Although this article normally appears first

in each ―Digest,‖ I usually write it last, after

I have written several of the other articles

that appear within. This month is no excep-

tion.

What struck me as I was composing some of

the other articles is this: how full of activities

(and opportunities) May is. One would think

that, after Easter, it is time to settle down

into a much slower pace. However, after

you read through this issue, you will be re-

minded, as was I, that the life and vibrancy

of the church goes on because we have the

GOOD NEWS to share. We are ―Easter

people,‖ letting the joy of the resurrection

permeate every day of the year and fill each

one with the news that this life can be a fore-

taste of the feast to come.

Whether your ―cup of tea‖ is singing, pray-

ing, serving others, Christian education,

rejoice in your presence, we need you as part

MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day is May 9th. (Men—don’t

forget!)

What better way to honor mom than to

have the whole family at worship that Sun-

day? Before you figure out what you are

doing to celebrate the day, place one of the morning services

on your calendar as the way you will begin that day. God

bless you, mom!

SPECIAL ASCENSION SERVICE

At the request of the West Berks Mis-

sion District, Robeson Lutheran Church

will be hosting the district Ascension

Service this year. This will occur on

Thursday, May 13th at 7:30 p.m. Since

it does not fall on a Sunday, we often

forget about the importance of Ascen-

sion Day, even though every time we

say the creed, we reaffirm that Jesus ―ascended into heaven.‖

Ascension Day is the last time Jesus’ earthly followers ever

saw him as the risen Christ. Before he left their sight, he

gave them the Great Commission, to go, teach and baptize in

all the world. We still live by that command. In fact, it is the

central reason for being that the church has.

We urge you to be a part of this celebration, which will in-

clude Holy Communion. A reception will follow the service

in Hoeffer Hall.

HEALING SERVICE

A reminder: the May Healing Service will be held on May

23rd at approximately 11:30 a.m. in the old parlor. The ser-

vice is very informal, lasting about 30 minutes. Those who

are attending have expressed appreciation for it. There is

always room for you!

PENTECOST, THE GIFT OF THE SPIRIT

Fifty days after Easter, the disciples were hiding in fear in

Jerusalem when, suddenly, there was the rush of a mighty

wind and tongues of fire descended on them. They were em-

powered to leave the locked room where they were and go

out into the crowded streets of Jerusalem and proclaim in all

the languages of the pilgrims gathered there that ―Jesus, who

has been crucified, has been raised from the dead.‖ (Acts 2)

Thus the church was born, and we have been celebrating that

birth ever since on the 50th day after Easter. This year will

be do different.

The color of the day is RED. To highlight the day, we will

adorn the nave with red geraniums (which can be ordered

with the blank in this ―Digest‖) and we ask that you wear

something red if possible.

Because Pentecost is the third great festival of the Church

Year (besides Christmas and Easter), the Holy Communion

will be celebrated at both services that day. Unlike must

years, there will be no service of confirmation this year, as

those in the confirmation ministry program currently have

completed only one of two years of classes.

Come, share the Spirit!

REQUEST TO WRITE LETTER

A letter from state Senator Michael O’Pake was received

recently regarding Senate Bill 828, which passed 49-0.

This bill would allow non-profit groups to sell food that has

passed on to the PA House of Representatives, and has

been referred to the Committee on Agriculture and Rural

Affairs, where it awaits consideration.

Please call or write to our local state representative, Sam

Rohrer, and express your support for this bill. Obviously,

churches are in need of this legislation to continue dinners,

fund-raisers, etc.

MUSIC NOTES: Christ Has Risen!

Let the heavens rejoice and let the earth be glad; and let them

say among the nations, the Lord reigns. 1Chronicles 16:31

Looking back, in the month of April we celebrated the resur-

rection of our Lord and Savior. We had special music by the

Jr. and Sr. Choirs and solos by Barbara Strough, Walt Hamil-

ton, Juliana Johns and Brenda Boyer. We also had a Lenten

drama called ―Whose Cross Is It, Anyway?‖ written by

Mark and Karla Jensen. This was presented by our youth

every Sunday leading up to and including Easter Sunday.

On Sunday, May 2, will be Music Appreciation Sunday. We

will celebrate ―the Seasons of the Church‖ by using vocal

and instrumental music for this program.

Jr. and Sr. Choirs will be singing for worship services in

May and part of June and then they will be off for the sum-

mer until September. We will have special vocal and instru-

mental music for July and August.

Anyone that would like to participate in the summer music

program can let me know either by telephone or email.

610-273-3911 or [email protected].

Sing from your heart and Praise the Lord,

Louise Wilson, Music Director

Valley High School stadium. If you would like to sign up for

the team or support a team member please go to

www.relayforlife.org/patwinvalley. So far our team members

consist of Keely Bailey, Kaiti Fox, Kelsey Glass, Amy Hat-

field, Tammi Repinsky, Jenna Shupp, Julie DeMarco, Deb

DeMarco and Heather Vallet. Please contact Keely Bailey 610-

856-5211 or [email protected] with any questions. This

year we will walk in memory of Libby, Marie and Jean, as well

as all the other loved ones that we remember each year. Some

of the youth at church are going to assemble pins with a picture

of Libby, Marie and Jean for us to wear at Relay. We will

have them available at our table in fundraiser alley so team

members please make sure you stop over to get one. Starting

May 2, there will be a table in the foyer with information and

the walking schedule sign up. Please consider joining our

team!

We will also be decorating bags to be used at the Luminaria

Ceremony on Friday evening at 10, which will be dedicated to

Libby Repinsky’s memory this year. If you would like to

make a bag which can be decorated in memory of a loved one

and lit for the ceremony, please contact Keely Bailey by May

23 with the number of bags you will need. The team will be

making bags and hope you will join them! Each bag is $10

which goes toward our team goal. We will have a workshop

here at the church if there is enough interest.

There are still a few cookbooks left to sell. They are now $5

(were $10) and will be available on May 2 following the ser-

vices; or contact me at the above phone/email address.

We are happy to report that Thrivent Southwest Berks Chapter

has informed us that they will match 1/3 of our donations up to

$1300!

Thanks for your support!

Keely Bailey
