MOST HOLY TRINITY PAGE 1 JUNE 16, 2019 Thoughts from Fr. Scott Best wishes to all our dads on this Father’s Day. It is wonderful to see good men being honored for giving witness to fatherhood in our world. My own dad provided an extraordinary witness of fatherhood. My dad died about four years ago, so this day is somewhat melancholy for me. Still, it is a joyful day to celebrate all our dads and their wonderful ways. Obviously, a good father stands in representation of our Heavenly Father and shows his children how to love unconditionally. Hopefully, all fathers will give this witness to their children and the world. This is a most fitting example as we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity today. So, to all our dads: have a wonderful, relaxing and joyful Father’s Day! Last week we bid a very fond farewell to Mrs. Cindy Webster as she retired. Cindy served our community for 31 years and will be greatly missed. I thank her on behalf of our entire community as she dedicated her life to our parish family helping us to grow in faith, hope and charity. In many ways, Cindy was our mother and the conscience of our staff. Certainly, she showed us how to love God and to serve Him by serving His people most especially the poor and vulnerable. Thank you hardly seems enough to say as her dedication to our community has born great fruit in the vineyard of the Lord. God Bless you Cindy and your family. Enjoy every moment of your life and thank you very much for your service to God’s people and most especially to our parish family. Cindy, I pray that God Blesses you abundantly every day! I am also happy to announce Mrs. Artha Horowitz will become our Pastoral minister for Christian service. Artha was our Director of Religious Formation and asked to move into the position vacated by Cindy’s retirement. I am very pleased with this move. She will do a wonderful job directing our Christian Service department and building upon the very strong foundation already present. Ms. Jean Hartman will be joining our staff as the new Director of Religious Formation on July 1 st . Jean is an experienced Catholic pastoral minister and has served as DRE for a number of years at different parishes. She brings a wealth of talent, vision and knowledge to our parish family and will serve our youth very well. She will be a great addition to our pastoral staff. I am very excited about our entire staff and I have great confidence in our talents and vision as we serve this great Laker community. It will a great year of spiritual growth for all in our parish family. Hopefully, everyone will take some downtime this summer. Summer is a wonderful opportunity for us to gather our thoughts and to take a break from the daily grind. Please do not forget to pray and reflect during these months. It is vital to remain close to the Lord at all times. Our church is open daily for prayer and reflection and I highly encourage everyone to make use of it for daily visits. This is one way for us to calm ourselves amidst the daily grind and all the stresses life can bring. So, enjoy the summer and please remember it is a good idea to relax and recharge but also necessary to remain prayerful and close to the Heart of Our Savior. This weekend we move back into “ordinary time” by celebrating the feast of The Most Holy Trinity. This feast is most important for us. Too often these days we have a lack of understanding about the Trinity. Clearly, this revealed mystery is complex and often difficult to comprehend. Yet, God reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Spirit. This revelation is the Truth and allows us to more intimately identify with the Godhead. The Holy Trinity desires to be an active part of our lives and we need to respond by allowing this Trinitarian Love to take hold of us and bring us into union with Him. So, let us revel in this mystery and celebrate our lives in Trinitarian Love. God Bless and have a great week! Fr. FR. CHRISTOPHER’S

CONTEMPLATION

Happy Sunday,

A few years ago when I was ordained a Deacon, the first Sunday homily I preached in the parish was Trinity Sunday (this weekend). I remember thinking, “Oh thanks Father, for my first homily this is the one feast I get to start with.” He said that he had to do it as a Deacon and so I should do it as well. I just kept thinking, “we had an entire semester long class on the Trinity and I am supposed to find some way to condense the great mystery of the Trinity into one short homily.” Impossible!

It is impossible for us to completely grasp and understand the complexity of the mystery of the Trinity. That is why we call it a mystery of faith. However, we can come to know who the Trinity is. The Trinity consists of one God in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They are three distinct persons, though they are co-eternal(all eternal) and consubstantial (of the same substance). They are Father, Son and Holy Spirit; the creator, redeemer and sanctifier.

When I was younger, in my prayer, I only remember praying to God. I did not have any concept of God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and therefore I did not pray to them individually. As I have grown in my spiritual life, my relationship with the Trinity has changed. I have come to know and appreciate them as unique individual persons. As we relate to our parents, grandparents, friends and siblings, so too with the Trinity.

In my prayer, there are times when I find myself drawn to one of the members of the Trinity over the others. God the Father is our creator and protector. Like a child who seeks comfort in their parents arms, a safe place of protection, guidance and love, the Father desires us to relate to Him as a child to their parents. God the Son, Jesus, calls us as His brothers and sisters. He guides us as a brother, as our redeemer and has paved the way for us to the Father. Jesus, who is fully God and fully man, knows what it is like to go through the difficulties of life: pain, suffering, anguish, and betrayal. He also knows the joys of faith, friendship, and love. Jesus in His humanity is relatable to us and can bring us comfort in our humanity. The Holy Spirit, the third member of the Trinity, for many people is the most difficult to relate to. The Holy Spirit has been given to each of us in our Baptism and Confirmation and is our sanctifier and guide. He is also our advocate and has given to each of us in Confirmation the gifts of the Spirit to strengthen us on the journey of faith.

God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, the Most Blessed Trinity, strive each and everyday to draw us ever closer to them. They desire to accompany us through life and to bestow upon us their grace. I encourage each of us to be mindful to build a relationship with each member of the Trinity. To seek them as individuals in our prayers with our particular needs, concerns and to offer thanksgiving.

EUCHARISTIC DAY

"A holy hour is an exercise of love, not a project to be accomplished.” Fr. Benedict Groeschel points out in his book, In the Presence of Our Lord: The History, Theology, and Psychology of Eucharistic Devotion, that there are “four kinds of prayer most appropriate in the presence of the Eucharist, namely adoration and praise, thanksgiving, repentance, trusting and intercession.”

Our Eucharistic Day takes place on the 3rd Tuesday of each month starting about 9:00am and continuing until Rosary and Benediction at 7:00pm. Our next Eucharistic Day is Tuesday, June 18th.

We need your commitment to spend a specific hour each 3rd Tuesday in Adoration. Suggested times are 10:00-11:00, 10:30-11:30, 11:00-12:00, 11:30-12:30, 12:00 to 1:00, etc. Please schedule your time by using Signup Genius at: tinyurl.com/OLLexposition or call Pat Allsteadt at 248-623-7880.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST

Join us for a delicious breakfast on June 16th in St. Joseph's Hall following the 8 and 9:30am Masses only.

The K of C will serve scrambled eggs, sausage links, bacon, hash browns, French toast, pancakes, baked omelet cups, fruit salad, and ...

In honor of all fathers, we will also serve a delicious roasted prime rib with horseradish sauce!

All proceeds support Mother and Unborn Baby Care (MAUBC).

When we feel that we have been blessed by the Holy Spirit in our speech, in our interactions with others or an overwhelming sense of peace and God’s presence, let us thank Him. When we need the father's love or reassurance, let us seek Him and when we feel sad, betrayed, or abandoned, let us turn to Jesus who knows how we feel. As we travel through our daily lives, let us be mindful to call upon the Trinity who awaits us in our prayers and desires a personal relationship with each of us.

PAPER RETRIEVER

Our Paper Retriever receptacle has moved. It is now located on the left side of the school near the field.

TUITION ANGELS

We are looking for “Tuition Angels” for the 2019-2020 school year. As we all know, the economic situation in our community has been difficult for many of our school families. We

have families who currently send their children to Our Lady of the Lakes School, and make financial sacrifices to continue to do so, but need a helping hand. Can you help? Would you consider being a “Tuition Angel” this year? If so, please send your donation to the Parish Office or place it in the collection basket marked “Tuition Angels.” Any amount would be greatly appreciated!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We are in need of volunteers to take communion to the homebound. We have one parishioner that lives in the Waterford area that needs to have communion brought to their home.

We are also in need of a volunteer to make welcome phone calls to new parish members. We call new parishioners to welcome them to the parish and ask them if they have any questions or needs regarding our parish.

Please contact Artha Horowitz at 248-623-0274 or [email protected]

PRAYER SHAWLS

Do you have a family member or a friend that could use the grace of a prayer shawl? We have a supply of prayer shawls at the parish center that can be given to a family member in need of prayers. We supply the shawls with prayers to those suffering from grief, illness or other life situations that can be helped with the comfort of knowing others are praying for them. Please contact Artha Horowitz at 248-623-0274 or [email protected] if you need a prayer shawl.

WHEELCHAIRS NEEDED

We keep a small supply of wheelchairs at the parish center to be borrowed by parishioners when needed. At this time we are out. If you have a wheelchair that you can donate to us please bring it to the Parish Center office.

CHRISTIAN SERVICE

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

APRIL UPDATE

During the month of April, Our Lady of the Lakes St. Vincent de Paul wrote checks totaling $6,153.31 and made deposits of $7,113.30. We made 43 phone calls, had 6 interviews in the Parish Center, made 5 home visits and helped over 75 people. We were able to help a parishioner that lost their job after 25 years and had a hard time finding employment because of her age. She has her special needs brother living with her and needed help because her house was in foreclosure. When you make a donation to St. Vincent de Paul these are the kinds of situations that you are helping with. Thank you to our parish family for your continued support.

We could not help those in need without you.

ELECTRONIC GIVING

If you wish to make your Sunday contribution electronically:

If your bank offers free bill pay, we suggest you use that service.

or

Go to our website at OLLonline.org and click on “Parish” then “Online Giving” or go directly to woll.weshareonline.org.

Either method allows you to choose the frequency: one-time, weekly, monthly, or annually.

If you are contributing electronically and no longer wish to receive envelopes, please let us know. Call Karen at 248-623-0274 or [email protected].

LIFE REMODELED

2019 CLEAN UP/FIX UP PROJECT

For the last several years the students from our school have joined thousands of volunteers throughout metro Detroit to clean up blighted neighborhoods. This year the hope is that members of our parish will join them on Thursday, August 8th from 9:00am – 1:00pm in this effort. Volunteers must be at least 14 years of age and it is a great opportunity for all of our college students to join us before you head back to school. The goal is to clean up a neighborhood, haul trash and recycle hundreds of discarded tires, bottles and cans. Abandoned buildings will be boarded up and substantial underbrush and weeds will be cut to improve the safety of the neighborhood in the Boston Edison area. Please contact Artha Horowitz at 248-623-0274 to sign up.

PRIESTLY VOCATIONS

“Cultivating the Call,” a regional vocation gathering, will

be held at St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores on

Thursday, June 13.

This night of prayer, testimony, and inspiration is for

those who work closest with the Church’s future vocations

as well as anyone who encounters potential vocations in

their personal or ministerial lives.

Your CSA gifts ensure the Office of Priestly Vocations

is able to promote vocations through opportunities for

understanding and discerning the Lord’s call. The office

hosts discernment overnights and weekends at Sacred

Heart Major Seminary as well as discernment days for

junior high and high school students and these regional

gatherings. It also provides outreach to parishes and

schools and vocations literature, brochures, and prayer

cards.

RIGHT TO LIFE-LIFESPAN

PROLIFE LEGISLATION

Several states have recently passed laws limiting liberal laws on abortion. Some states are more restrictive than others. The hope is that one or more of these laws will be challenged and become an issue for the United States Supreme Court to decide, perhaps overturning Roe v Wade. Obviously, those who support abortion are outraged but one of the most chilling responses comes from Alabama State Representative John Rogers who said of the Alabama law, “It ought to be a woman’s choice…some kids are unwanted. So you kill them now or you kill them later. You bring them into the world unwanted, unloved, then you send them to the electric chair.” Such utter disregard for the value of a human life is difficult to understand.

Some of the activities that are awaiting the camper’s arrival include a new High and Low Ropes course, numerous sports such as football, basketball, floor hockey, soccer, ultimate frisbee, team handball and Chicago style softball. There are water front activities such as canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing. Also camping activities such as, outdoor cooking, wilderness survival, back packing and nature and wild life awareness. Other activities include, arts and crafts, adventure games like Live Action Role Playing (larping), and team building initiatives. We offer boy and girl camps as well as family camps.

The camp’s mission is to live the Gospel and to practice the Golden Rule. From this camp experience you have the opportunity to come to know the Lord more closely. You also, have a great opportunity to meet many new people and of course have fun.

Yours in Christ, Michael S. Hickey, Executive Director

HOST FAMILIES WANTED

As Our Lady of the Lakes continues with our

international student program, we are looking for high

school host families for the 2019/2020 school year.

Each host family receives a generous monthly stipend

while students pay tuition and ALL personal expenses.

All students return home for our summer break. (Most

travel home for Christmas vacation as well). This is a

WIN-WIN for you and your family!

While recently traveling to schools in China, I

personally interviewed most of our newly accepted

students and was excited and pleased with their English

ability, their outgoing personalities, and their eagerness

to attend OLL and live with an American family. These,

by far, were my best interviews!

This opportunity not only helps you but also helps

diversify the cultural base of our school, giving our

students a broader perspective of life in other cultures.

Please consider this great opportunity and feel free

to contact me with all your questions and concerns.

Director of International Admissions

National Catholic Youth Conference

DONATIONS NEEDED

Students from Our Lady of the Lakes are planning to attend the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC). The conference is held in Indianapolis, Indiana at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 21-24, 2019. This is an exciting, biannual four-day experience of prayer, community, and empowerment for catholic teenagers and adult chaperones. The schedule includes general sessions addressing a wide variety of topics including forgiveness, Catholic spirituality and prayer, global issues, sexuality, and leadership. NCYC invites participants to encounter Christ, experience church and be empowered for discipleship.

The cost for the conference is $465 per student. If you would like to make a donation of any amount for the NCYC Conference, make the check out to OLL and place it in an envelope for Kathy Lewis. Many of our students hope to attend but cannot financially afford it without assistance. Also, keep us in prayer as we prepare for NCYC. We are hoping to join 25,000 teens who will attend this year.

Blessings in Abundance, Kathy Lewis, Campus Minister
