This Week’s Mighty Moose Winners:
A Very Special Thank You
Mr. Zach wants to extend a special thank you to our very own 3rd grader
Rachel DeVita for her outstanding demonstration of character. She displayed
excellent judgment and Mighty Moose sprit by saving the Space Launch
camp’s weather balloon from blowing away. This balloon is essential to our
launch camp and she alone saved it. The camp and I wanted to extend our
gratitude for such a great act of kindness and
collaboration.
Thank you Rachel!
Let's keep those auction items coming in!!! Be crea-

Spring Conferences are schedule for Monday, February 29th
Some parents will be contacted to schedule a conference by the classroom teacher. In the spring we conference with families to discuss students who need additional support out-side of their classroom. We also conference with individual families who may require up-dates on previous learning plans (IEP, SIT, READ Act). Please note that not all families will be contacted for a spring conference. Refer to I-Ready assessments, classroom work, etc to understand your child’s strengths and next steps.

Whole Foods Rainbow Tours
I’m excited to be able to take each of the fifth grade classes to Whole Foods this week for a Rainbow Tour. The tour will in-
clude nutrition education and food sampling. We will begin by picking a rainbow of colorful fruits and vegetables to include in
a smoothie before touring other parts of the store.
Jump Rope For Heart
I appreciate everyone who is participating in this meaningful fundraiser, at any donation level, to support children with congen-
ital heart disease. Donation envelopes are due this Friday, February 19th. If any money was collected online, please make sure
you include your child’s online donation report.

Student and School Safety
Keeping all students staff is a high priority at Southmoor.
Student Confidentiality:
We respect the privacy and confidentiality of all of our students and will not share confidential infor-mation without express permission of families and guardians.
Practicing Drills:
Fire drills– Fire drill practice occurs monthly to ensure that students and staff have multiple opportuni-ties to practice safety measures in case of an emergency.
Shelter in Place-This drill occurs one time in the school year to practice for a tornado or extreme weather. Staff and students move away from windows and doors to more secure locations.
Lock Downs-Lock downs are practiced during the year in the event of an intruder in the building. All classrooms and offices are locked with students out of sight of doors and windows.
Lock Out-Lock out is when there is a possible threat from outside of the building or possibly in the neighborhood. All exterior doors are locked and students and staff stay in the building and instruction is not interrupted.
We have worked closely with our safety department to address places in our classrooms that are not visi-ble to individuals in the halls. We had blinds added to windows and different doors placed on our break out spaces to eliminate line of sight.
We hope this information has been helpful. If you have any questions do not hesitate to call.
Thanks you,
Sarina Compoz and Karla Gruenwald
