Tobacco use, including cigarettes is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S.
Public understanding of the risks of cigarettes has grown, but people (especially adolescents) are beginning to use other products instead.
Tobacco products are prohibited for sale to people under 18
Starting in 2014 “tobacco substitutes” are also prohibited
This includes e-cigarettes
Frequently sold in packaging that appeals to kids, resembling candies or beverages
Electronically heats up water with other chemicals into a vapor that the user inhales “Vape juice” almost always contains nicotine
Also commonly contains flavoring
Sometimes contains other drugs such as THC (The main active ingredient in marijuana)
Advertised as alternative to smoking

FDA began regulation in 2016

“Juuling” is another word for vaping, used as a marketing tool
80% of youth or more believe that e-cigarettes do not cause “great risk of harm.”
Majority of e-cigarette users also use tobacco cigarettes.
Youth who use e-cigarettes are more likely to later use tobacco cigarettes
Vapor contains low levels of heavy metals and carcinogens
Vapor can lead to inflammation and toxicity in the lungs
Some flavors, like cinnamon or tobacco, cause additional stress
E-Cigarette trend of “dripping” the vape liquid directly onto the heating coil causes even greater risks with higher concentrations of nicotine and carcinogens.
No matter the source, nicotine is highly addictive and toxic
