School to Work Program (Co-op)
The School to Work Program is available to all 11th and 12th grade students. Eligible students must be
willing/able to leave school after fifth hour and not have obligations that would prevent them from
going to work every day (sports, band, and club activity). Eligible students will have reliable
transportation, the ability to work independently, and able to accept adult responsibilities including
constructive criticism and direction. Students in the School to Work Program earn an income while
gaining experience in an adult job.
Areas that paid internships are available in include but are not limited to business offices, financial
offices, medical environments including Beaumont Hospital, Chiropractic offices, dental offices,
medical offices of all types, and PT offices. CAD engineering jobs, auto field jobs, machining jobs,
welding jobs, Retirement home positions, law offices (limited) , and township offices in various
departments. These are just a few of the opportunities we have provided our students. It is our goal to
try to find each intern a career type job to experience although any students who are currently working
and receiving a payroll check (no cash payments for services can be allowed) are eligible for the
program if they meet the full qualifications of the program. In some cases, the students want to retain
their current “typical teenage job”, while enrolled in Co-Op which they can do as long as they meet the
criteria of the program as mandated by the state of Michigan.
F.A.Q. Regarding School to Work Program (Co-op)
WHO IS THE PROGRAM DESIGNED TO SERVE? Students who are interested in experiencing a
professional real world job in their career interest prior to leaving high school.
WHO IS ELGIABLE TO BE IN THE PROGRAM? (1) Students MUST have their own transportation,
as it is your responsibility to get yourself to and from work each day without the need to rely on anyone
else. (2)Students who have a good attendance record (including tardy free attendance) and (3) a strong
GPA of at least 2.5 overall average. Special consideration of these conditions are on a per student
bases.
WHO GETS THE JOBS FOR STUDENTS AND HOW DOES THAT WORK? You interview with Mrs.
Adams (the program Coordinator) and determine what area of interest you are looking to have a career
experience in if you are accepted into the program. Based on your personal data, Mrs. Adams will let
you know if she can assist you in finding a job and what classes you must take, or have had previously,
Page 5 to be prepared for the specific job opportunities. It is the student’s responsibility to get a job with Ms.
Adams assistance.
WHEN SHOULD YOU LOOK INTO THE PROGRAM AND THE OPEN JOBS? I suggest you start
talking to Mrs. Adams about next year right registration starts. Pick up an application in the CO-OP
office and return it to her office, which is located in the main office. She will give you the application
for the program, a template for the resume, and any other information she has on your specific
opportunities. Then a follow up should take place starting in May when interviews begin to take
place. She will prepare you for all interviews.
WHY SHOULD I WANT TO BE A SCHOOL TO WORK INTERN? 1) You will be able to get a
firsthand look at your potential career pathway prior to leaving high school. 2) You will meet career
professionals who can help network with you as you advance and achieve your goals. 3) You will have
a professional experience to add to your resume, which can often open doors to future employment
opportunities. 4) You can often secure a good job to keep while assisting with college expenses after
graduation. 5) Depending on your career pathway, it often helps step up your chances of getting into a
college program. 6) You can earn an income to help advance towards your own independence
financially. 7) Co-Op jobs often pay more than a “typical teenage” job will pay. 8) You leave an hour
earlier from school so you are able to have more evening time to do other things.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS, YOU CAN EMAIL: [email protected] or sign up to see her
on the Co-Op office door, she will call you down when she is available to speak to you about the
program.
