Race reports/Upcoming race information

ANNEX II: TERMS OF REFERENCE Race Report: Wally Hayward 42.2 km (1 May 2018) – Gustav Brink

Separate start for walkers? No. This meant I never had an idea as to who my competitors were, and it was only around 38 km that I heard for the first time that I was the first walker. (0/5)

Separate start for 21/42? No. I saw at least 4 walkers ahead of me at the start, but I saw several more that had finished ahead of me, yet whom I never saw at the start. I still have no idea who of those ahead of me did the 10 or the 21, and I have no idea what my final position was. (0/5)

Prize money for walkers: First three, as well as age category prizes. (5/5)

Separate results for walkers: No, despite contacting the race organisers beforehand and specific-ally requesting separate results (0/5)

Start: Barriers used to ensure everybody filled up from the back. In theory, a good idea. In practice, it simply did not work. First of all, there was at least 1.5 metres of road on either side of the barriers, which could have accommodated a lot of athletes. When you make the mistake of letting the 21 and 42 start at the same time, with an estimate 8,500 athletes, you need all the space you can get. Since everybody had to cross the starting time mat, everybody had to squash into the width of the mat. Perhaps the width of the mat really needs to be investigated and the full width of the road be used as a minimum. Then, about 5 minutes before the start, somebody (athletes) succeeded in re-moving a significant part of the barriers and suddenly we had several hundred, if not a thousand, runners pushing in near the front, which really disadvantaged everybody else. If you want to use barriers, do it in a way that athletes cannot simply remove it at will. Place barriers on the sides at the back so that people cannot walk next to the starting block in the first place. I was at the start more than 35 minutes before starting time and had to stand nearly 50 metres behind the start, only to have a thousand people that came later, push in at the front. Not acceptable.  In my opinion, the start was really very poorly done. Very poor (1/5)

Route: Other than a few hills close the start (and that felt like mountains on the second lap), this was a really nice route for a walker. Some uphills, some nice and long downhills, most of the time more than enough space for athletes and traffic. None of the hills were so steep that a walker had to lose form or rhythm. One of the best walking routes I have done in quite some time. Around 300 or so metres of grass at the end, but at least, for once, this was even grass and not uneven as we’ve experienced in several other races, so this did not bother me. Excellent (5/5) Marshalling: Marshalls at most intersections, but traffic did not always abide, especially the big crossing less than 1 km from the start. As we approached the 41km, marshals stopped the athletes to let the traffic pass (which is understandable). However, the athletes around me shouted to the marshals that the first walker (me!) was coming through and the marshals and traffic police immedi-ately stopped the cars again. That was wonderful and so different to what has happened at a num-ber of races in the past. Excellent (5/5)

Water points: The first water point was an absolute mess, which could have been addressed if it served athletes on both sides of the road. Only 3 km into a race, with 8,500 athletes, and with not enough helpers to start with, clearly calls for a problem. While the water points were generally well stocked with more than just Coke and water, there were clearly not enough helpers and you had to often fight your way through the other athletes, come to a complete stop and help yourself, as the helpers simply could not cope. At one water point runners were even queuing, waiting for the help-ers to pour the Coke. This is just not acceptable. Also, for a walker, rhythm is everything. So, to have to break my rhythm at least 5 or 6 times to get water or Coke really hampered me and cost me a lot of time. Poor (2/5) Access and parking: More than adequate parking, both in car parks and in the streets. Very good (4/5)

Personal experience: We had fantastic weather for the first half, with the orange orb of the sun right in front of us as we went east around 2 km into the race. Rising through the branches of the trees it was surreal and so, so beautiful. I managed a (for me) good style and felt that I was making good progress in that regard, even though I have so much more to learn. Many runners, especially after the first 15 km or so, were commenting on the fact that I was keeping up with them. Around 15 km I caught up with Hudsy, who was doing the 21 km, and we walked and chatted for the next few kilometres until I went ahead around 19 km. Soon after that I caught up with another walker from PMWC, who was very relieved when he heard I was doing the 42. The second half was more difficult, and it really felt as though the hills had suddenly become mountains. Around 25 km my legs warned me for the first time that they were not used to the distance and my times started slowing. At 30 km my legs gave away for the first time, with me nearly falling down. It also started getting warmer and I contemplated whether a 6 am start would not have been better for the 42. At around 32 km I sud-denly met up with an old running friend from many years back, and we walked/ran the rest of the distance together, reminiscing about the past. This made a huge difference, even though my times kept getting slower and slower. By 40 km I knew I would not make my target time and the challenge was on to simply complete my first ever 42 km as a walker (I’ve done many, many of them as a run-ner). I was ready when we got to the final hill that led to 41 km, but I underestimated it by maybe 5 metres and very nearly came to a complete stop, really having to dig deep to get the motivation for the few remaining uphill meters. Just around the corner there was an athlete in problems, lying against a tree trunk, and with a few other athletes attending to him. Just about a minute later, an ambulance came charging towards him, so clearly the message was relayed. I was very relieved to get to the turnoff into onto the rugby field. Lots of support from the crowd, not only on the track, but also the last kilometre or so on the road. Really a good race for me, but very tough. I was simply not fit enough for the 42 and the problems at the start and the water points really cost me too much time. Very good (4/5)

Training/Health snippets

Water is an important structural component of skin cartilage, tissues and organs. For human beings, every part of the body is dependent on water. Our body comprises about 75% water: the brain has 85%, blood is 90%, muscles are 75%, kidney is 82% and bones are 22% water. The functions of our glands and organs will eventually deteriorate if they are not nourished with good, clean water.

The average adult loses about 2.5 litres water daily through perspiration, breathing and elimination. Symptoms of the body’s deterioration begin to appear when the body loses 5% of its total water volume. In a healthy adult, this is seen as fatigue and general discomfort, whereas for an infant, it can be dehydrating. In an elderly person, a 5% water loss causes the body chemistry to become abnormal, especially if the percentage of electrolytes is overbalanced with sodium. One can usually see symptoms of aging, such as wrinkles, lethargy and even disorientation. Continuous water loss over time will speed up aging as well as increase risks of diseases.

If your body is not sufficiently hydrated, the cells will draw water from your bloodstream, which will make your heart work harder. At the same time, the kidneys cannot purify blood effectively. When this happens, some of the kidney's workload is passed on to the liver and other organs, which may cause them to be severely stressed. Additionally, you may develop a number of minor health conditions such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, acne, nosebleeds, urinary tract infection, coughs, sneezing, sinus pressure, and headaches.

So, how much water is enough for you? The minimum amount of water you need depends on your body weight. A more accurate calculation is to drink an ounce of water for every two pounds of body weight.

Lyk hy soos 'n skelm?  - Maak hy ten minste R56,000.00 per jaar?  Sy moet weet of hy JA of NEE gesê het vir drugs. Ook of hy JA of NEE sê vir los werkies soos huis werk?

Buitekant .  .  . ek dink een of ander soort plastiese operasie- Die't, jy weet, haar hare.  Ek dink miskien blou

Toe, onverwags, in ‘n oomblik kry ek ‘n gewaarwording.  Dis moeilik om te beskryf, want dit was nie ‘n droom of ‘n visioen nie.  Plomps! Party kry sommer ‘n pot vol!  “Ons gaan ‘n skildery van Jesus maak.”  Sê hy. Toe is dit my beurt. ‘n Druppeltjie wit! Tipies. ………
