Fifth Sunday of Lent: Year C

First Reading: Isaiah 43: 16-21 The poem which is today’s First Reading talks of a new exodus and a new creation. Isaiah interprets the return from Exile in Babylon as a new exodus out of slavery and into freedom, and so it is likened to a new creation, beyond all hopes.

Second Reading: Philippians 3: 8-14 In this reading, Paul reminds the Philippian Church that it is not personal qualifications or achievements or family inheritance which count in one’s fellowship with God - all of this is “as so much rubbish”. All that counts is “knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Gospel: John 8: 1-11 Our Gospel Reading today tells the story of the encounter between Jesus and the women caught in adultery. It is an intriguing story - somewhat our of place in John’s Gospel. Even more intriguing is what Jesus may have written on the ground. We will never know. In his forgiveness of the woman, there is also an admonition from Jesus to sin no more.

‘GAUDETE ET EXSULTATE’ Rejoice and Exult

For You Too 17. At times, life presents great challenges. Through them, the Lord calls us anew to a conversion that can make his grace more evident in our lives, “in order that we may share his holiness” (Heb 12: 10). At other times, we need only find a more perfect way of doing what we are already doing: “There are inspirations that tend solely to perfect in an extraordinary way the ordinary things we do in life”. When Cardinal Francois-Xavier Nguyen van Thuan was imprisoned, he refused to waste time waiting for the day he would be set free. Instead, he chose “to live the present moment, filling it to the brim with love”. He decided: “I will seize the occasions that present themselves every day; I will accomplish ordinary actions in an extraordinary way”.

Salma featured in Project Compassion 2013. At the time she was pregnant with her first child, sick and terribly frightened. In distress, she sought the help of a midwife trained by Caritas’ Safe Motherhood Program. Six years on, she’s now a healthy mother of two strong, happy children. Salma is committed to

giving her children the education they need to provide them with the future she hoped for.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2019 and help reduce infant mortality rates in countries like Bangladesh and proved hope to pregnant women in remote communities for happy and healthy families. Lives change when we all give 100%. You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY ‘A CULTURE OF COMPASSION’

As we have been bombarded recently with the implications of the budget and a looming election, perhaps it is time to reflect on the real issues within our society. Sociologist Hugh Mackay sees our relationships as being critical for the future of the nation. ‘A culture of compassion would mean paying at least as much attention – and devoting at least as much of our public discourse – to the health of our society as to the health of our economy. In such a culture, we would think of ourselves more as citizens than consumers. We would acknowledge that people don’t thrive because they own their house, or have a new car, or take holidays overseas: they thrive because their lives have meaning and a sense of purpose; they thrive when they feel as if they are being taken seriously and their voices are being heard; they thrive when they feel loved and supported; they thrive when they feel safe; they thrive when they feel they are part of a society that recognises and includes them.

We like to acknowledge and celebrate Aussie heroes – in sport, the arts and sciences, commerce and industry. Perhaps it’s time to acknowledge the unsung heroism of all those people who are already helping to create a culture of compassion; people who are quietly devoting themselves to the wellbeing of others, especially those in their neighbourhood most at risk of social isolation; people whose lives are shaped, in the words of that great Australian, ‘Nugget’ Coombs, ‘by the thought of others’ need.’

The next meeting of the community will be held in ARMIA House on Mains Road, opposite the church on Thursday 11 th April commencing at 7.00pm. All are welcome to join the discussion.

Saturdays to the 13th April at 10.30am

"Mary's Way of the Cross" unites us to the sorrowful heart of the Mother of Jesus as she walks the torturous road to Calvary with Him. Her total surrender to God's Will reminds us to Trust and Rejoice in His salvation for us.

"Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"

“Can I get you an ice-cream?” Teens Visit to the Homeless Day Shelter. On Saturday March 23rd our teens

decided to do something they’ve never

done before. There was a bit of walking-on

-egg-shells at the start, not knowing how

to be around homeless people. After a

briefing in the guest room about it’s

foundation and operation and a touching

talk by an aboriginal elder about

transitional trauma and loneliness and

direct conversations with those affected,

the teens were actively engaging and

wanted to stay longer. Later in the train

they shared : “I know I want to do

something more, something feels different

in me”, “can we do it more often”, amongst

other highlights from the day. We also took

along lunch and donations for the day.

Getting hold of that GPS right at the peak time of first semester Uni! It’s been interesting watching the journey of the newly established young adult group, only 3 nights young. There is a lot of interest to have a space to be themselves without masks and pretention. Although numbers fluctuate depending on the

stressful uni-calendar, their camaraderie and attempt to juggle faith-uni-work is endearing. This was a topic based out of the

suggestion box on opening night, “Why and how do I read the Bible?”, They unanimously agreed that the Bible works much like a

GPS in their life, and finished off downloading the Bible app that gave them reading plans and commentary. Night well spent!
