his position on the front. Torres had Proud Azteca rolling and after a brief battle, easily passed up the leader en route to a victory by one and one-half lengths over I’m Boundtoscore. Ironically, Unreachable Star, the oldest horse in the field at age 10, saved ground along the inside for jockey Leandro Goncalves and finished a strong third, representing both the youngest and the oldest horses in the field in the top three.
“It’s always hard for a younger horse to step up against older horses but he (Proud Azteca) proved himself today,” said Torres, who was aboard
for the first time in the horse’s short career. “I think coming into this race, he probably needed a race last time out.”
Proud Azteca just missed the win in his previous start, a second place finish in the $85,000-added Snack Stakes. All seven of his career starts have been over the turf. Unraced at two, the Kitten’s Joy chestnut colt is owned by Brenda Tabraue and Jorge Herrera. The Indiana bred is now three for seven in 2014 with earnings in excess of $130,000. Proud Azteca is trained by Mike Maker.
The win in the AJ Foyt by Proud Azteca was the second on the card for Maker, who also had a win with Wild Swava in the afternoon’s seventh race, the $85,000-added Florence Henderson Stakes. Torres also rode that winner for Maker.
Mister Pollard prevails in Governor’s Stake at Indiana Grand Racing & CasinoSHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 6, 2014 – Mister Pollard and rider Ricardo Santana Jr. were much the best in the 11th running of the $150,000-guaranteed Governor’s Stake at Indiana Grand Racing & Casino Wednesday, Aug. 6. The duo covered the one mile, 70 yard dis-tance in a time of 1:41.64 as the second choice in the nine-horse field.
Starting from post nine could have proved to be a tough task for Mis-ter Pollard. However, Santana, Jr. accepted the challenge and rallied out early to be within striking distance of the pace, set early by Just a Morgan and Octavio Vergara Jr. Mister Pollard sat patiently in third alongside Bourne Free and Olaf Hernandez through early fractions of :23.32 and :47.59.
Mister Pollard had obeyed his orders up until the final turn. The three-year-old son of Pollard’s Vision began his move and by the top of the stretch, was on the lead. That lead increased as he moved down the stretch, opening up to a seven and three-quarter length win. Notion-ofmine and Fernando De La Cruz rallied up for second over Huntstown and Malcolm Franklin, who saved ground along the inside to finish third.
“I had the best horse today,” said Santana, Jr. “Because of the outside post, I didn’t want to be in trouble. He was easy going the whole time and he was flying in the stretch.”

Mister Pollard coasted to his first win of 2014 in his sixth outing. Owned by Jim and Scott Farrar, Mike Johnson’s Falcon Racing Stable and Penny Lauer, he now has in excess of $240,000 in his career. Mister Pollard has never finished worse than third over Indiana Grand’s dirt surface in six lifetime starts for trainer Mike Lauer. His last start over the turf at Indiana Grand proved the change in surface did not agree with him.
“He (Mister Pollard) didn’t run well over the turf,” said Lauer. “In fact, I think that was probably the worst race of his life. I thought it might be tough out of the nine hole, but when I saw where he was and what horses were in front of him, I thought he was sitting perfect. I thought at the half-mile he would win it. He was running smoothly and at that point, it was his race to lose.”
Lauer has been associated with Mister Pollard his entire life. Lauer and his wife, Penny, raised the foal from their mare, Sweet Summer, at their farm located between Louisville, Ky. and Lexington, Ky. They have teamed up for many stakes winners in the state of Indiana over the years, including Dreamin Big, who is the richest Indiana bred female of all-time with nearly $550,000 in earnings.
“He (Mister Pollard) is a very calm, very classy little horse,” said Lauer. “He stood in the paddock like a police pony. He’s really a neat horse to be around.”
Mister Pollard paid $6.60, $3.80 and $2.80 across the board. All four of his career wins have now been recorded at Indiana Grand.

SHELBYVILLE, Ind.; – Aug. 16, 2014 – Nominations were strong for the first running of the Paul Tinkle ITOBA Stallion Season Colts and Geldings Stakes as well as the ITOBA Stallion Season Fillies Stakes. Nominations closed Wednesday, Aug. 13 with 34 in the colts and geld-ings division while the list for the fillies included 17 nominations. Heading the list of nominations for the colts and geldings stakes is Union Express, winner of the $85,000-added Sagamore Sired Stakes earlier this year at Indiana Grand. The chestnut son of Unbridled Ex-press has two wins and two seconds in eight starts this year and will move back to the dirt surface after an ineffective start over the turf course in the Snack Stakes. Joining Union Express on the list of nominations includes Walden Forest, who is undefeated in two starts. The Forest Danger gelding is trained by Brian Waltz and a start in the Paul Tinkle ITOBA Stallion Season stakes would be his first among stakes company.
In the filly division of the ITOBA Stallion Season Fillies, Lena Love has already recorded three wins this season for trainer Bob Gorham. The City Weekend filly is currently on a two race win streak after de-feating competition in her last two outings at Thistledown. The ITOBA Stallion Season Fillies would be her first stakes start.
Another filly on the nomination list is Deliver from the Tommy Short Stable. The Article of Faith filly has five starts and one win this year with nearly $100,000 in career earnings. Deliver won two starts ago at Mountaineer Park. The stakes races are for three year old registered Indiana bred prog-eny of donated stallions that sold at the ITOBA Live Auction or were deemed as Reserve Not Attained (RNA) Internet Auction. The payment schedule began in October of 2011 and continued through the final nomination deadline this past week. The race will be limited to 10 start-ers. If more than 10 are entered for the Wednesday, Aug. 27 event, then horses will be given preference on highest lifetime earnings.
Live Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing continues through Saturday, Nov. 1 offering racing Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 2:05 p.m. with Friday and Saturday action beginning at 5:05 p.m. For more information, visit the Web-site at indianagrand.com.

Circus seemed to be the right name for this place last month. This month it feels more like a rehab facility for dogs.
A few days ago Duke somehow managed to get himself in a mess. He’s not talking about it and the people don’t know what happened to him, but needless to say he was pretty torn up.
His whole right flank (you horse people should know that term) was ripped open by something. Like I said, he’s not talking about it. Maybe
he’s embarrassed or maybe he doesn’t remember. Needless to say, he had to make an emergency trip to see the vet. He even spent the night.
When he returned home the next day, he was all sewn up like Maybelline’s bear (she loves her bear.) He was also pretty swollen and sore and wearing a cone like I’ve seen the other dogs wear. I feel sorry for the poor guy - he is in pain and he looks ridiculous. If the cone wasn’t enough, then the people decided that he
needed a belly wrap too. And he has to stay inside until they take out the tubes and stitches. Wonderful.
While he was gone, I realized just how good of friends he and that rooster have become. The rooster slept outside the kitchen window (instead of in the barn) waiting for Duke to return. I should’ve noticed that they hang out all the time. The rooster does think he is a dog, maybe Duke thinks so too.
Forget YouTube, maybe I should just contact MTV or Animal Planet.
