Catherine is listed in Trade Directories as the Innkeeperat “White Swan Hotel” in Blyth and as a ship owner. HerBrother, James Wilkie was listed as a Ship Owner and asa Tailor. Her son James was listed as a ship owner and amaster mariner, as was her nephew Archibald Wilkie.
Her newly wed daughter, husband and child were livingwith her at “The White Swan” in 1841.
In 1851 she had her daughter Ellen with her and hergranddaughter, Jane Stafford, her daughter Margaret’schild.
She was 75 in1861and was stillliving at the “TheWhite Swan” andher son in law anddaughter were nowrunning the hotel.

In 1795, all areas of England were asked to put men intothe navy to counter the threat of the French. Each area hada quota to fill and so paid men to join. Jasper was 19 and ashoemaker in Alnwick when he volunteered.
The long war against the French which began in 1793and lasted 20years, overshadowed the lives of people
who made their living from the sea.

There is a record of his burial at Horton, but only hisname and the date are given. There is no evidence of astone having been erected.

Other than entries in the family bible, very little is knownabout George. On his son, John’s christening record he isdown as a mariner, native of Eyemouth.
It is recorded inthe Bible, that helost his life on theship Europe offthe coast nearTunis, Africa.

In the 1757 Militia Act (George II) Parliamentdirected that militia regiments be re established, aftera period of dormancy, in the counties of E nglandand Wales.
It was realised from the outset that insufficientvolunteers could be persuaded to come forwardto serve in the ranks.
Accordingly, a form of conscr iption wasintroduced in which parish es would make
lists of adult males and hold ballots to choose some ofthem for compulsory service.
If the chosen men were unwilling to serve in person theywould be required to find other men to serve in their stead
