Dear Parents/Guardians:

Congratu-lations to all our band members and thank you to Mr. Stiak for another won-derful Christ-

mas concert last week! The Christmas countdown is upon us and we are excited about our Christmas Pageant tomorrow and Preschool Christmas Pag-eant next Tuesday! We invite you to attend either or both of these very special celebrations of Jesus’ birth.

I also want to draw your attention to the Capital Campaign update on following page. We thank everyone who has contributed to this campaign for the future of St. Barnabas School and Parish!

I want to express my thanks to the Men’s Club and all the host homes for the Progressive Mixer this year. Special thanks to hosts the Baudos, Crowleys, Lowerys, O’Keefes, and Roaches for volunteering to host this wonderful annual event for our parents, staff and parishioners!

Members of our staff gathered last week (left), wearing Pat Mac gear to celebrate the birthday and honor the leg-acy of Patrick McNamara, who would have been 21 this year.

In the spirit of teaching our junior high students to own their actions and strive to reach their potential, we want to remind parents that students should not be texting/emailing you or others on their iPads or any devices to go home or to bring missing items to school. Students who bring cell phones to school

must turn them off and keep them in their back-packs. To minimize disruptions, we also ask parents to refrain from texting your children throughout the day. Please call the office if you need to reach your child. Please review the cell phone policy from p. 46 of the Parent/Student Handbook below.

Finally, I’d like to invite you to follow us on Insta-gram @stbarnabasschool or link to our page here.

Have a wonderful week!

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices/Smart Watches

Students are prohibited from carrying or using cell phones in school, AND at recess. All cell phones must be in the students’ book bag and turned off at all times. Cell phones not in book bags will be confiscated and the parent must pick up the cell phone. The cell phone cannot be used to take pictures in school or at any school event. The school accepts no respon-sibility for these phones. Cell phones are not allowed on school field trips.

Other than the school approved iPad devices for junior high students, portable media players, including wireless hand held devices, smart watchespagers and e-books are not permitted. Consequences for the use of restricted elec-tronic devices during school hours will subject the student to disciplinary action, which may include suspension or expulsion. The school is not responsible for damaged, lost or stolen elec-tronic devices of any kind.

Students shall not utilize the communications capabilities of smart watches during school hours. If a student is found violating this policy: the watch will be confiscated, a parent must pick it up and the student will receive a written consequence.

 December, 2018

Dear St. Barnabas Community:

As we look forward to Christmas and reflect on all that we’re thankful for, we can’t help but be amazed at the over $3.9 million we have already raised for the Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. Capital Campaign thanks to all of you.

We wanted to share with you an update on the Campaign to build the one-story Education Center and renovate the Church Hall. Over the past several weeks, we have seen both an increase in current pledges as well as new pledges from the recent mailing, nearing us ever closer to our original $5 million goal, but we still have some fundraising to do in order to meet that amount. Therefore, we have shifted our focus to a strategic effort to fundraise with alumni and foundation groups. This new focus will delay our groundbreaking, but we feel it is in the best interest of St. Barnabas to come to this project from a financial position of strength.

We are beyond grateful for the support of everyone who has pledged. In the new year, we will move forward to the next phase with Newman Architects – construction and design documentation. We still need to secure $800,000 to $1 million to realize our vision. In the spirit of giving this holiday season, we ask those of you who would like to make a pledge toward the Campaign to visit https://www.givecentral.org/location/49 or contact the Rectory at 773.779.1166.

Thank you for your time and your support of St. Barnabas School and Parish. May you have a blessed Christmas with your families and loved ones!

The 8th-graders had a wonderful time last week with grand-parents and parishioners at the Senior Luncheon. Here is some of what they’ve been working on in the classroom recently:

After learning about the Transfiguration of Jesus, Ms. Ruth’s 8th Grade Religion class created mock interviews with the apostles that were present for the event. Students always get creative and have fun with these! Click here to view a few of the videos (pictured, right) on our website!

In Mrs. Kerr’s 7th and 8th grade ELA classes, students re-cently presented their mock trial of The Tell-Tale Heart by Ed-gar Allen Poe (pictured, below). Students read the text, wrote arguments to support claims with relevant details and clear reasons, and researched possible mental illnesses. Dr. Mirjam Quinn even came in to speak with them about the character-istics of schizophrenia. Some students studied the trial pro-cess further and dressed in costumes inspired by their char-acters

for the trial. Students really enjoyed being able to learn in-depth about this story from many different perspectives!

The junior high teachers wish everyone a safe and relaxing Christmas break!

Gym & Stage Etiquette Reminders

Parents/Guardians: During practices and games in the gym, students may not be on the stage or behind the curtain. There is no opportunity for supervision of students be-hind a curtain, which is unsafe. Also, equip-ment is kept backstage for use during the play that could get damaged.

Students may continue to sit on the edge of the stage if there is no room on the bleachers, , but they may not go on the stage itself or behind the curtain. Please also remind your students to own their actions and clean up after themselves. They should pick up wrap-pers, popcorn containers, drink bottles, etc. and place them in the trash. Thank you!

Reminder: No Band Until 2019!

St. Barnabas Senior and Junior Bands:There will be NO band rehearsal OR lessons on Thursday, December 20, 2018.

Have a wonderful Christmas Break!

- Mr. Stiak

The holiday season is in full swing in the Media Center and we have packed a lot of learning into our short time this month. Primary students have been intrigued by a variety of Christmas stories this season.

Our little elves have also been busy using their computer skills to decorate houses with holiday lights and create word search-es and crossword puzzles for all to enjoy.

Older students (bottom right) have been researching Christmas around the world, coding special holiday ornaments, creating Christmas pixel art and writing entertain-ing holiday stories.

Parents, please check at home for any books that may belong to St. Barnabas. Library books need to be returned before Christmas break so we can take an ac-curate inventory for 2019. Thank you for your help!

We both wish you and your family a very joyous holiday, a safe, enjoy-able and restful break, and a happy and healthy 2019!

~ Mrs. Carroll & Mrs. Davies
