Issue 13 - February 2021
Dear Friends,I don't know if it's felt the same for you, but January seems to havepast by in flash. Perhaps that's because I'm back working full time inthe NHS.
Since starting my new role, I 've been working from home for 100% ofmy time. As those of you in a similar position know, whilst feeling veryfortunate to be working in a safe environment, spending hours a daysitting in front of a screen and in multiple virtual meetings on Teamsor Zoom, affects our wellbeing and we therefore have to ensure we'retaking good care of ourselves.
I 've therefore started to think a lot more about what I need to do tocounter the effects of moving less and of increased screen time; also,of how to set clear boundaries between work and home. In this andfuture issues, I 'll therefore be sharing tips and advice about thingswhich I've found helpful and I hope that you will too.
Sleeping well makes a real different to how I feel and how well Ifunction. I 've been drinking a cup of camomile tea and reading forabout 10-20minutes before I sleep and as a result, I seem to get tosleep more quickly and sleep more deeply.
I find movement and fresh air are vital to my wellbeing. Even if it'sraining I go for a walk once a day, for at least 20 minutes. I also set atimer to remind me to get up, move about (which sometimes involveshaving a dance to my favourite music) and have a drink of water atleast once an hour when I'm working at my desk. It also gives my eyesa rest from looking at the computer screen.
I hope that you enjoy this month’s e-letter and
find the resources I’ve shared as helpful as I
have. I 'd love to hear your tips and
recommended resources:

7 TYPES OF REST THAT EVERYONE NEEDS
Physical
Mental
Sensory
Creative
Emotional
Social
Spiritual
Rest and sleep are not the same things. Sleep is only one of the 7 types
of rest we need to thrive. The 7 types of rest are:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
In her fascinating Ideas.TED.Com article and associated TED Talk, Dr
Saundra Dalton-Smith talks us through the 7 types of rest and gives us
some ideas of how we can get more of them and avoid rest-deficit.

ONE WAY TO CALM AN ANXIOUS MIND - NOTICE WHEN YOU'REDOING OK
To protect us from harm, our brains have evolved an ongoing focus on
the negative - they're constantly scanning for things that may hurt us.
In this article for Ideas.TED.Com, Dr Rick Hanson and colleagues explain
how, by noticing several times a day that we're OK, we are building our
wellbeing.
At the bottom of the article there is also a link to Hanson's fascinating
TED Talk 'Hardwiring Happiness', in which he explains how by focusing on
good experiences, it can help us overcome negative ones.

8 WAYS TO GIVE YOUR MIND A DEEP CLEANING
If you're feeling stressed, stuck or over-whelmed, clearing out the
backlog of thoughts in your mind can help.
In this insightful article for Healthline, Crystal Raypole talks us through 8
ways in which we can press the mental re-boot button.

WHY LISTENING TO SAD MUSICHELPS
It helps us understand our feelings and
put words to them
It triggers nostalgic memories
It releases dopamine and improves
mood
It makes us reflect on our own
experiences and feel comforted
It gives a healthy outlet for our
emotions
BREAD THERAPY
Did you know that baking our own bread, as
well as giving us something delicious to
enjoy, is a form of mindful meditation which
helps to soothe and ground us ?
Ten or fifteen minutes of kneading the dough
slows us down and provides an opportunity
to focus on that one thing we're doing.
When next preparing a loaf, to make the
most of this mindful moment, notice the
movement of your hands, how the dough
feels, sounds, looks and smells.
No wonder Paul Hollywood seems so chilled!
TIPS TO POWER THROUGH YOUR 'TO DO' LIST
Focus on one thing at a time
Do the thing you don't want to do first
Plan a small reward for after you've done the task
Set a timer - I always work better to a deadline!

THE THURSDAY MURDER CLUBBY RICHARD OSMAN
I loved Richard Osman's writing style -
simple, smart and very funny.
Set in a peaceful retirement village, four
friends meet up once a week to investigate
unsolved murders.
When someone close to home is murdered
they find themselves at the heart of
solving a live case !
I can understand why the rights have been
snapped up by Steven Speilberg and it is
being adapted into a film.

THE WILD SILENCEBY RAYNOR WINN
This is the follow up to Raynor Winn's
incredible book 'The Salt Path', which you
definitely need to read first !
We catch up with Raynor and her terminally
ill husband Moth, after their 630mile
homeless walk along the South West Coastal
Path - which is the subject of The Salt Path.
Like The Salt Path, it is beautifully written,
as a story of hope triumphing over despair
and of the human spirit's instinctive
connection to nature, and how it is vital for
us all.

BOOKSHELF FAVOURITES
I'm working my way through my pile of new books from Christmas and
have the following two recommendations for you. I've loved reading
both of them.
#BETHECHANGE
Here is some information and some ideas on how we can support our
health and well-being and that of our communities and our planet !
Every Mind MattersIf you haven't yet visited the NHS 'Every Mind Matters' website I can
highly recommend it. It provides a range a practical resources to help
us support our mental health and that of others, including a quiz that
generates a personalised 'Mind Plan'. There are also links to enable you
to self-refer for talking therapies and to get urgent support if you feel
unable to cope. Click here to find out more.
Love Your ClothesWith more time spent at home at the moment I'm sure you, like me, are
planning a bit of wardrobe clear out. There's a great website called
'Love Your Clothes' which offers great tips on how to love, look after
and recycle your clothes to reduce the impact of clothes on the
enviroment.
The Doctor's Kitchen 3-2-1As you'll know from earlier issues of Thrive, I'm a big fan of Dr Rupy
Anju's The Doctor's Kitchen. Dr Rupy is on a mission to help us eat
ourselves well. His latest book is out now - The Doctor's Kitchen 3-2-
1, in which all the recipes are based on 3 fruit and veg, 2 servings and
1 pan. Click here to visit The Doctor's Kitchen website for details of Dr
Rupy's books and podcasts. If you subscribe to his weekly email you get
free recipes each week, as well as the details of the latest podcasts.
Silica Gel PouchesI always feel guilty throwing away the little silica gel packs that come
with a lot of new products. Now I pop them in my jewellery box to help
keep the silver from tarnishing !
That's it for this month's edition !
