Site of the island’s former capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Town of St. George in the East End is rich with British colonial history and culture. You’ll also discover many natural attractions, including Blue Hole Park and the Crystal Caves of Bermuda.

Exploring with Dr. Ian Walker // Principal Curator, Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo

“Our mission is to inspire an appreciation for our environment,” says Dr. Ian Walker, Principal Curator for the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo (BAMZ) in Flatts Village. “We want to ensure that every young person and adult understands that it’s a not a given – that our ecosystem is fragile, and we all need to do our part to help protect it.”

For Walker, that means running BAMZ and spearheading the conservation and research programmes of the Bermuda Zoological Society, including efforts to bolster populations of endangered cahows (a pelagic seabird once believed to be extinct) and restore endemic species of plants on nearby Trunk Island. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have

Out here, a small population of 65,000 residents makes for a strong neighbourhood identity. Each community brings with it a unique blend of cultures all its own, and a local character to match. Whether it’s the history-rich East End, still stamped by its colonial past; the sophisticated and global capital, City of Hamilton, at the centre; or popular sightseeing hub and maritime vestige, the West End, Bermuda is easy to get to, but a world away.

time to enjoy the very environment he’s tasked with protecting. “One of my favourite places is Cooper’s Island,” says Walker of the 12-acre nature reserve located in St. David’s.

“A lot of people just stop at Clearwater, which is one of the island’s most beautiful beaches,” he says, “but if you take the time to walk past the gate and go deep into the reserve, there’s so much pristine natural beauty to explore.” It’s a place Walker likes to visit during the day before eating dinner at Blackbeard’s Hideout, a restaurant on the island’s eastern tip.

“The food is always amazing,” says Walker, “and the sunset view is the very best in Bermuda.”

Central Bermuda is home to the capital, City of Hamilton, a harbour town known for its blend of global sophistication and local flavour. Enjoy dining, shopping, nightlife and the island’s most cosmopolitan culture, and find great beaches, gardens and golf nearby.

Exploring with Nzingha Ming // Gallery Director, Bermuda Society of Arts

A hub for sightseeing, shopping and entertainment, the historic Royal Naval Dockyard is one of Bermuda’s most popular destinations. Also in the West End, you’ll find many of the renowned South Shore highlights including Horseshoe Bay, Warwick Long Bay and Gibbs Hill Lighthouse.

Exploring with Jessie Seymour // Lead Singer, The Big Chill

The City of Hamilton is home to more than the island’s largest concentration of shops and restaurants. As the capital of Bermuda since 1815, the city is one of the island’s main cultural hubs, where galleries like the Bermuda Society of Arts (BSOA) feature an ever-changing lineup of locally created artwork.

“This is the people’s gallery,” says Gallery Director Nzingha Ming. “So if you’re trying to expose yourself to the arts or if you’re an artist who’s ready to showcase your work, the BSOA is here to provide you with a welcoming space.”

Located on the second floor of the Hamilton City Hall & Arts Centre,

When Jessie Seymour was tapped to be the lead vocalist for one of Bermuda’s biggest live music acts, it was a calling that was years in the making.

“Everybody in my family sings,” says 30-year-old Seymour, whose father was a musician in a popular island band during the 1970s and whose mother watched him sing in the First Church of God choir as a child.

These days, Seymour has traded gospel hymns for pop hits and soul classics since his band – a prolific trio called The Big Chill – began playing in venues across the island.

“I love making music,” says Seymour, who performs alongside Tony Brannon on electric and acoustic guitar and D.J. Felix Tod.

One of his favourite spots to play is Rum Bum Beach Bar, an open-air bar and restaurant at Horseshoe Bay Beach, one of the only bars in Bermuda where folks can eat food, listen to music and drink cocktails, sandy toes and all. “It’s a no-shoes, no-shirt, no-problem kind of place,” says Seymour.

His other favourite spot on the West End?

“You’ve got to get a shrimp dinner at Woody’s,” he says. “There’s no place better.”

the BSOA commonly showcases invitational exhibits, when seasoned artists show their works alongside

first-timers. It proudly displays the artwork of local school children,

which is one of the reasons it attracts such a diverse audience.

“I think every Bermudian has been here at least once,” says Ming.

So where else does she get inspiration?

“The Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art is one of my favourite buildings housing art right now,” says Ming of the purpose-built gallery, which is located in the Bermuda Botanical Gardens and features 19th century masters such as Winslow Homer and Georgia O’Keeffe. “The fact that you can witness the history of Bermuda art all in one building is incredibly special.”

When Earth Day first took place on April 22, 1970, it set out to be the world’s biggest day of civic action, when volunteers plant trees, clean up their communities or write their politicians to call for environmental protection. Fifty years on, more than a billion people in over 193 countries observe it – including Bermuda, where members of Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB) have worked to protect the island’s natural environment since 1964.

Cleaning Up Tons“Our mission is to encourage individuals to take greater responsibility in eliminating waste and reducing litter in Bermuda,” says KBB Executive Director Anne Hyde. “We feel it’s so important because the island’s biggest asset is really its God-given beauty and if we don’t work actively to preserve that, it could quickly go away.”

Last year, KBB cleaned up 66,500 pounds of litter and illegal dumping with help from hundreds of dedicated volunteers who gave 6,590 hours. While its monthly cleanups are popular with locals and eco-minded tourists alike, no event is as big as its island-wide Earth Day cleanup.

“We had more than 700 volunteers for the event last year,” says Hyde, who anticipates an even bigger turnout in 2020.

The good news is that KBB doesn’t have to fight the ongoing environmental battle alone.

“We’re totally supportive of the work that our sister organisations are doing,” she says. “Particularly the National Trust and the Bermuda Zoological Society, which are leading the charge to help preserve our natural spaces.”

Visitors and locals can participate in the Earth Day cleanup on April 25 from 9 am-12 pm. Find out more by visiting kbb.bm.

Cultivating ConservationAnother ambitious nonprofit, the Bermuda Climate Action Network, aims to plant 2,020 trees this year to help mark Earth Day’s 50th-anniversary year. They planted over 50 in January and schools like Warwick Academy have been busy planting edible fruit trees on primary-school campuses across the island.

Terrestrial Conservation Officer Jeremy Medeiros works with the Bermuda Zoological Society to improve natural habitats. Combined with local scientists’ efforts to bolster populations of endemic plants and species on Nonsuch and Trunk Islands, the culture of environmental awareness is like no other.

“It’s amazing,” says Hyde. “The sense of volunteerism in Bermuda is so very strong and I’m grateful for all of the hard work everyone gives to help protect our community.”

Like a TriathleteHow to Train

When two-time Olympian and ITU World Champion Flora Duffy competed in her first triathlon at the age of seven, the Bermudian triathlete knew she was hooked.

“That was it,” says 30-year-old Duffy, who currently splits her time between Boulder, Colorado and Stellenbosch, South Africa when she’s not visiting friends and family in Bermuda. “The rest of my childhood was spent entering every running, cycling and swimming race on the island,” she says. “With a perfect year-round climate, there really couldn’t be a better place to grow up racing.”

And fortunately for Duffy, Bermuda has become a major player in the international triathlon circuit since the island first hosted a leg of the ITU World Triathlon Series in 2018 – a race she handily won. Bermuda will host the race this year on April 18th, as well as the ITU Grand Finals in 2021. The race attracts amateurs and elite athletes alike.

“Winning that race was a pretty big moment for me,” says Duffy, who finished a full two minutes ahead of Great Britain’s Vicky Holland and the U.S.’s Katie Zaferes. “I was most proud of how the community came together to support a fellow Bermudian in such a powerful and passionate way.”

So how do you train like a true triathlete during your visit to Bermuda? Take some tips from Flora Duffy herself, who looks forward to hitting the pavement and the pool when she’s here this April.

Swim Shelly Bay

When Duffy needs a controlled environment to measure distance or practice breaths, she can often be found doing laps at Bermuda’s National Sports Centre, a gleaming Olympic-worthy facility in Devonshire Parish. But when she wants to hit the open water, her first choice is Shelly Bay, a calm cove on Bermuda’s North Shore where she commonly trains. “A big fear for a lot of people getting into triathlon is swimming in open water,” she says, “but the more you can be exposed to it, the more comfortable you’ll be in that sort of surrounding.” And since Shelly Bay is protected from open ocean swells, it’s a perfect place to train for beginners and pros alike. “It stays shallow for quite a long way,” she says. “Plus, you’ll never get a lot of chop like you can on the South Shore.”

Bike Bermuda’s Hills

“The whole island is rolling,” says Duffy, “so wherever you ride is going to be challenging.” Some of her favourite climbs?

“A great ride is up Lighthouse Hill heading to Gibbs Hill Lighthouse in Southampton,” she says. “And the two hills on either side of the Fairmont Southampton are quite a challenge if you went up one side and down the other, then kept repeating the ride up and down.”

And while there are plenty of climbs to test the fittest of riders, one of Duffy’s most beloved routes is a loop she takes from her house in Paget Parish through the Town of St. George on Bermuda’s East End.

“You’re right next to the ocean for most of the time and you pass by all of these beautiful coastal cottages,” she says. “It’s one of the island’s prettiest rides.”

Run the Railway Trail

Once home to a working rail line that ran across the island from 1931 to 1948, the Railway Trail is now a scenic pedestrian and bicycle path featuring 18 of its original 21 miles, which are open to the public.

“I do most of my running on the trail,” says Duffy, who particularly loves the section between Coney Island and Crawl Hill in Hamilton Parish, which features a 740-foot-long footbridge that crosses Bailey’s Bay.

Another favourite route of hers is the stretch of South Road between Church Bay and Warwick Long Bay, with its unending views of the turquoise Atlantic Ocean and wide grassy sidewalks so you can avoid any vehicular traffic.

“Another good way to do that is to start your run first thing in the morning,” she says of avoiding cars. “That, and Bermuda at sunrise is so very peaceful.”

“As a kid, everyone learned how to make kites with brown paper bags and fennel sticks,” says former Parliament member Jeff Sousa, who now runs a landscaping business. “And if you were really good, you’d get an old sheet from Granny to make the tail.”

Meant to symbolise Christ’s ascension to heaven, colourful kites are flown across the island during Easter weekend. One of the best places to spot them is over Horseshoe Bay Beach, where hundreds of people gather each year to kick off the festive holiday.

“It’s truly a sight to see,” says Sousa, who remembers flying his father’s six-foot-long wooden kite as a child.

Celebrating the Island’s BountyKites are just one of many events islanders look forward to in spring – like the Bermuda Agricultural Show (commonly referred to as the Ag Show) in April, which celebrates its 80th anniversary this year. Meant to commemorate the island’s agrarian roots, the Ag Show is a three-day, family-friendly exhibition where Bermuda’s animal, fruit and vegetable farmers bring their best for all to see. With chickens, pigs, goats and locally grown fruits and vegetables of all kinds, the Ag Show is both a highlight of Bermuda’s spring calendar and a tip of the hat to the island’s beginnings as an agricultural exporter.

“You have to remember, where you now see golf courses and condominiums was once working vegetable farms and fields of flowers,” says Sousa. “And most of what was grown here was bound for the eastern seaboard of the United States.”

That includes Bermuda’s very own Easter lilies, one of the island’s main exports in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Bermuda’s iconic white flowers are no longer a key export, they do still get sent abroad – namely, to the Queen of England. During Easter week, the governor hand-picks a bunch of the blooms from a local farm, and sends them to Buckingham Palace on an evening flight so they arrive just in time for Good Friday.

“Mark Twain said it best,” says Sousa of the famed American author who often visited the island during the spring months. “You can go to heaven if you want, but I’d rather stay in Bermuda.”

From flowering freesias to colourful kites, Bermuda’s springtime traditions are an integral part of its rich island culture. But more than anything, springtime in Bermuda is all about family, and no one island tradition is as beloved as flying a kite on Good Friday.

Spring Awakening

Party Like the PortugueseBermuda’s diverse roots include distinct ties to African, English and Portuguese ancestry – the latter of which immerses the island in cultural activities every spring.

Perhaps the biggest celebration of the island’s Portuguese heritage is

the Santo Cristo dos Milagres Festival, a festive parade from St. Theresa’s Cathedral – home of the island’s largest Catholic congregation – through the flower-lined streets of Hamilton.

This year’s festival takes place on May 17 and, as always, features traditional Portuguese music, dance and food (like sweet malasadas and red bean soup with spicy chorizo).

Fishcakes and Buns and Pie, Oh My!

From deep-fried favourites to fresh-baked breads, come take a bite out of Bermuda’s traditional springtime cuisine.

When Karen Gilbert opened her roadside food truck in 1986, she had no clue her codfish cakes would be among the most beloved in Bermuda. Her secret ingredient?

“You’ve got to put love in them,” jokes Gilbert, whose blue truck, Karen’s Lunch Wagon, can be found along North Shore Road in Pembroke Parish.

It helps that her fishcakes feature a healthy portion of salted cod, which she says cooks often skimp on.

“Otherwise they’d just be potato cakes,” she says. “It’s all about the fish.”

A hearty Bermuda staple commonly served on a cinnamon-raisin hot cross bun, the cakes are one of many foods islanders eat during spring holidays.

An odd combination, maybe, but sweet-and-savoury flavours are prevalent in plenty of island cuisine, like buttery cassava pie, which is also eaten around Easter and baked in homes across Bermuda.

“My daughter’s cassava pies are even better than my mama’s” says Gilbert, “and my mama gave her the recipe!”

No matter whose kitchens these trio of traditional foods come from, finding an authentic taste of Bermuda is as easy as taking your first bite.

What You’re Eating:Hot Cross BunsThe Recipe: With their symbolic crosses, these sweet cinnamon-raisin rolls may not be unique to Bermuda, but island bakers have perfected the recipe over the years. In addition to common ingredients like flour, eggs, brown sugar, yeast and unsalted butter, Bermuda’s buns feature an array of spices, including cinnamon and allspice, plus a large heaping of plump raisins to sweeten them even more. Eaten at breakfast with a dollop of butter or during the day with a fried fishcake sandwiched between its halves, hot cross buns are a must-have for any Good Friday or Easter weekend gathering.

Buy it Here: In addition to fresh-baked cinnamon buns, spicy gingerbread and treats galore, Sweet SAAK Bakery in St. George’s is one of the best places on the East End to get traditional hot cross buns. Owned by pastry chef Kamilah Cannonier, this family-run bakery also makes chocolate fudge on Saturdays, which typically sells out in 48 hours.

Cassava PieThe Recipe: Traditionally eaten at Christmas, Easter and other major holidays, cassava pie is a Bermudian staple. More of a savoury cake than an actual pie, it’s made with grated cassava – a starchy root vegetable akin to yucca – and mixed with butter, sugar, eggs and spices, including nutmeg, allspice, salt and a pinch of vanilla. For a heartier dish, many islanders add diced boneless chicken thighs or even ground beef, but for a taste of the original, keep your eyes peeled for a plain pie that features the nutty flavour of the vegetable itself.

Buy it Here: Some of Bermuda’s best cassava pies are baked in home kitchens across the island, but a handful of restaurants and grocery stores will stock their own versions during the spring and winter months. In the City of Hamilton, try Crow Lane Bakery, which sells both chicken and plain varieties from its Church Street location.

Codfish CakesThe Recipe: Traditionally served on a hot cross bun over Easter weekend with tartar or hot sauce, codfish cakes are also eaten year-round, since the salted, dried fish is an ever-present ingredient in much of Bermudian cuisine (like the island’s codfish breakfast, typically served with bananas, boiled eggs and avocado on Sunday mornings). Recipes vary wildy, but most include salted cod, potatoes and chopped onions seasoned with thyme, salt, pepper and parsley (diced chili peppers are also a popular addition). The mixture is then combined with eggs, rolled in flour and deep-fried until golden brown. Beware: The question of whose fishcakes are the best is a local debate that could last for days.

Buy it Here: You’ll need wheels to find Karen’s Lunch Wagon, a bright blue food truck that’s parked along North Shore Road in Pembroke Parish. The popular roadside joint sits just east of the Black Watch Pass roundabout and it’s where Karen Gilbert herself fries up some of the island’s most popular codfish cakes.
