TENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 5, 2016

Today, the Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, we return to numbered weeks rather than seasons or solemnities. We are told stories of two widowed mothers whose only sons have died. They find themselves grief-stricken and alone. Jesus was himself the only son of a widowed mother so his compassion for the grieving mother described in Luke is especially poignant. What is perhaps surprising is that it takes something as catastrophic as the loss of a son and his restoration for the mothers and the crowd to recognize that God is in their midst. Through their personal experience of death and resurrection, they recognize God, but a God who had always been present to them, even from their mother’s womb. Today’s readings ask us how we recognize God in the face of terrible loss and suffering.

GOD IN OUR MIDST In our reading from First Kings, Elijah visits the house of a widowed mother whose only son falls ill and dies. Elijah, calling upon God, restores life to her son. The grieving mother recognizes Elijah as a man of God only after he restores her son to life. In Galatians, Paul fails to recognize God in his presence even as he is persecuting and trying to destroy those who follow Christ. Through God’s grace, Jesus Christ is revealed to Paul, who then proclaims that reality. In Luke, another widowed mother’s son has died and is restored to her through the compassion of Jesus. In each instance, God is there, with the mothers and with Paul, waiting to be recognized. God is only recognized, however, when what is most precious, most beloved, most central to the life of each person has been lost and restored, has died and been resurrected.

Today’s Readings: 1 Kgs 17:17–24; Ps 30:2, 4–6, 11–13; Gal 1:11–19; Lk 7:11–17 (Worship Pgs. 1138)

LETTER FROM THE CARDINAL ABOUT THE BLACK AND INDIAN MISSION SECOND COLLECTION

When we are told that the Lord calls each of us to be co-missionaries and co-evangelizers of the Church, as was Saint Paul and the other apostles, we do not often realize how much mission work there is to be done in the United States. There is far more than you or I could ever imagine.

The annual National Black and Indian Mission Collection, taken up in parishes across the nation, enables the Church in the United States to provide desperately required pastoral, educational and spiritually assistance to some of the neediest of our brothers and sister in the Lord. From the inner-cities of the rural south to the deserts of the southwest to the wilderness of Alaska, grants from the annual appeal make it possible for the Church to assist our Black and Indian Catholic Communities. Here in the archdiocese, we receive, grants twice per year that are applied to Black parishes in Harlem and the Bronx, making it possible for them to serve their parishioners much more than they could on their own. With this letter, I invite you to be as generous as you possibly can be in making a sacrificial offering to this crucially important and necessary ministry of the Church. With gratitude and prayerful best wishes, I am Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan

ROCKLAND COUNTY COALITION The Assisted Suicide legislation that is advancing in the New York State Legislature will affect the life of OUR nation and OUR community. This legislation will endanger the poor, elderly, and those with disabilities, serious depression or lack of mental capacity. This legislation will encourage medical decisions based on a patient’s perceived "quality of life" and pressure many elderly and sick to feel that they have the "duty" to die. This legislation will give the appearance that suicide is acceptable and increase assisted suicide. Please contact your elected representatives and encourage them to vote “No”against Assisted Suicide in New York State. To find who your representative is go to: http://www.elections.ny.gov/district-map/district-map.html or call the Rockland County Board of Elections at 845-638-5172, give them your name and address and they will tell you the name of your representative.
