This Sunday, February 24, our Special Needs Ministry, Wylie Stars, will be spotlighted during
both Worship Services.
Wylie Stars is a ministry that began at Wylie United last March, under the
direction of Marvel Peterson. It is designed to reach out to the families of
special needs adults who have aged out of the school system. The special
need family member has an evening of developing social skills and fun with
friends. The parents gets a break once a month. There is no charge to the
family.
Wylie Stars meets on the third Friday of every month from 6pm - 9pm. The
success of the program depends on the volunteers! If you are interested in
helping with Wylie Stars, please contact Marvel at 972-914-9534 or
This Sunday there will be a video presentation and special music provided
by participants from The Coventry Reserve, which is a day program for
special needs adults, located in St. Paul, Texas.

TO: Wylie United REFERENCE: Important Staff News It is with gratitude and more than a little sadness that we announce the
retirement of Scott Wilson. To say that Scott has been a blessing is quite
an understatement. Scott has spent more than 20 years as Music Director
with Wylie United and 16 years prior to that in other churches. He and
Pam have been anticipating this move for a few years. Now with family
changes, not the least of which is that out-of-state grandchild, they are
ready to take the leap! He plans to finish his ministry with us after the
Advent and Easter season on May 5th, 2019. So, any of you former choir
members who wish to enjoy one last singing season with Scott – it’s not
too late! We look forward to celebrating Scott and his family’s time with
us on May 5th.
In a related note, Patrick McGarity, faithful leader of our praise band,
Filthy Rags, is stepping down as Praise Band coordinator. Patrick also
cites family time is a factor in his decision. We are fortunate in that he
loves performing with the Rags, as he has since their inception, and will
continue to do so on a somewhat limited basis. Thank you, Patrick! We
will celebrate Patrick with a pot luck meal after the second service
on March 3.
Reminders Page 4
The finance team would like to thank each of you who have taken the time to turn in your 2019 pledge commitments. We are in the last steps of finalizing the 2019 budget and bringing it to a vote. Currently we are about 20 pledge cards short of last year’s number. Our church family and outreach programs rely on you and your giving. Please contact Vickie Jones, our Financial Administrator, if you have any questions or would like a pledge card mailed to you. There are cards available in the back of the worship center and on the Welcome table, also. Again, if you have already turned in your pledge card… THANK YOU. If not, please find in your heart to pledge.

United Methodist Men Page 7
“Come and See” Our first Gathering of 2019 occurred the evening of February 10th. Fourteen men came together to lift up joys and concerns, to share prayer and a devotional, and to discuss what the Lord has in store for us in 2019. Our “theme” for the year is to become more “invitational” as individuals and as a group of men who love the Lord. Jesus showed us how to be invitational by the calling of Simon and Andrew (Matt. 4:18-20) when he said, “Come, follow me and I will send you out to fish for people”. The same words, “Follow me”, were spoken to Matthew (Matt. 9:9), to Levi (Mark 2:13-14) and to Philip (John 1:43). Philip then invited Nathaniel (John 1:46) with the words, “Come and see”. In John 4:27-30 we learn that the Samaritan woman at the well invited others to “Come, see a man….”. The Bible provides us with many other examples of being invitational. Jesus was not bashful about this. He even invited himself to Zacchaeus’ home (Luke 19:2-5)! Perhaps Jesus’ greatest invitation was extended to Peter when He asked him three times, “Do you love me?”, followed by “Feed my lambs”, “Take care of my sheep”, “Feed my sheep”, and “Follow me!” (John 21:15-19). Brothers, each of you have a standing cordial invitation to “Come and See”, not to come and see us… but to come and see Jesus! He is at work amongst us by our fellowship, by our shared prayers, by our activities and by our shared love for Him and for each other. With this invitation extended, no doubt there are some of you who would prefer a personal invitation. It is our goal to do that, but, if we don’t connect please seek us out. Our Board members are: Larry Johnson (President); Mark Robinson (VP); Steve Oliver (Treasurer); George Whitley (Membership); and Mitch Swan (Recorder). We typically Gather the 2nd Sunday evening of each month, 7pm, Room 204, at the church for 1 hour. Activities vary during the year. Our upcoming activity is Shrove Tuesday, March 5th, 5pm, in the church kitchen, at which time the pancake flipping will begin. Come and See!
Relay for Life Page 8
It is that time of the year to start thinking about
joining our Relay for Life team! Relay for Life is
an event sponsored by the American Cancer
Society where we raise money to go towards
fighting for a cure! Cancer is personal. We have
members among us celebrating clear scans as
others anxiously continue to fight. We all have
seen the ugliness and the aftermath of what Cancer does to families.
Cancer has touched all of us in some way and we want to stop this disease
in its tracks. We’ll spend the next few months fundraising for the American
Cancer Society. Then, on the day of the event, we’ll honor the lives lost to
cancer, celebrate survivors, and support the caregivers who so selflessly
help others. We will do this by walking as a team!
To sign up Google “Relay for Life of NE Communities”, then click on the purple box that says “JOIN this RELAY.” Click on create an account. If you have been on our team in the past then just sign in using your email and password. Look for the team “Wylie United Methodist Church and Friends.”
We would love to have each and every family sign up to help support our team.
The event will take place Saturday May 11, 2019, at Murphy Central Park Amphitheater from 4pm to 10pm.
Our next team fundraiser spirit night is Thursday, February 28, from 5-9pm at Napoli’s Italian Restaurant in Wylie, 701 Hwy 78, Wylie, come join in the fun!
Together, we’ll be part of making a difference in this important cause.

I have had the grand pleasure to meet some of the finest people here. James Ramsey

Wylie United Methodist Women Welcomed Rebecca Jowers to Wylie United Church
Rebecca Jowers, Founder and Executive Director
of Poeima Foundation presented “Human Trafficking
101” sponsored by Wylie United Methodist Women to an
audience of approximately 40 on Sunday, February 17th.
The Mission of the Foundation is to educate the public
and bring awareness to the 2nd largest criminal activity
in the world only behind drug dealing and to prevent
human trafficking and other forms of sexual exploita-
tion. They also provide a safe house for victims of
human trafficking.
Her message included information of how their Foundation helps human
trafficking survivors begin a new life with God’s love and support. Ms. Jowers also
shared research of basic information concerning how children are recruited into
the system, their vulnerabilities and statistics on frightening numbers of thousands
of missing children in Texas alone, many of them identified as human trafficking
victims. She shared personal stories (without any identifying information) of many
human trafficking victims their Foundation has helped… from Garland, Rockwall,
Allen and Dallas. She was well received and stayed after answering many questions
from parents and grandparents of ways to protect their children.
There is information on what human
trafficking is, facts and statistics for our
country, state and community, as well as, how
to recognize a victim. The Foundation also has
many volunteering opportunities available and
if anyone is interested in joining this ministry
they are encouraged to contact the Foundation
through their website,
or by email at
Volunteer Opportunities Inside & Outside! Page 13
Would you enjoy the opportunity to serve your
church family and fellowship with them at the
same time? Do you like making people happy?
If you do, come serve coffee and donuts with
us! Volunteers are needed to help with Sunday
morning coffee and donut service once or twice
a month for an hour. This light duty service
opportunity involves setting up, maintaining the service area during Sunday morning
worship, or cleaning up. Sign up at www.wylieumc.org under the Serve tab.
