Dear TWIF,You’ve been harping that Ohio
State needs a ‘statement’ win to end the season in its bowl game, like beating an SEC team or USC in the Rose Bowl. I disagree.
The Buckeyes just need to win a bowl game, period, so that they can feel good about themselves head-ing into the off-season. Playing the SEC or the Trojans would just make them the butt of more jokes by the national media.
This team is too average to put on the big stage again. Let’s just stay under the radar and start anew in 2009.
Ralph, Pickerington
Dear Ralph,You support like Jim Tressel
coaches – defensively.While it’s conceivable the
Buckeyes would get wiped out by USC or an SEC team, they still need to exorcise that demon.
Everyone considers this Buckeye team soft and underachieving. Only a win over the big boys will take that stigma away.
A win over North Carolina in the Orange Bowl won’t get it done. Bring on Florida, Alabama or Oklahoma. That’s the only kind of match-up I want to see.
Dear TWIF,It amazes me how arrogant
Browns fans have become! Their team is 3-6 and they talk about my Bengals like we’re the worst team on the planet. Hey, you’re only two
games ahead of us in the standings, you morons!
Here’s a prediction: When we beat Cleveland, IN CLEVELAND, on December 21, that will be the day we pass the Browns in the stand-ings. We’ll finish 6-10, while you’re headed for 5-11 or 4-12 now that the mighty Quinn has taken over!
Roy, Cincinnati
Dear Roy,I confess to not being the sharp-
est knife in the drawer, but the last thing I would do is try to defend the most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL. What are you thinking?
As a Steeler man, I’ve obviously always despised the Browns. But the fact is, they’re legit from the stand-point of having quality players and they can beat any team in the league, as evidenced by the victory over the Giants. That was no fluke.
While they’ve given a couple games away, they’ve not been an embarrassment week-in, and week-out, like Ohio’s other pro team (and I’m not referring to Ohio State). Just something to think about.
Dear TWIF,I know you follow high school
football in the Cincinnati area pretty closely. Can anyone down there, such as Colerain or Elder, hang with St. Ignatius?
John, Cleveland
Dear John,Both Elder and Colerain can play
with Ignatius, but I give the nod to Iggy because they took down what I was convinced was the state’s best team, Cleveland Glenville, last week-end.
Caution: The road to Iggy in the state finals will likely have to include a win over Pickerington Central. The Tigers are the real deal, and give Central Ohio a legitimate, albeit rare, shot of claiming a state title.

ACC

powerade previewS
OPiNiON there’s often a fine line between a winning and losing record, and these teams serve proof. amaz-ingly, one of them may very well win the acc and play in a BcS bowl.
As a matter of...fACT
North Carolina has come from be-hind in all but one of its wins this season, while Maryland is 3-0 in games decided by seven points or less and has won two of their three ACC games with fourth-quarter game-winning field goals.
Atlantic Division Coastal Division(#16) North Carolina at MarylandKicking Up Their Heels
the acc is a train wreck. What you have here is about eight teams who are decent, all of which are probably good enough to finish seventh in the Big 12 or Sec, if you’re seeking a relative comparison. So when we say the best two in the acc may be squaring off this week, don’t get too excited. Still, this will be a good, solid game to watch. after going win-less on the road last season, the heels have already won twice away from home this season. Because of its defense, make it three.
PREDICTION: North Carolina 24-20 Legendary Insight“North Carolina’s been getting a lot of attention, while Maryland seems to be under everyone’s radar. Neither team is flashy, but I think the Tar Heels will pull it out because of their opportunistic defense.” – George Welsh
OPiNiON We don’t profess to be city planners or anything, but isn’t the proposed expan-sion just cutting it a little close to existing needs? if the program ever becomes a national title contender, you’d expect more fans to come out of the wood-work, wouldn’t you?
As a matter of...fACT
Rutgers has a season ticket waiting list of more than 12,000. Rutgers’ stadium is undergoing an expan-sion which will increase capac-ity by 14,000, to 56,000. Note: Students will continue to receive free tickets.
Rutgers at South FloridaScarlet Knight Fever Returns
two teams heading in opposite directions. after a brutal start, rutgers has won three straight and very well could salvage its season with a bowl trip. USF, after another great start for the second straight season, is staggering again, losers of three of four. rutgers started USF’s 2007 slide with an upset win over the then-no. 2 Bulls in Piscataway, and we’re inclined to think the Scarlet Knights will continue USF’s slide this week because of the recent play of senior quarterback Mike teel and the rutgers defense. USF has the revenge factor on its side, though. hmmm. We’ll go with the hotter team.
PREDICTION: Rutgers 31-23
Legendary Insight“Rutgers is finally playing the way you’d expect while South Florida is underperforming given all its talent. I think USF will have last year’s loss on their minds. Look for that to carry them.” – Bill Mallory

OPiNiON When you can hold an opponent under 20 points, and not just force turn-overs but score off them, chances are that you can win nine games in a sea-son. ask Minnesota.
As a matter of...fACT
Minnesota ranks third nationally in turnover margin (+1.50), is 22nd in scoring defense (19 points per game) and are 23rd in red zone efficiency (.88, 29 of 33).
Minnesota at WisconsinGopher Nine Wins!
Wisconsin was once ranked eighth nationally. now, they need to beat Minnesota this week to be bowl-eligible. Minnesota won just one game a year ago. now the Gophers, despite losing two in a row, are victories over the Badgers and iowa from posting a nine-win season, which would be one of the greatest one-season turnarounds in history. Wisconsin is too goofy to figure out, as coach Brett Bielema’s game management has left a lot to be desired. actually it’s been awful (see losses to Michigan and Michigan State). We’re guessing Minnesota gets back on track.
PREDICTION: Minnesota 24-20
Legendary Insight“I don’t know how good Minnesota really is, but you have to appreciate what their coach has done in one year. Wisconsin’s too up-and-down but they’ll probably win because they’re at home.” – John Cooper
OPiNiON What more needs said? and Brown is kickin’ butt in the second-best confer-ence. and the longhorns are fun to watch! Yes, you can win and be entertain-ing at the same time!
As a matter of...fACT
A win over Kansas would give Coach Mack Brown his eighth straight 10-win season at Texas, a feat unmatched by any other pro-gram nationally. Overall, Texas’ 112 victories over the last 11 years are the most in the nation.
(#3) Texas at KansasThis Week’s Upset Alert
if ever there was a trap game. . . Yes, you’ve read this script before. Despite it’s last-second loss to now-no. 2 texas tech two weeks ago, the longhorns remain in the thick of the national title race. thus, they’re doing a lot of other scoreboard watching, but they better keep an eye on their own because the fighting Manginos are not to be taken lightly. Yeah, we know the Jayhawks have no signature wins to date, but that’s exactly why we’re on upset alert. texas has the nation’s best road record (32-7) over the last six years, so they’ll probably get the job done. . . but just barely.
PREDICTION: Texas 34-28Legendary Insight“Kansas has really struggled defensively all season, so I’d expect UT quarterback Colt McCoy to have a big day. If Texas isn’t caught looking ahead, this will be a rout.” – Gene Stallings

OPiNiON coach Jim harbaugh (for-mer Michigan quarterback) has done a terrific job at Stanford, and might have gotten the U of M job last winter had he not bashed his alma mater for its lax academic policies. thanks Jim; we’re thrilled with three-win richrod!
As a matter of...fACT
This year marks the first time Stanford has opened 4-0 at home since 1977, when Bill Walsh’s first Stanford team posted a 6-0 home record. That guy went on and did a pretty good job as an NFL coach, we recall.
(#6) USC at StanfordBlue Moon Is GoneForget it. Don’t even go there. Stanford has absolutely zero chance of pulling off a monu-
mental upset over USc a second straight year. that blue moon has come and gone. it doesn’t matter that Stanford is unbeaten at home this year. and yes, we know Stanford beat oregon State, which in turn beat USc. Sorry, but the transitive theory (we knew freshman geometry would pay off somewhere down the road!) doesn’t work here. and we realize that coach Jim harbaugh’s cardinal are a legitimate team this year, a mere win from bowl eligibility. But this is going to be a rout because USc hasn’t forgotten last season.
PREDICTION: USC 54-17Legendary Insight“USC has revenge on its mind, but it needs to be careful because Stanford is one of those schizo-phrenic teams that is dangerous. This won’t be the blowout many are expecting.” – John Robinson
OPiNiON the ole’ ball coach knows how to keep his team in games, but he just doesn’t have the horses to finish the job. that’s why many believe he’ll leave for a job where the recruiting is easier.
As a matter of...fACT
12 of Coach Steve Spurrier’s 19 losses at South Carolina have been by a touchdown or less, including all three this season. Of the 12, eight have been against ranked teams.
(#25) South Carolina at (#4) FloridaWelcome Home Gator Bait
there’s only one storyline here, so we’ll go with it. South carolina coach Steve Spurrier returns home to face the school he led to a national cham-pionship in 1996. the Gators, with quarterback tim tebow working his way back into the heisman race, may be the nation’s hottest team on both sides of the ball right now. the Gamecocks, meanwhile, rank 91st nationally in turnover margin and feature a redshirt freshman at quarter-back. that’s not a good combo for a team entering the Swamp.
PREDICTION: Florida 38-13
Legendary Insight“Florida’s operating on all cylinders right now, especially Tim Tebow. Plus, they’re still in the national title picture, so they’ll be very focused in this game.” – Pat Dye

Penn State’s loss to Iowa last week validates my long-time assertion that Ohio State Coach Jim Tressel’s persistent big-game strategy of play-ing not to lose fails in the long run. And I fear it will start to sabotage his program.
The play-it-close-to-the-Tressel-vest plan worked in 2002, especially in the national cham-pionship against Miami (FL). It hasn’t since.
Note: In the 2006 win at Texas, in a rare exception to the Vest rule, he opened things up offensively from the opening possession. Result: Game over at halftime. Great win.
It’s been the complete opposite since. Florida, LSU, USC and now Penn State.
Iowa is not a good football team. The Hawkeyes don’t possess one-tenth the talent Ohio State has, yet they managed to score 24 points against the league’s best defense in pull-ing off the upset.
The Buckeyes managed a pair of field goals against the Nittany Lions. Had Tress let quar-terback Terrelle Pryor loose, as he did against Northwestern in the second half last week, OSU would be unbeaten in the Big Ten today.
Let’s hope Tress allows the attacking style offense to carry over into the first half against
Illinois this week. The Illini have struggled this season, but they still score a lot of points and have a quarterback, Juice Williams, who can take over a game (as we saw last year in Columbus).
You may be questioning why I’m harping on this issue given that the Buckeye offense threw caution to the wind in the final 30 minutes at Northwestern. Perhaps those ultra-conservative days are a thing of the past, you suggest.
I doubt it. What transpired against the Wildcats was more accident than strategy. The fake punt was called because of a strong wind, and the TD run on the game’s final play actually caused Tressel to grimace, as a national televi-sion audience witnessed. He did not want his
team to score.Tress is not ‘built’ to go
for any team’s jugular vein, and he doesn’t believe in style points. But that needs to change, else recruiting, especially the skilled positions, is going to suffer.
Consider: Would you want your son playing for this Buckeye offense? OK, I would, but only because I’m an Ohio native and diehard fan to the nth degree. But the folks down South, on the East Coast and out West aren’t like me. To them, Sloopy is a Disney character.
For Ohio State to remain a national power, it must find its wideouts, and often times its quarterbacks, outside the state borders. And I’m starting to wonder if it’s the same for line-men, though for now I’ll still opt to throw the coaching staff under the bus for the consistently anemic performance in the trenches.
The majority of Buckeye fans will agree that most of Tressel’s OSU offenses, especially the 2008 version, have been somewhat painful to watch. Now if we feel that way, what do you sup-pose the nation’s top prospects are thinking?
Buckeyes Must Stay Aggressive Offensively
The play-it-close-to-the-Tressel-vest plan worked in
2002, especially in the national championship against Miami
(FL). It hasn’t since.

Last week we warned Ohio State against taking a Cat nap. Northwestern made us nervous. Fortunately, the Bucks took care of business.
This week we’ve got the jit-ters even worse. Illinois has the Juice and we know what that means. The Buckeye defense had better buckle down and play assignment football like they’ve never played before.
Though Illinois’ upset over then-No. 1 Ohio State last November didn’t ultimately cost the Buckeyes a shot at the national championship, at the time it was one of the most painful losses ever to witness.
Not just because Ohio State lost, but how it lost. Led by quarterback Juice Williams, the Illini just slammed the ball down the Buckeyes’ collective throat, draining the final eight min-utes off the clock to preserve a 28-21 win in the Horseshoe.
The Buckeye defense, as well as OSU fans nationwide, just seemed to watch helplessly as Williams ran on draws, sneaks and improvi-sational scrambles to convert one third down
after another.Well, Williams is back and
this time the Illini are hoping to be rude hosts as they try to salvage what has been a vastly disappointing season. Because of losing to Western Michigan in Detroit last week, the Illini still need one win to become bowl eligible, and that alone should provide motivation for them to pull off another upset of the Buckeyes.
More than anything, though, we’re simply worried about the Juice.
This ain’t no gimme, folks.
BREAKIN’ IT DOWNOSU OFFENSE VS. ILLINOIS DEFENSE
We’re more confused than ever, but more hopeful than ever as well.
Someone flip-flopped OSU Coach Jim Tressel’s ‘play’ card last week, as the stuff that was supposed to be run in the first half, like the deep passes and fake punt, were done in the second half, while the steady diet of first and
second down dives were executed (actually they failed miserably as usual) in the first half.
Hopefully, Tress and his staff have that mess all sorted out. Yes, we’re kidding.
For sure, if the big boss lets quarterback Terrelle Pryor air it out like he did in the second half in Evanston, this game may not be as close as advertised.
As for running back Beanie Wells, it appears he’ll have to keep getting his yards on his own, as the line continues to falter.
Good news: The Illini defense is shaky, giving up 26 points and 350 yards a game. There’s no reason the Buckeyes shouldn’t be able to manufacture three TDs and a couple field goals.
Advantage: Even
ILLINOIS OFFENSE VS. OSU DEFENSE
On one hand, it’s worth noting that Williams has not been as effective running this season due to the loss of running back Rashard Mendenhall to the NFL. Without question, that duo was as dynamic and dangerous as can be; everything Buckeye Nation hopes Pryor and Wells will become.
Still, Williams can put on a hell of a one-

man show when he wants, as he single-hand-edly beat Michigan in Ann Arbor early this season, accounting for more than 400 yards of offense.
Surprisingly, Illinois leads the Big Ten in passing (272 yards per game) and has the sec-ond-best offense overall, averaging 33 points and 450 yards a game. Williams has 20 TD passes.
Veteran Arrelious Benn is once again the main target with 60 receptions for 947 yards (15.8 avg.) and three scores.
The Illini’s problem has been that they’ve gotten lulled to sleep against lesser competi-tion. That won’t be the case this week.
Advantage: Illinois
SPECIAL TEAMSIllinois’ return teams are OK, as Benn
returns both punts and kicks, averaging 10.1 and 21.6 yards respectively. A.J. Jenkins has the team’s only return for a score, covering 96 yards.
The Illini kicking game is so-so as well. Matt Eller has made only 12 of 17 field goals, though one was from 51 yards. He has missed three from within 40, though.
Punter Anthony Santella averages a suspect 39.6 yards, but seven boots have been longer than 50 and 10 have been downed inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.
Buckeye booters – punter A.J. Trapasso and kicker Ryan Pretorious – are better.
The return teams are a wash.Advantage: Ohio State
INTANGIBLESThe Buckeyes have the revenge factor, the
goal of winning a fourth straight Big Ten cham-pionship and earning another BCS bowl bid. You’d think that would inspire.
Advantage: Ohio State
THE WAY WE SEE ITWe ain’t gonna kid ya; we don’t like this
game one bit. The Juice scares the bejesus out of us; it’s that simple. Still, we expect the Buckeyes to pull this one out in dramatic fashion. It might even take overtime.
OHIO STATE 27-21

One word this week for the Buckeyes: Revenge! OSU 38-17.
Larry Larson
Remember a year ago? The Buckeyes couldn’t stop the Illinois offense in the second half and QB Juice Williams is still around. RB Rashard Mendenhall isn’t, and that changes things just enough. OSU 24-21.
Dave Maetzold
Remember your mother telling you to drink your juice for breakfast? Well, Illinois juices it up for the Buckeyes with the offensive exploits of QB Juice Williams, but still fall short as OSU forces him into a costly mistake late in the game. OSU 23-20.
Matt McCoy
You have to believe the Buckeye defense has been chomping at the bit to squeeze the Juice out of Illinois. James Laurinaitis, Malcolm Jenkins and crew will carry the day. OSU 23-13.
Dave Purdy
Juice Williams was nearly perfect last year in Illinois’ upset in Ohio Stadium. So the Buckeye defense must put the heat on him and force him to make mistakes. If that happens, and Beanie keeps running wild, Buckeyes win. OSU 24-17.
Joel Riley
Let’s get back into the Big Ten championship race! Illinois is cer-tainly the right opponent to get that done, right? Buckeyes inch closer to a fourth consecutive league title. OSU 24-13.

Though the Cleveland Browns are certainly in disarray, this is no time to play the blame game.
And by the blame game, I mean Coach Romeo Crennel and the Browns front office singling out quarterback Derek Anderson as the lone reason the Browns have started so poorly.
Anderson is not the problem. He was a Pro Bowl quarterback last year and the Browns signed him to a three-year, $28 million contract during the off-season. Why go through such measures if he truly isn’t an NFL starting quarterback?
If there is somebody to justly blame for the offense’s struggles, let the finger pointing start at Cleveland’s receivers. Braylon Edwards, a Pro Bowl receiver last year, has dropped an NFL worst 14 passes this year.
Wide receiver Donte Stallworth, a free-agent acquisition who was sup-posed to make the Browns passing game even more potent by drawing defenders away from Edwards, has been injured almost the entire season.
And don’t forget about tight end
Kellen Winslow. He has missed almost as much time as Stallworth and surely hasn’t played up to his
Pro Bowl potential when healthy. So it’s not like the players around
the quarterback are just going to start kicking it into gear because somebody different is playing the position.
The bottom line is that move reeks of concession to fan and media pres-sure. Anderson has earned his role as captain and starter, while Brady Quinn is not ready to be the man.
Sometimes change is nec-essary for the sake of change, especially in sports.
The Browns’ losing record is cer-tainly not Derek Anderson’s fault. He can’t help that wideout Braylon Edwards has dropped 14 passes or that tight end Kellen Winslow had some mysterious injury that kept him sidelined a bit.
But without question, Anderson’s play has epitomized that of the team overall. It’s been erratic, and you can’t have an inconsistent quarter-
back leading your team in the NFL.While Brady Quinn hasn’t done
anything to earn the starting job, we all know he was a first round draft choice who was designated to be the future ‘face’ of the franchise.
With the team teetering on the brink of playoff elimination, there’s no reason not to give Quinn a chance to show his stuff.
For all intents and purposes, Anderson’s career as a Brown is over.
His contract is too rich to be a back-up, but not so much so that he won’t be a starter for someone else next season.
The Browns still have Ken Dorsey to back up Quinn. Dorsey
isn’t anything special, but find an NFL backup who is? He’s decent at the very least.
Alas, Browns fans have wanted to see Quinn take over for some time, and while ownership should never wilt to fan pressure, soothing the wounds of those who were expecting a Super Bowl-run type of season isn’t such a bad idea.
Did the Cleveland Browns make the right decision in benching Derek Anderson in favor of Brady Quinn?

Sitting at 3-6 and completely eradicated from the playoff race, it is now officially the Brady Quinn era.
With that said, the quarterback controversy that has been brewing ever since the Browns drafted Brady is finally OVER.
No more media questions for Coach Romeo Crennel on when Quinn will play. And after witness-ing Quinn in action last week against Denver, there probably won’t be any on whether Derek Anderson will get his job back.
There is no chance we’ll see Anderson back under center for the remainder of the slate, unless, God for-bid, Quinn is injured.
The season has been washed away by torrents of erratic play and coaching, so with all hope lost on the season, you’d figure that general manager Phil Savage and Crennel would like to get a good look at Quinn.
They’ll want questions answered, such as wheth-er Quinn can throw the deep ball, if he can make the proper reads, if he can be consistent and if he can be a leader.
My next thoughts go out to those analyzing Quinn: The seat that Crennel is currently sitting on is no longer “hot.” It is now in fact “scorching.”
Crennel came from New England with his defen-sive guru reputation preceding him. Yet, the Browns have had anything but a good defense in Crennel’s three-plus seasons in Cleveland. And the defense is
regressing. The Browns gave up a combined 993 total yards
in losing its last two to Baltimore and Denver – both losses coming after Cleveland held 13-point second-half leads.
So Crennel’s job security is very un-secured. As well as it should be, along with the rest of those in the Browns front office.
Owner Randy Lerner should be examining his team long and hard, from the top with Savage to the 53rd player on the Browns roster. Yes, this team might be in for a major overhaul after the season.
Cleveland now travels to Buffalo for yet anoth-er nationally televised game on “Monday Night Football.” Don’t anticipate the losing skid to end.
While the offense looked very respectable with Quinn against Denver, three drives still ended with field goals instead of what should’ve been TDs.
And Buffalo is a much-improved team with a young and exciting defense.
Its offense, while not the most explosive in the league, is good enough to rack up a lot of points against the Browns’ bad defense. Quinn will surely struggle to keep pace, as he did last week against the Broncos.
Okay, let’s talk about something positive. The Ohio State Buckeyes have a lot to play
for this week as they head to Illinois. The national
championship is clearly out of the picture, but because of Penn State’s loss at Iowa last week, the hopes for a Big Ten co-championship are certainly present. As is a berth in a BCS bowl.
So a lot is on the line in OSU’s final two games. Win out and the Bucks are looking very good in regards to a fourth-consecutive league title, albeit a co-championship. But we’ll take it nonetheless.
The Illini looked more cowardly than “Fighting” last week in a loss to Western Michigan, and I expect the Buckeyes to continue their misery.
Though quarterback Juice Williams single-hand-edly beat OSU last year in the ‘Shoe, he doesn’t have Rashard Mendenhall’s services this year, which makes the Juice Illinois’ sole rushing threat.
Thus OSU should have no trouble containing Mr. Williams this year. In conclusion, I foresee a 24-14 Buckeye win in Champaign. BCS bowl bound? It is still possible! Go Bucks!

This doesn’t happen often if you’re a fan of the Cincinnati Bengals, so do it now while you can. Go ahead. You know you want to do it.
Dream. What do you have to lose? Your
faith in the Bengals? I’m guessing that’s been gone for a long time.
Dare to dream now, while you can, and it’s like playing with house money. If you get let down, it’s not a big deal. You expect to get let down. You might even, by now, enjoy being let down.
But dream now and the damned-est thing might just happen. You might just be rewarded.
The Bengals are coming off their only – sorry, their first – victory of the season, and after a bye week, they will go for their second con-secutive win Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Dream about it, because there are actual, concrete reasons to think
something good could be brewing for the Bengals.
For one thing, there was that win against the Jaguars. Jacksonville’s 4-5 record obscures the fact that the Jags are a good team – boring, but good. They run the ball. They stop the run. They have a game-manag-ing quarterback who doesn’t make critical mistakes. And the Bengals beat them.
The Eagles are better than the Jaguars, but since we’re dreaming, dream about this: The return of Carson Palmer.
He has missed five games, including the last four, with sore-ness in his elbow, but he spent the bye week traveling the country – going all the way to California, in fact – for more medical opinions on his elbow. Maybe one of those opinions will come back as good news. That he can in fact return to the field this week without risking further damage.
Now look at the back-field.
Palmer, if he plays, wouldn’t be handing the ball to Chris Perry or Kenny Watson, who have averaged three yards a carry this season.
He would be handing it to Cedric Benson, the Chicago Bear castoff who has been a revelation with the Bengals. Benson rushed for 104 yards on 24 tough carries against Jacksonville, with a long run of 30.
Benson gave the Bengals their first 100-yard rushing performance this season, and given how little pounding he has taken in recent years while playing sparingly for Chicago, there ought to be plenty in his tank for more.
Now look at the receiving corps.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh remains one of the NFL’s most productive receivers with 61 catches through nine games, putting him on pace for
another 100-plus reception season. Better yet, Chad Ocho Cinco
is starting to play more like Chad Johnson. Against the Jags, Johnson had two touchdown catches and was so pleased that he gave Coach Marvin Lewis – with whom he has notoriously feuded – a kiss on the cheek.
And then there is Chris Henry, who has been back for a month and should be ready to have a break-out game, like maybe this weekend against the Eagles.
Look at it rationally. You know the Bengals could maybe be on the verge of something special. Opportunities like this don’t come along often, Bengal fan, so dream a little dream.
Just don’t blame me when you wake up and the Eagles are winning 42-3.

Who knows more about the NFL — The Bengals media or the Browns media? Let’s find out as Gregg Doyel and Kenny Roda go at it like Cats and Dawgs all season long.
Eagles. The odds were against the Bengals winning once this year. Twice? In a row? Only $14 million lottery winners cash in on those odds.
Eagles. First off, con-grats to the Bengals
for finally winning two weeks ago against Jacksonville. But they still won’t have Carson Palmer in this one.
Bills. Brady Quinn will be the most handsome quar-terback in the stadium - unless I’m behind center for the Bills - but Buffalo is an ugly, ugly place for visitors.
Bills. The Brady Quinn era is here and so far, so
good. But the Mighty Quinn can’t beat the Bills alone. Cleveland’s defense still stinks and there’s no way Quinn and Co. can compen-sate for it on “Monday Night Football.”

Patriots. If he has to cheat to do it, Bill Belichick will find a way to beat Eric Mangini. Not that Belichick would cheat. Ever.
Jets. I’m feeling a little Brett Favre magic. It’ll
be just enough, as beating the mad scien-tist (a.k.a. Bill Belichick) and the Pats in their home is never easy.

Giants. As good as the Ravens have been this season, New York is going to win this thing in an Obama-like rout.

Cowboys. I’ve got a feeling that Tony Romo will play, and play well. But I also had a feeling that Ryan Leaf would be a better NFL player than Peyton Manning. So ignore me.

OK, the season is officially over. Now what? The Browns effectively ruined any chance of
qualifying for the playoffs by handing victories on a silver platter to both Baltimore and Denver.
Cleveland is now 3-6. It’s November and Browns fans are already thinking about next year’s NFL Draft.
Monday night at Buffalo could have been a meaningful game. The Bills are scratching and clawing for a division title or wild card berth, and had the Browns taken care of business the past two weeks, the same could have been said for them.
And because of that, it’s hard to imagine Cleveland having any motivation at all against Buffalo.
The Bills, on the other hand, took advantage of a weak early-season schedule to sprint out to a 5-1 start, but have slumped of late. They looked like world-beaters in wins against teams with a combined 12-28 record, but losses to Miami, the New York Jets and New England have certainly thwarted their momentum.
Meanwhile, it remains to be seen if the Browns can intensely compete now that nothing but pride is at stake.
BROWNS
OFFENSE VS.BILLS DEFENSE
That earlier statement about Browns fans hav-ing only the draft to look forward to? That’s not entirely accurate.
There’s also Brady Quinn.Quinn performed admirably in the loss to
Denver, but questions certainly remain, the most intriguing of which is this:
Can he throw more than short passes and screens? And if he can, will the Browns allow him to?
Braylon Edwards was held to just one catch against the Broncos, which had much to do with offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski being afraid to let Quinn heave it deep. And what’s the deal with Donte Stallworth? Why did the Browns sign him if they didn’t plan to use him?
The Bills ranked seventh in the NFL in yards allowed per game after Week 9, but were merely middle of the pack in points allowed and rather low in rushing yards surrendered.
They are far from opportunistic, as their low total of five interceptions attests. And they don’t boast one defender with more than two sacks, though their team total of 14 is respectable.
Buffalo features two talented linebackers in Paul Posluszny and Kawika Mitchell, and a rangy veteran safety in Cleveland native Donte Whitner.
Cornerback Jabari Greer leads the team with two interceptions, both of which he returned for touchdowns.
Speaking of touchdowns, look for the Browns to score at least a couple in this one. But it won’t make up for the ones the Bills will score on the porous Cleveland defense.
SLIGHT ADVANTAGE: Bills
BILLS OFFENSE VS.BROWNS DEFENSE
So what happened?Earlier this year, the Browns
defense was rolling as they figured out how to stop the run. And young corner-
backs Eric Wright and Brandon McDonald had pro-vided sound reason for optimism.
But that now seems like eons ago.
The Browns were torched by the offensively challenged Ravens and the injury riddled Broncos. And Denver passed at will, particularly in McDonald’s direction. He has without a doubt regressed as a cover man as the season has progressed.
So Bills quarterback Trent Edwards must be licking his chops, though his offense is having problems of its own. Edwards has managed games well, but his seven touchdown passes shows he has nobody to pass to other than Lee Evans. And the Buffalo running game
has proven less effective than expected. Featured back Marshawn
Lynch has yet to rush for 100 yards in any game and managed just 16 yards on nine carries against a bad Jets defense. The Bills have also lost an AFC-leading 10 fumbles. While that’s not entirely Lynch’s fault, it’s alarming nonetheless.
What also is disturbing is that the Browns allow 4.7 yards per rush, which is 30th in the NFL. That should cure what is ailing Lynch and the Bills.
In addition to that, the Browns’ mindset will certainly be a factor here. Have they lost their confi-dence? Will they perform with intensity now that there’s nothing tangible to play for?
ADVANTAGE: Bills
SPECIAL TEAMSWarning to Browns opponents: Josh Cribbs
has been unleashed. One wondered when Cribbs would take one
to the house, but one must wonder no longer. He piled up 247 yards on kick returns and returned one for a TD against Baltimore. He then performed brilliantly in the loss to Denver.
The Bills, meanwhile, have been solid on punt returns. Roscoe Parrish and Fred Jackson average nearly 15 yards a return between them, though kickoff returner Leodis McKelvin has been no more than average.
Bills punter Brian Moorman has been among the best in the game, but placekicker Rian Lindell has been inconsistent, particular-ly on longer attempts. Browns placekicker Phil Dawson has proven far more reliable.

MARTY MAKES THE CALL
Losing takes a toll on a team. But blowing two-TD leads in successive home games is devastating. Most especially when it costs you the playoffs.
Motivation plays a huge role in any given
game. Perhaps playing on “Monday Night Football” will spark the Browns. But if they have indeed been emotionally crushed by their departure from the playoff race, then this could be a blowout.
Because of injuries the Broncos had no running game against the Browns, but still passed the pigskin all over the place. Trent Edwards and the Bills will likely do the same.
The bet here is that the Browns will remain motivated as they play before a national TV audience. Just don’t bet on Cleveland to win.

Ready the confetti. Throw a parade around Paul Brown Stadium. It’s time to celebrate!
The Bengals won!Perhaps a snowball can survive in hell.Beating the Jaguars is not akin to David
slaying Goliath, but the Bengals would have welcomed taking on any local junior high team if it resulted in making a dent in the old win column.
And wasn’t it appropriate the schedule-makers allowed the Bengals more time to enjoy such a rare feat? But, all good things must come to an end. The bye week is over, and now the Bengals must play the Philadelphia Eagles – one of the best-run franchises in the NFL.
The Eagles have the misfortune of compet-ing in the NFC East, widely regarded as the NFL’s best division. Heading into Week 10, they managed just one victory against a winning team (Pittsburgh), but they’ve beaten every team with a losing record. That fact doesn’t bode well for the Bengals.
BENGALS OFFENSE VS.EAGLES DEFENSE
Bengals quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has certainly been no Carson Palmer, but he has managed games a bit better of late.
And the steadying influence of Cedric Benson at featured back has helped. Benson rushed for 104 yards in the victory over Jacksonville and is averaging a respectable 3.7 yards a carry.
Even Chad Johnson has shown flashes of his former self, scoring two touchdowns in the unexpected win over the Jaguars.
But defensively, the Eagles are not the Jaguars. Philly is much better as it ranks sev-enth in the NFL in points allowed per game (18.1) and fifth in yards surrendered (280.5).
Behind the talents of defensive ends Darren Howard and Juqua Parker, Philly has racked up a whopping 27 sacks. The formidable second-ary featuring cornerbacks Asante Samuel and Sheldon Brown, and safeties Brian Dawkins and Quintin Mikell, have been stellar in shutting down opposing receivers.
ADVANTAGE: Eagles
EAGLES OFFENSE VS.BENGALS DEFENSE
Remember your fantasy draft? Many of you wanted Brian Westbrook with that first pick.
It hasn’t worked out, has it?The Eagles’ featured back remains effective,
but certainly is not the horse that can carry you to a championship. A knee injury has limited his production. He has broken the 100-yard barrier just once.
Quarterback Donovan McNabb, however, has been sensational.
He’s thrown for nearly 2,200 yards and 10 touchdowns despite injuries and a lack of a true scoring threat at wide receiver. DeSean Jackson has emerged as a force and is on pace for 1,000
receiving yards while Kevin Curtis’ return from injury gives Philly a fine receiver duo. But the pair has combined for just one touchdown in 2008.
The Bengals performed respectably against the Jaguars, but yielded at least 26 points in each of their prior four games. A season-ending injury to promising rookie linebacker Keith Rivers has taken a toll, as has a pass defense that has surrendered 13 touchdowns.
Cincinnati has played well defensively in short bursts, but never for an entire game, in large part because it can’t generate a pass rush.
And don’t look for that to change. Philly is too talented, despite its struggles on the ground, to be shut down by the Bengals. Look for the Eagles to score at least 24 points.
ADVANTAGE: Eagles
SPECIAL TEAMSThe best of this bunch on either team is
Eagles punter Sav Rocca, who is averaging 45.4
yards a boot. The opposition averages a paltry 4.3 yards a return against Rocca, much in part to his terrific hang time.
Veteran Eagle placekicker David Akers is perfect on field-goal attempts of less than 40 yards, but has missed all three tries of 50-plus.
Kick returners Quintin Depps and DeSean Jackson have been fine, but unspectacular.
The same can be said for the Cincinnati triplet of placekicker Shayne Graham, kickoff returner Glenn Holt and punt returner Antonio Chatman. But punter Kyle Larson has been par-ticularly disappointing, to say the least.

MARTY MAKES THE CALLLet’s see. We’re giving the edge to
Philadelphia in offense, defense and special teams, and the Eagles are playing for at the very minimum a playoff spot, but have a divi-sion crown on their minds. The Bengals are playing for nothing more than pride.
Moreover, Cincinnati simply can’t match Philadelphia in talent on either side of the ball. It would be rather surprising to see Fitzpatrick play well against a very good Eagle pass defense that relentlessly rushes the quarterback.
The Bengals are coming off a win and they’re at home, so a blow-out might not be in the works. But don’t bet the house on a two-game win streak either.

DIVISION IHilliard Davidson (11-1) vs. Pickerington Central (12-0)
Hilliard Davidson is trying to make a sandwich. If the Wildcats win the state title this year after
failing to qualify for the playoffs last year, they would have a state title sandwich with the 2006 championship under their belt.
Davidson took a big step in that direction last week with a 21-7 win over Worthington Kilbourne.
Davidson’s next opponent? Yeah, they’re not too bad.
Pickerington Central hadn’t even trailed in a game all season until last week against Upper Arlington.
Yet the Tigers emerged with a 24-16 win none-theless.
Ohio State recruits Jamie Wood and Zach Boren, as well as Michigan State-bound Patrick White, were all playing in the same backfield – something Coach Jay Sharrett hadn’t tinkered with all season.
Prediction: Pickerington Central 24, Hilliard Davidson 21
DIVISION IISt. Francis DeSales (12-0) vs.
Louisville (12-0)Just the way it should be!It’s the No. 1 seed St. Francis DeSales vs. the No.
2 seed Louisville. Their paths have proved quite similar. Both were
forced to muscle their way to hard-fought victories last week as DeSales overcame Marion-Franklin, 31-23, and Louisville blanked Logan, 7-0.
DeSales fans were starting to think basketball season when the Stallions fell behind early.
But DeSales scored two touchdowns in a 15-sec-ond span of a 28-point second quarter to take con-trol.
Louisville, meanwhile, needed no such offensive heroics. The Leopard defense blanked a Logan team that entered averaging 34.3 points.
Prediction: St. Francis DeSales 17, Louisville 12
DIVISION IIIDover (11-1) vs. Licking Valley (11-1)
Can the Tornadoes turn Storm into a drizzle? The Tornadoes in question play football for
Dover. Storm is Licking Valley running back and soon-to-be Ohio State Buckeye Storm Klein.
Klein rushed for 188 yards in a 41-7 pounding of Poland Seminary last week. Supplementing Klein’s usual dominance was Drew Ryan, who added 110 rushing yards.
Dover set up this showdown with a 35-14 revenge win over Canton South, who’s responsible for Dover’s lone loss.
After throwing three first-half interceptions, senior quarterback Corey Lisowski atoned for his sins by rushing for two touchdowns and passed for another during the second half in leading the Tornadoes to victory.
Such mistakes, however, will be severely punish-ing when facing a team like Klein’s Wildcats.
Prediction: Licking Valley 28, Dover 20

DIVISION IIIEastmoor Academy (11-1) vs. Logan Elm (12-0)
As the 2008 football season proved, it wasn’t easy marching downfield against the Sheridan Generals.
But Eastmoor Academy quarter-back Malon Johnson and his Warriors did the impossible last week.
Johnson completed 13 of 20 passes for 191 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-6 win over Sheridan, and now Eastmoor will play in its first ever regional final this week.
But things never get easier as the playoffs progress. Case in point: Up next for the Warriors is unbeaten Logan Elm, which features Johnnie Brown, who scored on a 2-yard run and added a 58-yard scoring strike to Taylor Steed in a 28-14 win over Chillicothe last week.
The defensive standout was Luke Konkle, who raced 33 yards for a TD after recovering a fumble to help his team jump out to a 21-0 lead.Prediction: Logan Elm 26, Eastmoor Academy 17
DIVISION IVMartins Ferry (11-1) vs. New Lexington (11-1)
Martins Ferry senior wideout/linebacker Clay Francis did every-thing but man the concession stands last week against the Union Local Jets. For sure, the Jets probably wish he’d been selling hotdogs instead playing football.
Francis scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeremy Murray. He followed that with a 62-yard interception return for a score. Oh, he then picked off another pass which he returned for a TD. All in a span of three minutes!
The Purple Riders thus won big time, 49-14. They’ve now won 11 straight.
But they’ll surely be tested by the New Lexington Panthers, who advanced with a 38-6 win over Ironton.
The Panthers are loaded offensively. Quarterback Clint Cannon has thrown for 1,685 yards and rushed for 909 more. Running back R.J. Starkey, who scored three TDs against Ironton, and receivers Brett Wycinski and Matt Etherly, certainly make life hard for opposing defenses. Prediction: Martins Ferry 28, New Lexington 24
DIVISION VBishop Ready (8-2) vs. Liberty Union (11-1)
The Portsmouth West Senators had scored at least 20 points in every game this season. That is until they faced the Bishop Ready Silver Knights last week.
Ready allowed just 178 total yards and halted three substantial drives in a 17-0 win over the Senators.
Among the defensive stars was Christian Knapper, who intercepted a pass to kill one of those penetrating drives. Steve Christman made a key play offensively, snagging a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brennan McCarty to give the winners a 10-0 lead.
Speaking of offensive contributors, Dustin Love scored two touchdowns to give Liberty Union a 14-7 win over Wheelersburg. But as they say, all good things must come to an end.
With the way Ready is playing defense, the end is in site for Love and the Lions.Prediction: Bishop Ready 8, Liberty Union 7

MELVIN FELLOWSGarfield Heights High School Garfield Heights, OhioDefensive End • 6-5, 245Senior • GPA: 3.0College of Choice: Verbally committed to Ohio StateCommit Date: April 24, 2008Who Lost Out?: Illinois, Louisville, Marshall, Michigan, Notre Dame, USC and West Virginia
The Scoop: Fellows is one of the most heavily recruited players in the Midwest. He’s a tough, physical player, but also a bit of a project. He tends to tackle with his head lowered and doesn’t have a great first step, but Fellows is a heck of a run stuffer and his big body will make it tough for Big Ten blockers to move around. He’ll likely red-shirt his freshman season unless he corrects some of his mechanics prior to fall camp 2009.
