What battles will you tell your family about? What did you do during peacetime? Do you enjoy being in the army? Include good points/bad points

Dear Mum,

I am writing to tell you about my life in the Roman Army. I have been away for a while now and I miss you a lot! Do not worry about me though, I am doing well.

I joined the army because I wanted to protect the Empire and my family. Also the wages for soldiers are higher than any other job, so I can send money home to help look after you! By the time I finish I will be rich, because I will receive a pension and a piece of land!

I use lots of different equipment to help me. I have a shield to protect me and a sword to attack. I also have a bow and arrow to shoot the enemy if they are far away. I think my most useful piece of equipment is my armour, because it protects me when people try to stab me with their swords!

I have also practised several different tactics, and this helps us to win in battles. Some are useful for attacking and others help us defend ourselves. The best one is the tortoise, because we form a sort of shell with our shields to protect us from arrows and spears, which allows us to move forwards without getting hurt. Our tactics are what makes us so successful!

I took part in a battle recently too, which we won! It was hard to start off with, because Boudicca and her army greatly outnumbered us, and she was a very strong leader. We did win in the end though, mainly because we had much better tactics, equipment and training. No-one can beat us, because we are the best!

I am not always fighting though. During peacetime I usually play board games and help build things, especially roads and forts. Next time it is peacetime I will come and visit you.

I do enjoy being a part of the Roman Army because I get very good training and the wages are higher than any other job. It is hard work, but it is worth it in the end! I am fighting to protect my country and my family, and that makes me happy. Looking forward to seeing you soon, Love Claudius x

Art- Sketching using Perspective Sketch the colosseum! Here’s a handy step by step video to watch how to do it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZK-

kEnhp-8 , or follow the steps below.

Sketch the shape of a cylinder. Draw a line horizontally through the cylinder so that it is in half. Then quarter the cylinder with 2 more lines. Next, draw in the columns vertically. Some of the colosseum is broken, so look at how there appears to be cracks forming...

Use a black pen to draw over the horizontal lines...the sketch should appear to be more 3D now! Then use black pen to draw over the vertical columns.

After the columns, draw in the Roman arches. Look at the perspective- the arches are bigger in the middle compared to the sides.

Use pen to draw the cracked parts of the colosseum. Draw in squares on the top left-hand side.

When you pen lines have dried, rub the pencil lines out and draw in a ground line to show even more perspective. Using diagonal, light strokes, shade in the colosseum.

Fill in the Roman arches so that it looks more dramatic.

We’d love to see your art when it is finished! Send it to your teacher on class e-mail!

For this task, imagine you are a Roman Emperor. You must design and create a modern Roman sandal for you to wear when visiting Britain next Winter. They must fit your feet. You will need to think about the following: What materials would work well? How will you decorate it? How much do you need? How will you make this? Will the sandals be functional, decorative, or both? Will they be suitable? Will they be warm? Do they need to be warm? What is most important? Why? Here are some materials. You must decide which material would be most suitable. Not all of these will be suitable. Can you think of anymore? felt, cotton, raffia, string, wool, plastic, cardboard, paper, selection of old clothes which could be recycled, shoe laces
