manuKau harBour
The Manukau Harbour is to the southwest o the Auckland isthmus, and opens out into the Tasman Sea.Maori traditions o the Great Migration tell o the canoe Tainui being hauled across the Tamaki isthmusto become the rst o the great canoes to reach the Manukau. The aniety o Hoturoa, Te-Manuka-O-Hoturoa, as he steered Tainui towards the breakers at the harbour entrance, has been suggested asthe origin o the name Manuka, rst applied to the heads, then etended to cover the harbour, andsince corrupted to Manukau. Other suggested derivations include bathing place or sea birds (manu, bird, kau, a swim), place o the wading birds, nothing but birds, and a corruption o the nameo the ubiuitous scrubland plant, manuka.

concludinG commentary
In this section we have highlighted that Auckland is a growingcity with an additional 500,000 people due to arrive by 2030. Theincrease in population will place signicant pressure on our currentharbour assets and we need to plan or the uture use o the threeharbours. Planning will have substantial benets that will addressknowledge and data gaps, manage tensions between competinguses, and set priority objectives across all three harbours.

The epansion plans are highly controversial and the division o views across Auckland is wellrepresented within the Committees own membership. However, there is consensus that there shouldbe no urther majorreclamation o the harbour or the container port. Major reclamation will lead to asignicant narrowing o the harbour, the impact o which will be elt across a range o commercial andrecreational sectors.

Boat BuildinG and marine retailinGThe boat building and marine supplies industry is one o New Zealands largest manuacturing sectors, accounting or 10% o the countrys manuactured goods. It is estimated to generate about $1.7 billiona year, with eports accounting or about $650 million o that gure. Aucklands share is approimately64% or $1.08 billion. The high New Zealand dollar, global nancial crisis and subseuent worldwidedeleveraging has resulted in a slight revenue decline or the sector since 2008 (Auckland: $1.22 billion;nationally: $1.9 billion). But the past two years have seen a recovery, reports the New Zealand MarineIndustry Association, and the new marine industry precinct in Aucklands northwest is set to deliverurther real benets to the boat building sector when complete.

tidal enerGyTidal energy converts the renewable energy o tides into useul orms o power. Tidal energy may haveadvantages over other sustainable sources because the timing and scale o tidal fows is predictableand underwater turbines are invisible and silent. While the economic costs remain a hurdle, thetechnology represents a signicant opportunity in an undeveloped area o alternative energy sources.

recommendation three: aucKland councilto commence with urGency the second
staGe oF the unisa studyThe Ports o Aucklands epansion plans are highly controversial. The Committee believes there shouldbe no urther majorreclamation o the harbour or the container port. Major reclamation will lead to asignicant narrowing o the harbour, the impact o which will be elt across a range o commercial andrecreational sectors.
