February Program
What’s NEW?
Trips to local nurseries never fail to in-
spire. But where do the new offerings come
from? How are they developed? Judson
Lecompte, Research and Development Man-
ager at J. Berry Nurseries, is an award winner
in the nursery industry. J. Berry’s innovations
include finding, breeding, and testing new
plants and bringing better genetics to the
nursery supply chain. Judson will share infor-
mation about the attributes of these innovative
offerings, such as hardiness, colors, disease
resistance, and why these new plants deserve
a place in our home landscapes.

President’s Message
According to the groundhog, we have six more weeks of winter ahead of us. The GGC
calendar is chock full of activities to keep you busy during the remaining weeks of winter.
But first, some thanks and congratulations are in order!
On January 27th, volunteers from the Blackland Prairie
Raptor Center brought several of their birds to the Grape-
vine Public Library to thrill the 28 GGC members in attend-
ance and the public alike, including a large group of chil-
dren. Thanks to Karen Rice who scheduled the presentation
and worked with the library to host and publicize it, and
share the cost. And thanks to Dinah Chancellor who served
as M.C. and to Alexandra Evans who was on hand to sell
bird-related merchandise.
On February 3rd, Pam Braak was recognized at the
Grapevine PARD volunteer appreciation brunch for her
contribution to the Rose Rosette Trials. Congratulations,
Pam!
We have two Conventions coming up in the next cou-
ple of months. The District II Spring Convention will be
held on March 22nd in Denton, and the 90th Texas Garden
Clubs, Inc. 2018 Spring Convention will take place April
9th-12th in Fort Worth. Registration forms for both of
these events can be found in this newsletter.
Progress continues on the “Members Only” section of the website. Members received
the password for this section by e-mail. We rolled out online sign-ups for West Texas
Street with more to follow. And as a follow-up to our January general meeting, additional
information regarding the 21st Annual Great Backyard Bird Count and 2018 Year of the
Bird can be found on page 13.
If you’re looking to find your niche in this very large club of ours, please check out
Flowercade, the Redbud Project, West Texas Street, docent activities at the GBG, and the
myriad of other activities and volunteer opportunities detailed in this newsletter.

West Texas Street Workday, February 13th
It’s not too late to sign up for our workday on West Texas Street on Tuesday, February
13th at 9:00 A.M. If you did not sign up at January general meeting and want to come
work with us, you can now go to the GGC website, click on the “Members Only” func-
tion, enter the secret password (which was provided to all members via e-mail) and you
will see a “SIGN UP” tab. Just enter your name, contact phone number, and e-mail ad-
dress in the places provided. Then select “Submit” and you are signed up! Even if you
have already signed up, you might want to check it out for next time.
We will be doing cleanup and a little pruning so bring the appropri-
ate tools and dress for the weather. Water will be provided. After our
work is completed, grab a few friends and head over to Main Street to
drink a cup of coffee or have a snack. Since our group is so big there is
not one place that can accommodate us, but the good news is we have
lots of places to choose from — Main Street Bread Baking, Jake’s, Ju-
dy’s Pies, and Redefined Coffee, just to name a few.
If you are new to the club, this is a great way to get involved and make some new
friends. And if you are new to gardening, come learn right along with the rest of us. We
work in the 300 block of West Texas Street, just off Church Street, two blocks from Main
Street in beautiful downtown Grapevine. If you have any questions, call me — I’m in the
book.

Certified Wildlife Habitat Programs — National and State
The GGC celebrates Bird Sanctuary Week every January, which reminds and encour-
ages us to prepare our gardens for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. February is the
perfect month to begin preparing our gardens for the return of the Monarch butterfly, for
birds building their nests, and for certifying your garden as a Certified Wildlife Habitat®
with the National Wildlife Federation.
To certify your garden as a Certified Wild-
life Habitat®, you must provide natural and/
or other food sources, water, cover, places to
raise young (without predators such as cats),
and use sustainable practices (e.g., no chemi-
cals, proper use of mulch, minimal water us-
age, and use of native plants). Garden size
does not matter. If you provide the above re-
quirements — even in a small space — you
will qualify. Container gardens can provide
food, a birdbath will provide water, bird
houses will provide cover, and the cat can
stay indoors!
I encourage all GGC members to certify
their gardens online at www.nwf.org/certify.
Certification costs $20.00, and you may pur-
chase a sign or a garden flag at the same time,
if you wish, for an additional $30.00.
Membership includes the monthly National Wildlife magazine or an online magazine.
Both options provide a wealth of information concerning wildlife and nature in general.
Please let me know when your garden is certified! We hope for 100% membership!
A similar program for the state of Texas is currently on hold due to lack of staff
and a hiring freeze. We are monitoring the current freeze on activity and any chang-
es will be passed along to members. The website address for that program is:

What’s Going on at the GBG
Docent Program
We are in the process of revamping the Docent
Program at the GBG and are excited to announce that
going forward we will have specific themes for adult
and children’s tours. Additional themes will be devel-
oped in the near future.
On Wednesday, March 14th, we will be holding do-
cent training from 10:00 – 11:30 A.M. We will have a
sign-up table at the February general meeting.

Perennial Garden
The perennial garden is getting a makeover! In collaboration with the Tarrant County
Master Gardeners, GGC members are invited to work the third Friday of every month
from 9:00 – 11:00 A.M. beginning on Friday, March 16th. If you would like to join us and
be on the mailing list for future information, please contact Cindy Miller.

Redbud Tree Program
If you love trees, enjoy reading to children, and want to
impact future gardeners, the Redbud Tree Program is the
perfect volunteer project for you! On Thursday, May 3rd
and Friday, May 4th, GGC volunteers will visit third grade
classrooms in four elementary schools. We will discuss the
importance of trees, the differences among trees, what a
tree needs to grow, and the concept of photosynthesis —
and then will demonstrate the proper way to plant a tree.
You can present the lesson by yourself or with a partner,
and the lesson plan is included!
GGC volunteers will read the book Who Will Plant a Tree? to each class and leave a
copy of the book in each classroom’s library for the children to enjoy. We will also leave
February 27, 2018 9 www.grapevinegardenclub.org
redbud seedlings with the classroom teacher to distribute to each child to take home at
the end of the school day.
To prepare for this lesson, we will be meeting at the Greenhouse in
the GBG on Wednesday, May 2nd at 1:00 P.M. for a “bagging party.” We
will bag each of the saplings, attach planting and information sheets to
each bag, and then box up the saplings for each classroom.
Please sign up to be a presenter at one or more of the schools and/or
to be a “bagger.” We will be available to answer your questions and
have sign-up sheets at the February general meeting.

District II Spring Convention
The Garden Culture Club will host this year’s District II Spring
Convention on Thursday, March 22nd from 9:00 A.M. to 2:45 P.M. at
the Global Spheres Center in Denton. This year’s theme is “Planting
for Pollinators.” The program features a business meeting, lunch
buffet, and keynote speaker Donald Kenney of Painted Flower Farm
whose program is entitled “Monarch Butterflies, Milkweed and Pol-
linator Plants: The Three Legged Stool.”
The registration form, along with additional details, can be found on page 15 of this
newsletter.
Spring Luncheon News
Be sure to mark your calendars for the annual Spring Luncheon
scheduled for May 22nd at Lake Grapevine’s Trawick Pavilion.
This year’s luncheon theme is “Land that I Love” — and you will
love sharing salad and dessert with all your GGC friends! We will
install new officers, award scholarships, and have fun!
Things get started at 10:30 A.M., with lunch at 11:00 A.M. Sign up at the February
general meeting to bring either a salad or dessert. More details will follow, so save the
date.

I Dig Plants…Spring Plant Sale
The Spring Plant Sale is one of the largest events of the Club’s
year — and many volunteers are needed to make it a success. And
the success of the Sale is vital because this event helps to fund the
Club’s scholarships.
This year’s Sale will take place on Saturday, April 14th from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at
the GBG (a flyer can be found on page 14). Because the majority of the plants we sell
come from our members’ or friends’ gardens, the earliest preparation for the Sale comes
in the form of “digging parties,” groups of expert diggers who will show up at your home
at a predetermined time to thin out your beds and pot up the plants for the Sale.
“Heirloom Perennials” is what we’re looking for, so please check out the list below to de-
termine what you can contribute:
We ask that the potted plants remain at your home and be cared for by you until the
Sale.
Want to join a digging party? Don’t be
deterred if you don’t see yourself as able to
do a lot of digging. Tasks such as marking
the identifying plant stakes or trimming a
root ball for potting require minimal effort
and can be done sitting down. Make new
friends and share gardening experiences as
you help to make this year’s Sale a suc-
cess.
Contact Ella Barber to schedule a dig in your garden or to participate in a digging par-
ty. And watch for information in next month’s newsletter as to signing up to work at the
Sale.
