WHAT IS THE COMPETITION?
Present your research and its significance to non-specialists in
3 minutes and with only 1 PowerPoint slide.
WHY PARTICIPATE?
3MT is a prestigious national competition, which is recognised
and valued. Participating marks you out as
enterprising and engaging - a valuable addition to your
CV. It also helps you to:
• Prepare for your transfer/viva examination
• Ensure you have fully grasped the basics of your research
• Develop the necessary academic communication skills
You will receive individual written feedback on your
presentation from academic colleagues on the judgingpanel. We can
film you to help you review and improve your presentation
skills.
ELIGIBILITY
3MT is open to PGRs who are on route to a PhD (who will not have
had their viva by June 10). Previous
entrants from last year’s competition are very welcome to
participate again.
SUPPORT AND TRAINING
If you are interested in attending a ‘Effectively Communicating
your Research to Any Audience’workshop please email Christine Smith
[email protected].
There will also be support for heat winners in preparation for
the university final. The University winner will
be offered individual 1:1 coaching in preparation for the
regional competition.
COMPETITION PROCESS / KEY DATES
There are three heats: Register at tinyurl.com/mmu3mt
• CHESHIRE 12th May 1.30-3.00pm - Register by
10th May
• MANCHESTER 16th May 1.30-3.00pm –
Register by 13th May
• MANCHESTER 17th May 1.30-3.00pm –
Register by 13th May
Heat winners will present at the University final on June
6th 12.00-2.00pm.
The University finalist will represent Manchester Met at the
online regionals in July and regional winnerswill go through to the
UK live national final in September.
COMPETITION RULES
• A single static PowerPoint slide with no animations or
'movement' of any description.
• Presentations are to be spoken word only, with no additional
electronic media or props
• Presentations are limited to 3 minutes and competitors
exceeding will be disqualified.

COMPETITION PRIZES
• Heat winners - £50 Amazon voucher
•Institutional winner £500 for public engagement/impact
activities (e.g. presenting at a conference)
• Institutional runner up £150 for public engagement/impact
