INTRODUCTION Daniel Madison From day 1, I’ve always wanted to collaborate with the genius mind that is R3man, the one who has stood right beside me from day one to catch me when I’ve fallen and to keep me grounded when I’ve been given the opportunity to fly. For collaboration between R3man and I, timing is everything, and this evening, of the 4th of April 2008, as we celebrate lost anniversaries, time is on our side, and the effects and ploys we have moulded together have met under a dark cloud to bounce from one to another as a madman would battle his own self made enemy. We sit here deciding what to give away, and what to keep just for ourselves, and proud parents we are to the content of this document, the thoughts of two minds as one, for your learning, intrigue and more importantly… inspiration. It’s an honour to work with D through this document, as it always has been with D’s previous entries. Herein you will find a series of effects and ideas cut down from our original list of over 40 ideas, not that we wish to use those leftovers for a sequel, but more as an example of our means to offer you nothing from the bottom of the devils barrel. It was in 2004 when Daniel offered an account that summarised our working relationships, a lyric that justifies my ambitions and at the same time offers an example of D’s nature as an artist and a gentleman. We are two different personalities of the same madman On that note, we offer you the thoughts of a team or 2 in 1. Magic is only dead without the magician Randall Freeman & Daniel Madison

COUNTING CROWS Daniel Madison This effect combines a force with a 4-card-revelation

Start with three aces on the bottom of the deck and one on top

You will now need to perform the Raining Force…

Ask the spectator to name a number between 1 and 52

Grip the deck from above with your right hand and create a break between the bottom card & the deck – image01

Now peel off a card at a time from the deck to your left hand using your left thumb – image02

If the spectator named the number 18, after you peel off the 17th card, when your left hand goes under the deck as your left thumb goes to peel the 18th card, drop the bottom card/force card (in this case an Ace) to the top of the counting packet – image03. The 18th card in the deck now lands above the force card

You can now double lift to show the force card, however, in this case…

Grip the top two cards and insert them into the corner of the upper packet as in image04 – they should be posing as one card

Once done, pull your lower hand back, as you do so, connect finger two with the bottom card of the upper packet - image05 - as it connects, move your hand away from the upper packet pulling the bottom card of the upper packet away - image06 - as it comes away you can grip it with your thumb – image07

With all cards gripped you can now hold the cards up to show 4 aces

COLT45 Daniel Madison Colt Four Five is a very visual sandwich routine which begins with 4 aces vanishing one at a time…

Start by performing Counting Crows to reveal all of the Aces, place all aces face up on the surface

Dribble the cards asking the spectator to call stop

Cut the bottom packet to the top and perform a double lift to show the selected card. Turn the double face down and lose the rag card anywhere in the deck, the actual selection will remain on top of the deck

Take the red Aces and place them on top of the deck face up

Pick up the top three cards so that the selected card is hidden behind the 2nd Ace - image09

Place the top Ace to the top of the deck before dropping the other Ace with the selection behind it on top of the decked Ace – thus sandwiching the selection between the red Aces

Take off the top Ace as you maintain a break under the selection and the now hidden face up ace

Spread the cards keeping the top two card together to hide the Ace

This will look like one of the Aces has vanished

With the other red Ace still in hand and the break maintained under the top two cards, you now need to perform the Lui Simonoff Flipment move… Hold the Ace face up on the edge - image10 - as you drop it to the deck so that it turns to land face down, catch a break of air under the break - top two cards on the deck - by pulling the deck down and away from the double causing them to turn face up. As they do so, the falling Ace needs to land on the deck, face down, underneath them… Confused dot com? Images11-13 should help. This is a difficult move but shouldn’t take too long to learn with practice

Get a break under the top three cards and add the two black Aces to the top of the deck face up, lift off the two Aces along with the three cards from the top of the deck – keep them hidden behind the 2nd Ace

Place the top Ace on top of the deck and instantly drop the other Ace with the three cards hidden behind it in top of that

Now you can take off the top Ace to show that one of the black Aces has vanished

Place the final Ace face up on top of the deck and perform a pass with about half the deck – images14-18

Now turn the deck face up and spread it to reveal the face down black Aces sandwiching the face up red Aces which sandwich the face down selection

TOKYO SMILE Daniel Madison + Randall Freeman A powerful method for changing four of a kind to another four of a kind… All in one hand

Hold the 4 Aces behind one King and grip them in your hand between your pinky, base of palm and thumb as in image19

Place the other three Kings on top keeping a pinky break – image20

You will now need to perform the R3SPREAD to display only 4 cards…

Reach over the entire packet with your thumb as you insert finger 3 and your pinky into the break – image21

Pull your thumb toward yourself as you open your fingers thus spreading the three Kings as in image22 – you can show both sides of the cards

Pull your grip back and perform a Charlier cut with the top three Kings

Now perform the Charlier cut once again with the top and last King, to prevent the first Ace from showing, push the single card away and the packet all the way over to meet your outstretched thumb as in images23-25…

Hold this pose for a few moments

Now allow the packet to fall on top of the last King, as it lands grip the entire packet and shake your hand for a few seconds, when you stop shaking, the first Ace will be revealed

Now push up the top three cards with your thumb as in image26

Push finger 3 under the top three cards as in image27 and perform the R3Spread once again

THROUGH PASS Randall Freeman This is a very simple method for controlling a card to either the top or bottom of the deck

Dribble the cards until the spectator calls stop

Push out the top card of the lower packet – the stopped at card – and grip it between fingers 2 and 3 of the upper hand – images29-31

Bring the card back to the top of the lower packet as you close the deck – image32

As you close the deck, keep your grip on the card and force it back toward yourself through the deck to hide under you hand – images33+34

You can now comfortably bring the card back to the top or the bottom of the deck under the shade of your hand before squaring up the deck

Images36-38 show the card being placed on the bottom of the deck

Images39+40 show the card being placed back on top. In which case the upper hand adds shade to the top of the deck.

BACK DROP Randall Freeman This is a Shift move used as an alternative to a multiple shift

Take the four aces and insert them into different parts of the top half of the deck leaving them all out jogged

Show that the Aces are in different parts of the deck by spreading them – images41+42

Close the spread and keep the deck face forward

As you square up the cards, get a break in front of the bottom ace – image43

As you push all of the Aces into the deck, push your thumb toward the top packet (above the break) causing it to pivot on your lower palm as in images44-45

The packet should pivot until it has freed itself from the Aces, which should now be square on top of the bottom packet

Now meet the pivoted packet with your pinky to allow the packet to balance there as you move the lower packet (topped with Aces) over the pivoted packet – image46

You can now square up the deck and the Aces will be on top

SPINAL CUT Randall Freeman Spinal cut is a nice and simple method for cutting to a selected card from a deck shuffled by the spectator. It’s very flamboyant and follows in line with the rest of the work in this book, in that the simplicity of the move is instantly bypassed with thoughts for a more intricate method.

Control the selected card to the bottom and cop it away from the deck as you hand the cards to the spectator to shuffle…

To do this, buckle the bottom card as in imgae47 and insert fingers 3 and 4 of the same hand into the gap as in imgae48. Shift the deck back – along with the buckled card – image49 - and then shift the deck forward again thus positioning the buckled card into a copped position as in image50. Now tilt the copped card away as you take the deck with our free hand as in image51. Now lower your hand to your side on a tilt as in image52

Take the deck back adding the selected card to the bottom as in images53+54

Instantly cut the deck by obtaining a kick with the top half of the deck – image55

You now need to spin your hand to turn it face up, as you do so, you will throw the top half over the back of your hand to be caught by your free hand – images55-59 show how this is done

It will now look like you have cut to the card on show – the selected card

THE FINAL CUT Randall Freeman …A mentalists approach to having a spectator freely chose their own card from a selection of four piles

Control the selected card to the bottom of the deck and place the deck on the surface

Ask the spectator to cut off any amount of cards and keep the packet, you take the lower packet

Ask the spectator to shuffle their packet as you do the same retaining the selected card at the bottom

Ask the spectator to cut their pile into three piles on the surface and shuffle each pile individually

Ask them to take any card from the middle of each packet and place it on top of the same packet without looking at it, once done with each pile ask them to do the same with the pile in your hand

Now you will need to pass the selected card from the bottom of your pile to the top – images60-63 show how to do this

Now off the spectator the choice of any pile – including the pile in your hand

If they chose the pile in you hand, give them the packet, turn over the top card of each pile to show random cards before asking them to turn over the top card of their pile for the revelation

If they chose a pile on the table, classic palm the top card/selected card of the pile in your hand as in kmages64+65 and take it to the top of their chosen pile as you move it in front of the others (toward yourself) before spreading the pile

Now reveal the top card of each pile before asking the spectator to turn over the top card of their chosen pile for the revelation

Randall Freeman + Daniel Madison THOUGHTS OF A MADMAN Concepts and effects of close up deception and illusion

THE FOUR FACES OF JOSEPH KING Randall Freeman This is an idea that displays four jokers that instantly become four Kings…

For this you will need to use a Bicycle deck so that you can use the joker in image66

Place the joker on top of the deck with the Kings on top of that so that the King of Spades is the bottom of the Kings; ie 4th from top

Lift five cards from the deck (Kings and the joker) and peel the first King off into your hand as shown in image67, once done, show the Joker at the bottom of the pile before repeating this move another two times so that you are eventually left with a double in hand and three face down Kings in the other – this will look like you are counting off four jokers

Place the double on top of the deck face up on a tilt as in image69 ready to perform The Turnover-Pass…

Pinched the double at the corner closest to you with your forefinger & middle finger on top, & your thumb underneath [a little like a snap change position on the wrong corner] Image69

Turning your hand clockwise, both cards are turned face down to the side of the deck as if they are about to be folded under the deck – which is almost what is about to happen

As you fold the cards face down the middle finger from the deck hand pulls the face card under the deck as the rag card is left in hand face down, this is shown through images70-72

This will place the joker to the bottom of the packet, you can now place the first King face down on the surface

Turn the packet face up to show the bottom joker ready to perform a glide move…

As you turn the packet face down, pull the bottom card back with fingers 2 and 3 so that you can take the next card up – another King – with your free hand – image73. You can now place this King on top of the other King on the surface, it will now appear that there are two jokers on the table and two in hand

Page 12: THOUGHTS OF A MADMAN - Emperybooks...Daniel Madison From day 1, I’ve always wanted to collaborate with the genius mind that is R3man, the one who has stood right beside me from day

Peel off the top card as you turn the bottom two cards face up as one card – images74+75

Turn the double back face down on top and take off the top card – another King – adding it to the surfaced pile

Now add the double in hand – posing as one card – to the top of the surfaced pile, collect all the cards and turn over the top card to reveal the last joker

Square up the packet, with the joker still face up and point out that the joker on the bike is actually the King of Spades, holding the cards at opposite corners, as you move the cards closer to the spectator so that they can get a closer look, flip the cards face up as in images76-78 to reveal the actual King of Spades

You can now count off the top three Kings maintaining the last two cards as one to display all of the Kings

BASIC Daniel Madison This is a sandwich effect that happens all in one hand…

Start with a pair on top, one face up covered by the other face down

Control the selected card under the top two cards by performing a tilt with the top two cards – images79+80 – from the front the card will appear to be inserted into the back of the deck halfway down

Perform the basic intro to Popsyble from Lethal…

Get a Z cut as in image81

Allow the bottom packet to fall into your hand – image82

Tilt the top packet clockwise 45 degrees – image83

Reach over to the top card with finger 2 of the lower hand – image84

Peel off the top card as in image85 clipping it between fingers 2 and 3

Close the deck trapping the clipped card inside as in image86 thus revealing a pair

79: 80: 81: 82:

83: 84: 85 86:

Now place the pair face up on top of the deck, the rest of the trick is performer with one hand

Lift up the top three cards from the inner edge as in image87

With finger 1, break off the bottom two cards - image88

The two lower cards will be gripped between the thumb and finger 1

Extend fingers 2, 3 and 4 so that the top card of the pair is extended away from the top two gripped cards – image89

Work the extended cards under the gripped double to the top of the deck – images89+90

Now drop the gripped double to the top of the deck – the selected card will now be sandwiched

Page 14: THOUGHTS OF A MADMAN - Emperybooks...Daniel Madison From day 1, I’ve always wanted to collaborate with the genius mind that is R3man, the one who has stood right beside me from day

Lift up the top three cards with your thumb as before and perform a one handed revolution until the point as shown in image91

When you get to this stage, grip the three cards between fingers 2 and 4 as in image92

Allow the deck to lean back on the thumb and use finger 1 to open the deck as in image93

Use finger 2 to push the three out-held cards into the open deck and allow the deck to close trapping the three cards out jogged – toward yourself

Now simply fan the deck to spread the cards thus revealing the sandwiched card – image94

Alternatively, perform the TG Murphy deck flip or use Dan and Dave’s Carahan fan (image95) so that the pair opens in the fan revealing the sandwiched card

SERAPHAN Daniel Madison A very clean one-handed-cut of a fanned deck

Perform a normal fan or a pressure fan – image96

Reach over with finger 1 and grip the top half of the fan between fingers 1 and 2

Extend fingers 1 and 2 causing the fan to break into two fans – image97 Close the lower fan in one hand as in image98 as you close the top half of the fan with your free hand over the

deck

JIGSAW Daniel Madison A powerful revelation through which a torn corner momentarily becomes the corner of the selected card

Tear the corner of the force card but do not detach it – image99 – and force it using The Emotion Force…

The bottom two thirds of the deck is cut above the force card & a break is made with the use of an out-jogged bottom card – image100

The out-jogged card – in place above the force card – causes a break or a stop when the deck is thumb-riffled – image101

Riffle the deck asking the spectator to call stop at any point

As you riffle, the out-jogged card will cause a natural & instant stop at the force card. This is all about timing, no matter when the spectator calls stop you need to aim at stopping at the break

Once the stop is made, reach over with your free hand pushing the out-jogged card in & lifting the packet above the break at the same time – image102

If you happen to make the stop too soon or too late, the force can still be achieved. Simply push in the out-jogged card & lift the top two thirds above the force card letting go of the thumb break at the same time. Doing this whilst rotating the body & arms slightly to the right will shade the break-change, once the deck is cut no questions will be asked – image103

99: 100: 101: 102:

103: 104: 105: 106:

When you cut the deck, tilt the lower packet toward yourself to hide the tear as you push the selected/forced card out for the spectator to see – image104

As you display the card, grip the torn corner with your thumb and tear it from the card by pulling on the card with the other hand as you take the card into the other packet – image105

Keep the corner on top of the lower packet as you work the now torn force card into the upper packet as exposed in image106

Continued…

Page 17: THOUGHTS OF A MADMAN - Emperybooks...Daniel Madison From day 1, I’ve always wanted to collaborate with the genius mind that is R3man, the one who has stood right beside me from day

Cut the lower packet to the top and take the top card away with the corner still hidden behind it – image107

Hand the deck to the spectator

Tear the corner of the top card up until the last thread as in image108

As you do this, position the force card corner as in image109

107: 108: 109: 110:

112: 113: 114: 115:

As you turn the card face down, finger 1 folds the actual corner under the card as the thumb moves the force corner into the position of the original tare as shown through images110-113 – the corner in image113 is the force corner

Ask the spectator to finish tearing off the corner; you will need to hold the corner quite tightly so that when it is taken by the spectator it will feel like it is being detached from the card

Hold the card face up as in image116 and ask the spectator to place the corner on the card

Ask the spectator to name their selected card

Slowly turn over the corner to reveal their card

Now reach under the card and break off the corner with your thumb

As you turn the card face down, hold the force corner in place with finger 2 as you pull the hidden corner into your free hand with your thumb as in images117

Hand the corner to the spectator and ask them to look for their card in the deck, they will find the torn card along with the actual corner held in their hand

A BOX FOR 51 Randall Freeman …A method for vanishing a card that appears face up in a boxed face down deck

Spread the cards face up and ask a spectator to name one

Cut the deck at this card and lift it off the bottom of the deck with one card behind it so that you have a double

Holding the deck in the same hand, replace all the cards to the box, except the double – image118

Turn the double face down and align with the deck overlapping the box, lift the double and allow the bottom/face card to pop away from the card behind it – image119

Work the face card into the deck so that it is between the cards, do this as you realign the double on the back of the box – image120

118: 119: 120:

As the card gets halfway stop and momentarily show the face of the card before instantly turning it back face down, this will simply look like the selected card is overlapping the box on the outside

When you turn the deck face down, square the cards in with the box so that you push the selected card entirely into the box and the backer onto the back of the box

Place the box on the table and take the rag card making sure you keep it face down

Now you will need to vanish the card using Madisons’ take on the one hand palm vanish…

Hold the card in gamblers grip – image121

Hold your other palm over the card – image122

Fake palming the card out of the hand as you tilt the lower hand to the side with the card secretly copped in it – image123

Now take your face down hand away faking the palm and gently shake your hand as you open your fingers to reveal a vanish

You can now wash your hands to show that the card has gone, or you can pick the box up right away hiding the copped card behind it as you take out the cards for the revelation

Randall Freeman + Daniel Madison THOUGHTS OF A MADMAN Concepts and effects of close up deception and illusion

RE-SANDWICH Daniel Madison This is one hell of a sandwich routine and will take some time to learn for sure. Don’t give up on it, by the time you get it you won’t be able to resist performing it. The idea for the effect was built around the common lapse of memory that allows an average mind to openly accept two differences as one and the same. In this instance we see the 7D and the 7H playing the same character, as does the 6H and 6D. STAGE01

Place the 7H and 6D at the bottom of the deck, both face up

Place the 7D and 6H on top of the deck face down

False shuffle before having a card freely selected and signed, as the ink dries, take off the top two cards, showing them face up for a moment…

I’m going to use the top two cards as locator, or rather, sandwich cards, which I will use to find, or rather, catch your card in the deck

Don’t mention the suits, just state that you will use the red 6 and red 7 before placing them on the surface face down

Cut the deck and throw the bottom half to the top so that the bottom two cards are left in-jogged as in image124

Push all cards in other than the very bottom (previous bottom) this will be either a face up 6 or 7

Take the signed card and press it down on the protruding card at the back to create a gap in the deck between the two face up cards – image125

Push the selected card the entire way to the top to display it in the deck

You can now square up the entire deck

Take the tabled 7D and 6H and place them both face up on top of the deck

Now get a pinky break under the 4th card and take them away from the deck, as you do so, keep a grip on the top card with your deck-hand-thumb thus peeling it back to the deck as in image126

124: 125: 126:

You now have three cards in your free hand posing as only one

Place this deck directly on the bottom of the deck, or rather, place the deck on top of it. It will appear that you have a face down deck between the face up 6 and 7

You now need to vanish the top card by covering it up with the bottom card, a simple one-card-pass will suffice but I would like to stake this opportunity to teach the PINCH PASS…

Reaching under the inner corner of the deck as in image127, your thumb connects with the index of the bottom card and grips, or pinches it, in the thumb crotch

Pull your hand back with the bottom card until it clears the deck and pops into something of a palm, don’t worry about this looking messy, it’ll only be held there for a moment

Now push your hand back over the deck and drop the card squaring it up as you move your hand away

This will appear to vanish not only the top card but also the bottom and is shown through images127-130. You will need to do this as you stand with your spectator to your left…

Page 20: THOUGHTS OF A MADMAN - Emperybooks...Daniel Madison From day 1, I’ve always wanted to collaborate with the genius mind that is R3man, the one who has stood right beside me from day

127: 128: 129: 130:

Turn the deck over to show that the bottom card has gone also

Now turn the deck back face down and spread through the deck to find the selected card sandwiched between the 7H and 6D – careful not to flash the face up card near the top of the deck

As soon as you get to three cards, take them out and turn them face up as you place them on the surface

Cut the deck, as you do so, retain the bottom card so that it stays at the bottom of the deck, this isn’t an important card but it does need to be moved out of the way of the bottom face-up card as you cut the deck. Images131+132 show how to do this with ease

131: 132:

As you bring the bottom packet down to the top, use your thumb to slip back the top card from the deck, whilst at the same time setting the packet down overlapping the bottom packet so that you are left with a deck that looks like image133

Now peel off about 10 cards from the top of the deck with your thumb and pull the packet back and away from the deck along with the middle out jogged card – image134 - drop this packet to the top or cut it to the bottom

You should now be exposing a face up card at the top of the bottom packet as out lapped at the back

Take the signed card once more and insert it once again into the overlapping gap above the face up card as in image135

At this point you can repeat the effect or finish with stage02…

STAGE02

Take the 7 and the 6 from the table and place them face up on top of the deck

Pick up the top three cards and peel off the top card with your deck-hand-thumb as you take out the two cards below it posing as only one card, instantly drop these two cards back to the top of the deck

Snap your fingers above the deck and take away the top card to show that one of them has vanished

Drop the card back to the top of the deck and perform the PINCH PASS again to vanish the top card

Now spread through the deck to reveal the selected card sandwiched once more between the 7 and 6 – and careful not to flash the face up cards near the top of the deck

Now Charlier cut the deck placing the face up 6 and 7 in side the deck with a random card sandwiched between

Take the 6 and 7 from the surface, still with the selected card sandwiched between them and place them on top of the deck – sandwich cards facing up

Take the three cards back, this time take an extra card so that underneath the thee card sandwich you have a face down random card

Now, with the four cards square, throw them to the deck causing them to flip over so that they reveal the random card as they hit the deck – images136-141

Take the random card from the deck and get a break under the top two cards

You can now spread the top few cards – keeping the top two cards held together as on, this will look like the sandwich and selected card has vanished

Spread the deck to show the other 6 and 7 in the middle of the deck, take them out and place them on the table - sandwich cards face up - the sandwiched card will be a random card

Now get a break under the top four cards and pull the deck over the top of the cards face up as in images143-145

Now cut the deck placing the original sandwich in the centre of the deck

Take the 6 and 7 from the table asking the spectator to turn over the card

As they do so and realise it’s not their card, place the 6 and 7 in hand to the bottom of the face-up deck and instantly spread the cards on the surface tom show for one last time the selected card, in the centre of the deck sandwiched between the 6 and 7. You will now be left clean and halfway there to an instant reset

And breath
