CONJUNCTIONS

Conjunctions link parts of a sentence.

Conjunctions work inside a sentence to link clauses together.

When I opened the window, a bird flew in!Conjunction

The conjunction when connects the two clauses: I opened the window and a bird flew in

They closed the curtains as it was getting late.Conjunction

The conjunction as connects the two clauses: They closed the curtains and it was getting late

Although he felt angry, his voice remained calm.Conjunction

Notice how a conjunction doesn’t have to be placed between the clauses.

Brian went for walks and he swam in the sea.Conjunction

and is a conjunction. It links clauses inside a sentence

Brian went for walks. And he swam in the sea.

Conjunctions do not usually make a link between sentences.

I was very tried. So I went to bed early.

Words which work between one sentence and another are called SENTENCE (OR CONJUNCTIVE) ADVERBS.

Linda enjoyed the movie. However, Sam did not.Sentence Adverb

The sentence adverb however connects the two sentences by contrasting them.

There are different types of sentence adverbs.

The alarm clock had broken. Consequently, Harriet did not get up in time to have breakfast.

Sentence Adverb

The sentence adverb consequently connects the two sentences through reason (broken clock)

and result (missed breakfast)

The room was clean. Moreover, the bed had been made.

Sentence Adverb

moreover is a sentence adverb. It links two sentences.

moreover is not used to make a link inside a sentence.

The room was clean moreover, the bed had been made.

The room was clean; moreover, the bed had been made.

Sentence Adverb

Sentence Adverbs can be used after a semi-colon to link two related clauses.

Conjunctions don’t usually work in the same way

The room was clean; and the bed had been made.
