Through a Glass DarklyThrough a Glass DarklyThrough a Glass Darkly JUST BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T HEAR IT, DOESN’T MEAN IT WASN’T SAID: Communication is such a difficult thing. Just because you say something doesn’t mean that another heard you or understood what you were trying to say. It happens all the time. We cannot hear something intended for us or we can say something to another and they never heard it.

Every Christmas and Easter the Sunday mass schedule changes. We announce it. We publish it in the church paper. We send out a message on the App. We post it on the website and put it on the sign. And every year there are people who “didn’t get the message” and show up at the wrong time. And this is not just the visitors. More often it is also the regulars who attend mass each week. As soon as they hear or see “mass schedule” they click off their receptors because they “know” what the mass schedule is.

My father was the C.E.O. of a printing and advertising firm. He used to say that getting the correct message was only half the battle. If you advertised an event too early, people would mentally click off the ad the next time they saw it. If you advertised too late, people couldn’t make plans to attend. If you were using media to advertise something, you had to make sure that your target audience was on the same channel. Advertising a rock concert on NPR probably wouldn’t get you too far.

Since all of us are both guilty of missing the message, or of having our message missed, think of how much more difficult it is to hear what God is saying to us. God communicates with us in so many ways and through so many different “media” yet still we miss it. Just because we don’t hear the message doesn’t mean that God isn’t speaking. God speaks to us through the rustle of the wind, or the beauty of nature but we are too worried about other things to hear.

At some point we are going to face our Creator and if we say to God, “You didn’t tell me.”, he will say in return, “You weren’t listening.”

Tim Smith has written a wonderful song that we use in church, “Give Me Ears to Listen.” Maybe we should sing that song each day.

THIS AND THAT: LABOR DAY I always thought that it was funny that on Labor Day we didn’t work. The original idea of Labor Day came from the earliest labor union movement following the Civil War. MARRIAGE: LOVE AND LIFE IN

THE DIVINE PLAN Natural Family Planning: “Natural family planning (NFP) methods represent authentic family planning. They can be used both to achieve and to postpone a pregnancy. NFP makes use of periodic abstinence from sexual intercourse based upon the observation of the woman‘s natural signs of fertility, in order to space births or to limit the number of children when there is a serious reason to do so. NFP methods require that couples learn, accept, and live with the wonders of how God made them. This is essentially different from contraception.”

A PRAYER FOR OUR EARTH

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures.

You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty.

Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes.

Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction.

Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth.

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey toward your infinite light.

We thank you for being with us each day.

Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Amen.

- Laudato Si'

Welcome back to all the Lakers across the parking lot who have now completed two weeks of school. It is certainly great to have all the spirit and activity of the school right here on campus. From our first all school Mass and some winning football games to meet the teacher night and an all school photo with Principal Vanden Boom’s drone, it is

easy to see that the Lord is already doing great things for us this year. As I told the middle school and high school kids the first day of school, God has blessed us with the gift of another year together. May it be a year of growing closer in relationship with Jesus as His disciples and a year of growing closer with one another united in Him.

The Gospel today reminds us that Jesus walks among us to do great things with our lives: eyes that are blinded, ears that are deafened, and hearts that have grown cold are no match for the love of our Lord Jesus. He comes with great power to bring about change in the lives of those who accept Him as Lord and Savior. As disciples, we are all called to live our lives following the Master, allowing Him to be Lord of our lives. This does not limit our freedom. Instead it makes us truly who we were meant to be: sons and daughters of a God whose love for us knows no end. Like the man who was healed in the Gospel today, how can we not tell the wondrous works of the Lord in our own time?

You’ve probably noticed that my bulletin article does not yet have a title, the key word being yet. So, young Lakers, it’s up to you! I’m asking all our school age kids both in our school and in the parish to help me find the perfect title. If you have one you’d like to suggest, send me an e-mail to [email protected] with your submission. There may even be a prize for the winner!

Hope to see many of you out at the Renaissance festival on Labor Day for this important fundraiser. Wherever the holiday takes you, may it be a peaceful and relaxing time to rest in the Lord’s love with family and friends.

May Jesus, who opens ears and minds and hearts, bless your week.

CATECHISTS NEEDED

There are currently openings for catechists in the first through eighth grade classes. Through our Baptism we are called to share our faith and build up the Kingdom of God.

This vital ministry provides a terrific opportunity for personal growth in your faith as well as the chance to teach children to know, love and serve God and to spread His truth.

Any Catholic who has been Confirmed, is actively participating in his or her faith, enjoys kids and is willing to take Protecting God’s Children (a one-time, 3 hour class) is qualified to join our team. Having a child in the program or prior experience is not necessary. In addition to help and guidance throughout the year, catechist training is also available.

I ask that you prayerfully consider volunteering to be a part of the Religious Education Team. Religious Education classes meet on Tuesday evenings from 6:15-7:30pm and Wednesday evenings from 4:30–5:45 pm and 6:15-7:30 pm from September until May.

If you are willing to share your time and talent or even if you are just considering it, please contact Artha Horowitz or Ann Marie Chambers in the Religious Education Office at 248-623-0291

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION

OF ADULTS (R.C.I.A.)

CLASSES NOW FORMING

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a process in which those seeking to grow in an understanding of the Roman Catholic faith come together to explore Catholic beliefs. This process is designed for adults who are thinking of becoming Catholic, for those who know that they want to become Catholic as well as for those who have been baptized but have not yet completed their Sacraments of Initiation (Eucharist and/or Confirmation).

The program of Christian initiation begins in the fall of the year and continues through the end of the Easter season. People who take part in R.C.I.A. meet weekly on Tuesday evenings. Here is an atmosphere of welcome, prayer, education and fellowship. In no way does the R.C.I.A. process exert pressure on those who participate but instead allows for the opportunity to contemplate this important decision while learning the teachings of the Church.

Adults, who wish to be baptized, or complete the Sacraments of Initiation, are solemnly welcomed into the Church or into full communion at the Great Vigil of Easter. For more information about R.C.I.A. please contact the Religious Education Center at 248-623-0291.

DIVINE MERCY

Tell souls where they are to look for solace; that is, in the Tribunal of Mercy (the Sacrament of Reconciliation). There the greatest miracles take place. To avail ones self of this miracle, it is not necessary to go on a great pilgrimage or to carry out some external ceremony; it suffices to come with faith to the feet of My representative and to reveal to him one’s misery, and the miracle of Divine Mercy will be fully demonstrated.. (Diary 1448, part one)

There will be a gathering of the Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy on Tuesday, September 8th in the Chapel beginning at 7:00pm. All are welcome to join us.

ST. VINCENT de PAUL

JULY UPDATE

July was a very busy month for Our Lady of the Lakes St. Vincent de Paul. We had

parishioners and many families living in our boundaries that came to us for help. When we deal with parish members and those living within our parish boundaries we do help with more funds. We wrote checks totaling $13,638.17 and made deposits of $6,421.43. To help 129 individuals we made over 140 phone calls, 5 home visits, and had 10 interviews in the parish office.

It has come to our attention that we have had people with signs asking for money outside of church before and after our Masses. We ask you to please have them call or visit the parish center at 248-623-0274 and ask to speak to our St. Vincent de Paul. You can assure them that we will check into their personal situation. Please do not give out cash. We have a phone line that we answer daily. We deal with everyone that comes to us in a Christian way. We do not help everyone that comes to us. We do refer families to other churches or agencies. We have very strong knowledge of how a family can receive help. Unfortunately sometimes people will take advantage of Christian charity. Please help us help those in need in a responsible way.

Thank you for giving to Our Lady of the Lakes St. Vincent de Paul. All that we do is possible because you give!!

CONGRATULATIONS

Please welcome to our Christian Community: Liliana June, daughter of Austin and Elysse (Setchell) Freshour; and Alex Garrett, son of Garrett and Amy (Szymanski) Ignasiak.

They were recently Baptized at Our Lady of the Lakes. May God Bless them, protect them and guide them throughout their lives.

ROSARY GROUP

We are hoping to add new members to our rosary group. We meet at 1pm on Tuesdays at the home of Theresa Kulick. If interested please call 248-673-6930. "Where two or more gather in My name there I will be...."

CSA MINUTE

EVANGELIZATION

The Archdiocese of Detroit is partnering with ChristLife

for next Saturday’s “Following Christ and Sharing Christ”

training conference, which will provide discipleship and

evangelization tools to those engaged in adult faith

formation and evangelization in our parishes.

Attendees will learn to more fully embrace the Church’s

universal call to holiness and evangelization; help others

establish the spiritual disciplines of a Catholic disciple; learn

how to lead the Holy Spirit, forgiveness, and renunciation

prayer sessions presented in Following Christ; and discover

how to follow and share Jesus Christ in their ordinary daily

lives and become more fully a parish of missionary

disciples.

Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal help fund

“Following Christ and Sharing Christ,” to be led by ChristLife

founder and director Dave Nodar at Sacred Heart Major

Seminary on September 12, so those ministering in the

Archdiocese can attend for only $20, including training

materials and meals.

For information about CSA-funded ministries, programs,

and services, go to www.AOD.org.
