Dear Parent/Carer
Help your children with their languages lessons. Help them learn a word a day!
Many parents and carers often ask us what they could do, if wanting to support their
son/daughter’s language learning at home. One path to rapid progress is to learn vocabulary
and to learn it well. Quite simply, the more words a student knows, the better they will
understand the language, the better they will be able to write and speak the language, and the
better they will do in assessments and exams.
This year we are again providing students with a “Word a Day” document for the languages
that they study, please find this document below. We encourage parents and carers to test
students at home on the vocabulary listed for the appropriate week. These words will form
part of what is being covered in lessons and knowing the given words or phrases will help
them to do well. To be particularly effective in the long-term it is important to keep revisiting
the vocabulary sets from earlier in the year, on top of the list for the given week.
Year 11 students will notice that the words given do not necessarily reflect the vocabulary
being studied at that time in class and this is deliberate in order to promote revision of
vocabulary from other topics, hence more thorough preparation for their exams.
If the student manages a word/phrase a day for the 39 weeks of the school year that would
be 273 words learnt, or 1365 over the five years of 7-11. Knowing this many words would have
an extremely positive impact on their progress and it requires learning just one word a day.
We hope your child enjoys and succeeds in their languages lessons this academic year.
Kind regards.
Yours sincerely
Adrian Stipetic
