This Supplement describes the procedure for using the COMFORT-MATIC electronically controlled manual gearbox.

For the correct use of the gearbox, it is essential to read this Supplement in full to find out at the outset which operations are correctand permissible.

For additional information, consult the Owner Handbook to which this Supplement is attached.

READY TO START

MANUAL MODE

IMPORTANT For the correct use of thesystem, only use your right foot only tooperate the pedals.

❒ Press the brake pedal.

❒ Start the engine.

❒ Push the gear lever towards + fig. 1 to engage first gear (if startingfrom N or R simply move the lever tothe central position) or R fig. 2 to en-gage reverse.

❒ Release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

❒ When driving, push the gear lever to-wards + fig. 1 to engage a higher gearor towards – fig. 1 to engage a low-er gear.

The vehicle is equipped with an electron-ically controlled manual gearbox knownas COMFORT-MATIC which allows twooperating modes: MANUAL and AUTO.

The gearbox consists of a conventionalmanual transmission equipped with a lever

fig. 1, to which an electronically-con-trolled hydraulic device that controls theclutch and engagement of the gears hasbeen added.

OPERATING MODE

The gearbox can work in two operatingmodes:

❒ the first is manual (MANUAL), wherethe driver decides directly when to shiftgear;

❒ the second fully automatic (AUTO),where the system decides when to shiftgear. The ECO function (Economy)can be used with this mode reducing fu-el consumption. To switch this functionon, press button E-fig. 4.

Select the gear and the operating modeMANUAL or AUTO) by operating thecontrol lever at any speed.

CONTROL LEVER

The control lever fig. 1, on the centretunnel is a floating multistable lever, i.e. itcan take up three stable positions andthree unstable positions.

The three stable positions correspond toneutral N-fig. 2, reverse R-fig. 2 and thecentral position between the unstable po-sitions (+) and (–) fig. 1.

The unstable positions, i.e. positions leftby the lever as soon as it is released, areupshift request (+), downshift request (–)and the automatic operating mode request(A/M) fig. 3.

AUTOMATIC MODE

IMPORTANT For the correct use of thesystem, it is advisable to use your rightfoot only to operate the pedals.

❒ Press the brake pedal.

❒ Start the engine.

❒ Push the gear lever to A/M fig. 3 to engage the automatic mode or to R-fig. 2 to engage reverse.

❒ Release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

Avoid keeping your hand onthe lever when you are not re-questing a gear shift or anAuto/Manual mode change.

The system returns to the manual modeby returning the lever to the A/M posi-tion.

With the vehicle at a standstill and the keyextrcted, the lever may be movedwith/without the brake pedal pressed. Thesystem does not carry out any action af-ter the lever has been moved and remainsin the gear memorized before the key wasremoved.

IMPORTANT With the engine running, abuzzer sounds to indicate errors betweenthe lever position and the gear effectivelyengaged until the inconsistency is resolved.

MANUAL OPERATION (MANUAL)

In this operating mode, the driver is re-sponsible for choosing the best gear ra-tio to engage, depending on vehicle usageconditions.

Proceed as follows to shift gear:

❒ move the lever to the + position fig. 1 to engage a higher gear;

or

❒ move the lever to the – position fig. 1to engage a lower gear.

The accelerator pedal need not be re-leased during the gear change.

The system will not allow the gear changeif the gear shift request could impair thecorrect operation of the engine and gear-box.

In this case, the system will notify the dri-ver that it is not possible to change gearaccompanied by a buzzer.

The system will shift down through thegears automatically when the engine isidling (e.g. during deceleration).

Automatic operation(AUTO - ECO)

The ECO function can only be activatedwith the automatic mode engaged.

The ECO function is turned on by press-ing button E - fig.4. After this function hasbeen activated, the display will show thegear engaged and the words AUTO andE (see next paragraph).

The ECO function activates the systemselecting the most suitable gear depend-ing on the speed of the vehicle, the enginespeed and the intensity with which the ac-celerator is pressed with fuel economy be-ing the main objective.

Where necessary (e.g. overtaking), thesystem will react to the accelerator be-ing pressed to the floor by shifting downthrough one or more gears in order to de-liver the power and torque required togive the vehicle the acceleration requiredby the driver (all this takes place in auto-matic mode, irrespective of whether theECO function is on or off).

AUTOMATIC OPERATION(AUTO)

To switch the automatic operation (AUTO) on/off, push the lever to theA/M fig. 3 position; activation will be sig-nalled by the display of the word AUTOfig. 5 and the gear engaged.

In AUTO mode the system will changegear depending on the speed of the vehi-cle, the engine speed and the intensity withwhich the accelerator pedal is pressed. Agear shift may be requested by operatingthe gear lever, but without necessarilyswitching this mode off: this function,known as ‘gear suggestion’, suspends theautomatic mode for the time required toselect the ratio requested by the driver.

INFORMATION ON DISPLAY

When the ignition key is turned to theMAR position, after about 1 second, thedisplay shows the gear engaged and thelast mode used (AUTO or MANUAL):

N = neutral;

1 = first gear;

2 = second gear;

3 = third gear;

4 = fourth gear;

5 = fifth gear;

6 = sixth gear;

R = reverse.

If the ECO function is used the display willshow the letter E (Economy) next thegear engaged fig. 6.

IMPORTANT If the display does not showthe gear engaged after 10 seconds with theignition key in MAR, turn the ignition toSTOP, wait for the display to turn off andthen repeat the manoeuvre. If the prob-lem persists, contact the Fiat Dealership.

ENGINE STARTING

The system permits engine start-up witha gear engaged and also with the gearboxin neutral (N); the brake pedal must al-ways be pressed with the gear engaged.

It is advisable to place the gear lever inneutral (N) before starting the engine.

After start-up:

❒ the gearbox automatically engages neu-tral (N)

❒ the lever remains in the same positionas the last time the engine was turnedoff

❒ the reconfigurable multifunction displayshows the letter (N) and an acousticsignal indicates any inconsistency be-tween the lever position and the gearengaged

❒ the gears that may be engaged are 1st,2nd or reverse (R), with the brake ped-al pressed.

IMPORTANT If start-up is requested withthe gearbox in a position other than Nand without the brake pedal pressed, dis-play shows a dedicated message see(“Warning lights and messages” para-graph). In this case, repeat the startingprocedures pressing the brake pedal.

If the engine does not startwith the gear engaged, a po-tentially hazardous situationbecause the gearbox has au-

tomatically shifted to neutral is indi-cated by a buzzer.

IMPORTANT If the starting request takesplace with the gearbox in failure condi-tions, carry out the “Delayed ignition”procedure (also see relevant messages):turn the key to the AVV position for atleast 7 seconds with the brake depressedand the engine will start. The system willremain in recovery mode (maximumspeed permitted: 3a, Automatic mode notavailable). If the engine does not start, con-tact a Fiat Dealership.

IMPORTANT When the driver’s door isopened, the system activates the hydraulicpart to prepare it for subsequent enginestart-up.

DRIVING OFF IN THE VEHICLE

Driving off in the vehicle is permitted in 1st

gear, 2nd gear (recommended on road sur-faces with poor grip) and reverse (R).

IMPORTANT It is advisable to use thehandbrake for hill starts on a steep gradi-ent.

To engage 1st gear

❒ press the brake pedal;

❒ with the lever in (N) or (R) move thelever to the middle position;

❒ with the lever already in the middle po-sition, move the lever toward + fig. 1;

❒ release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal (pressing the pedalquickly so that it reaches the end oftravel to allow a responsive take off).

To engage 2nd gear


❒ with the lever in (N) or (R) Fig. 2move the lever to the middle positionand then towards + fig. 1;

❒ with the lever already in the middle po-sition, move the lever twice toward +fig. 1;

❒ release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

For departures on a hill with a medium-steep gradient, it is advisable to use thehandbrake.

To engage reverse (R)


IMPORTANT If the vehicle is moving, therequest is accepted and carried out if thevehicle speed is less than 3 km/h within 1.5seconds of the request: if the request isnot implemented, the system will maintainthe gear engaged or if vehicle speed dropsbelow 10 km/h it will put the gearbox inneutral (N) and the manoeuvre must thenbe repeated.

❒ Shift the lever to (R) fig. 2;

❒ release the brake pedal and press theaccelerator pedal.

BUZZER WARNING

For safety reasons, a buzzer warningsounds when the vehicle is parked withthe gearbox in neutral (N) (the warningsounds when the ignition key is turned toSTOP);

With the vehicle at a standstill, the enginerunning and (1), (2) or (R) gear engaged,the system turns on the buzzer and au-tomatically shifts the gearbox to neutral(N) when:

❒ the accelerator and/or brake pedals arenot operated for at least 3 minutes;

❒ the brake pedal is pressed for longerthan 10 minutes;

❒ the driver’s door is opened and the ac-celerator and brake are not operatedfor at least 1.5 seconds;

❒ a fault has been detected in the gear-box.

PARKING THE VEHICLE

To park safely, it is essential to engage 1st

gear or reverse (R) gear with your footon the brake pedal. If parking on a slope,operate the brake pedal. It is also essen-tial to wait until the gear engaged disap-pears from the display before releasing thebrake pedal.

IMPORTANT NEVER leave your vehiclewith the gearbox in neutral (N).

GENERAL WARNINGS

❒ With the vehicle at a standstill and agear engaged, keep the brake pedalpressed until you decide to set off.Then release the brake and accelerategradually;

❒ when parked for long periods with theengine running, it is advisable to keepthe gearbox in (N);

❒ to safeguard clutch efficiency, do notuse the accelerator to keep the vehi-cle at a standstill (e.g.: parking on a hill);the clutch could be damaged by over-heating. Use the brake pedal insteadand operate the accelerator only whenyou are ready to set off;

❒ use second gear only when you needmore control of take-off during ma-noeuvres on surfaces with poor grip;

❒ if, with reverse (R) engaged, you needto engage first speed or vice versa, on-ly change gear when the vehicle hascome to a stop and the brake pedal ispressed;;

❒ although very inadvisable, if the vehi-cle is unexpectedly allowed to rolldownhill with the gearbox in neutral(N) the system will automatically en-gage the gear best suited to vehiclespeed when a gear shift is requested toallow drive to be correctly transmittedto the wheels;

❒ if necessary, gear changes can be madewith the engine off with the ignition inthe MAR position and the brakepressed. In this case, gear shifts must bemade allowing at least 5 minutes toelapse between one gear shift and thenext to safeguard the operation of thehydraulic system and the pump in par-ticular;

❒ fully depressing the accelerator pedalquickly activates a function that allowsa lively take off;

❒ during hill starts, accelerate graduallybut fully immediately after releasing thehandbrake or brake pedal to allow theengine to increase its rpm to a greaterextent and overcome higher gradientswith more torque.

WARNING LIGHTSAND MESSAGES

REDUCE GEAR CHANGES

The warning light comes on in the panel(together with a message in the display) tosignal the incorrect use of the gearbox bythe driver.

Incorrect use (by the driver) could auto-matically activate a procedure for pro-tecting the system.

MANUAL METHODUNAVAILABLE

The message appears in the display whenit is not possible to select MANUALmode with the engine running.

“COMFORT-MATIC”GEARBOX FAILURE(red)

When the ignition key is turnedto MAR, the warning light turns on andshould go off after a few seconds.

The warning light in the panel comes onflashing (together with a message in thedisplay and a buzzer) to indicate that thegearbox is faulty.

If the gearbox is faulty, con-tact a Fiat Dealership assoon as possible to checkthe system.

If the warning light (togetherwith the message in the dis-play) continues to remain onin the panel, go to a Fiat

Dealership.

Contact a Fiat Dealership ifthe message remains in thedisplay.

AUTOMATIC METHOD NOT AVAILABLE

The message appears in the display whenit is not possible to select AUTO modewith the engine running.

CLUTCH OVERTEMPERAT. SEE HANDBOOK

The message appears in the display to-gether with a buzzer when the clutchoverheats.

In this situation, limit take-off and gearshifts or if necessary park (turning off theengine) until conditions are optimum.

If the message still appears inthe display, contact a FiatDealership.

To safeguard clutch efficien-cy, do not use the acceleratorto keep the vehicle at a stand-still (e.g.: parking on a hill);

the clutch could be damaged by over-heating. Use the brake pedal insteadand operate the accelerator only whenyou are ready to set off.

Contact a Fiat Dealership ifthe messages remain in thedisplay.

IMPORTANT If start-up is requested withthe gearbox faulty, run the “Delayed ig-nition” procedure (see associated mes-sages): turn the key to the AVV positionfor at least 7 seconds with the brake de-pressed and the engine will start. The sys-tem will be in recovery mode (highest gearpermitted 3rd, automatic mode not avail-able). If the engine does not start, con-tact a Fiat Dealership.

IMPORTANT Messages are displayed on-ly if start-up takes place in a gear otherthan neutral (N).

DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL

The message is shown in the display to-gether with a buzzer during an attempt atstarting when the brake pedal is notpressed.

DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL- DELAYED IGNITION

The display shows these messages alter-nately and in sequence together with awarning buzzer when the system does notrecognise the brake pedal to be opera-tional during a starting attempt.

In these circumstances, turn the key to theAVV position for at least 7 seconds withthe brake depressed and the engine willstart. The system will be in recovery mode(maximum speed permitted: 3a).

GEAR UNAVAILABLE

This message appears in the display to-gether with a warning buzzer in the fol-lowing cases:

❒ when it is not possible to change geardue to a fault in the system;

or

❒ when, due a fault in the system, is is on-ly possible to engage 1st (1), 2nd (2), 3rd

(3) or reverse (R).

OPERATION NOT ADMISSIBLE

The message appears in the display to-gether with a warning buzzer when thesystem will not accept a gear change viathe control lever because certain condi-tions required for acceptance of the gearchange are missing.

DEPRESS BRAKE PEDAL &REPEAT OPERATION

The message appears in the display ac-companied, in some cases, by a warningbuzzer for safety reasons if you attemptto change gear without previously press-ing the brake pedal.

SET GEARBOX LEV. TO NEUTR.(neutral)

This message appears in the display to-gether with a warning buzzer when thesystem asks the driver to perform the ma-noeuvre.

When the gearbox is shifted to (N) themessage in the display should go off.

TOWING THE VEHICLE

Ensure the gearbox is in neutral (N) (bychecking that the vehicle moves whenpushed) and tow in the same way as a nor-mal vehicle with a manual gearbox (see in-structions in Owner Handbook).

If it is not possible to put the gearbox inneutral, do not tow the vehicle and con-tact a Fiat Dealership.

FUSE REPLACEMENT

For the location of the fuses, see the illustrations in the paragraph “Fuse replacement”in the “In an emergency” section of the Owner Handbook.

CHECKING FLUID LEVELS

COMFORT-MATIC GEARBOX HYDRAULIC ACTIVATION SYSTEM FLUID

To check the gearbox oil level and to check/change the hydraulic clutch operating system fluid, contact only a Fiat Dealership.

Used gearbox oil contains substances that are hazardous for the environment. It isadvisable to have the oil changed by a Fiat Dealership where used oil will be dis-

posed of according to the law.

SERVICE SCHEDULED

The Service Schedule, in addition to all of the operations already described (see Owner Handbook, “Maintenance and care” chap-ter), also includes the checks/replacements listed in the table below:
