We have strong positions in our three primary business segments: HVAC, Fire & Security and Refrigeration. Our iconic brands are supplemented by our great channels to market. Willis Carrier invented modern air-conditioning 115 years ago this year. Today, we have a family of brands which include: residential air-conditioning, commercial air-conditioning, and there is a contracting installation and service maintenance part of our business. We include our Automated Logic building management system in our HVAC business, and we have an energy services contracting business. Fire & Security includes commercial detection alarms, residential detector alarms, commercial and industrial fire suppression systems, gas and flame detectors, intrusion access video, and our fire and security field business. Our Kidde brand also celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. Refrigeration is made up of two parts: transport, which reflects our Transicold business, trucks, trailers and containers; and commercial refrigeration, which is primarily focused on retail food stores.

We are investing in digital innovation at UTC Climate, Controls & Security, in three main areas: connected home, intelligent buildings, and the smart cold chain. Connected home is a central theme for us, incorporating our fire safety, security, HVAC, and energy efficiency products and solutions, while focusing on ease of use for our customers. In intelligent buildings we can leverage our suite of products and solutions across HVAC, elevators, security, video, access control, and fire detection and suppression to deliver value to building owners and operators. The smart cold chain is the ability to trace food from harvest to consumer in our refrigeration business, with the ability to track the food’s condition, temperature, and location. These three elements make up how we think about digital.

We operate at the intersection of powerful megatrends that are transforming the global economy: urbanization and the rapidly growing middle class. The scale and speed of urbanization around the world is unprecedented. As more people move into cities, urbanization brings opportunities for our brands to support the development of smarter green building projects. As urban infrastructure ages in today’s cities, our leading building technologies present building owners and facility managers with innovative and efficient replacement and modernization opportunities to upgrade their buildings. The need for reliable life-safety and fire solutions to protect lives and property in buildings and homes around the world continue to be a key growth driver for UTC Climate, Controls & Security. As the global construction market grows, so will the need for scalable commercial and residential security systems that can accommodate changing needs. Buildings are responsible for approximately 40 percent of global energy consumption. This means there is significant potential for energy saving and emission reduction by improving building energy efficiency. Whether in homes, offices, schools or infrastructure, changes in building codes, safety regulations and government policies make our buildings safer, more secure and energy-efficient.

Our company has been a leading voice in sustainability for nearly three decades. Every five years we set aggressive new sustainability goals for our environment, health and safety performance. We then track and report our progress on a quarterly basis. We continue to make progress toward our health, safety and compliance goals. Sustainability goals have had a significant impact on UTC over the years. In the last 20 years alone, UTC has cut its water usage by more than half, and greenhouse gas emissions by more than a third in absolute terms–even as the company's sales tripled. This latest program targets a 25 percent reduction in water usage and 15 percent reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from current levels over the next five years. It also extends sustainability incentives to UTC's supply chain and places the company on track for an 80 percent reduction in GHG emissions by 2050, in line with United Nations targets. We also focus on the well-being of our employees by investing in the tools, processes and training necessary for them to do their jobs safely, in a healthy work environment.

We offer a wide variety of sustainable solutions to our customers, and invest research and development resources to advance energy efficiency, ozone protection and low global warming technologies in our products. NaturaLINE® units are the world’s first natural refrigerant technology for container refrigeration, incorporating CO2 in place of conventional synthetic refrigerants to deliver sustainability and efficiency. In 2016, the company broke ground in transport refrigeration when U.K. food retailer Sainsbury’s became the first customer to take delivery of Carrier Transicold’s prototype natural refrigerant trailer unit. The new-generation system uses low global warming potential carbon dioxide refrigerant, a safe and non-ozone depleting gas that sets the standard for refrigerants and supports advances toward a smart, sustainable cold chain. Marioff's HI-FOG® gas-driven pump unit uses up to 90% less water than traditional sprinkler systems. We also lead by example through the development of energy-efficient products. Innovations such as Carrier’s CO2OLtec™ Integral solution, which uses the natural refrigerant CO2 and fully integrates refrigeration, heating and cooling systems, are leading the way in advancing efficiency and sustainability.
