33When schools decide to implement technology into the classroom there are many negatives. These negatives include funding in the school district, untrained educators, access to the new technology, and student understanding of that technology. However, when using technology in a classroom there are many benefits. These next few slides will show how using technology in the classroom can be overwhelmingly beneficial to our students.

65% of students reported this tool increased their active engagement time on homework.

Concept maps, for example, help children to literally see relationships among concepts and remember information more easily. Concept maps helped kindergarten children share their knowledge about good nutrition using both objects and pictures (Gallenstein 2005).

Homework assignments allow students additional practice learning a new skill or refining an old skill. When students understand the importance of homework and take time to complete each task thoughtfully, they have more experiences to draw from in the classroom.

The more enthusiasm a teacher shows for using technology, the more likely the students will be to experiment and learn from using technology. In addition, research implies that When teachers are more proficient in technology and have more experience, they integrate technology tools into their teaching. As a result, their students are given the opportunities to use technology, regardless of their technological environment at home.

30What is student motivation? This benefit of technology has increased student attendance and lower drop out rates.

Back to Double TechardyClick screen for answer38When using technology in the classroom students are found to be more confident. According to this source, The arrival of the Information Age brings the same high drama to education as did the introduction of the printing press five-and-a-half centuries ago. Before the printing press, curriculum was transmitted orally; teachers and learners with superior verbal and auditory skills fared well. As mass-produced texts became available to both affluent and not-so-affluent members of society, reading and writing became the predominant way of transmitting curricula. What educators saw happen was that the METHOD of education changed as did the curriculum itself. This is bound to happen with technology in the classroom too. Instead of resisting technology, educators should embrace it and be provided with great professional development in order to make the transition into the information age.The best way to ensure that teachers are successful in using technology in their classroom is to bridge the gap that exists with professional development.Source: Honey, Margaret, Katherine McMillan Culp, and Robert Spielvogel. 31What is increased family involvement? When teachers make use of technology parents are more aware of what is happening in the classroom.

Back to Double TechardyClick screen for answer39Parents are finding it easier to get more involved in their childs learning. The U.S. Department of Education reported that when technology is being used students are watching less television, and are communicating more with their parents and teachers. Parents are able to view teacher websites and blogs becoming more aware of what is happening in their childs classroom. Parents are also able to access their childs grades. This gives a parent the opportunity to find out how their child is doing in the classroom before postcards are sent out. School districts are, or planning, to increase family involvement through home use of instructional software.

Educators need to explore technology and gather relevant resources that support objectives and long term goals. Students can work to meet grade level goals by participating in technology tools which support a specific area of their learning. For example, computer games help students reflect on their abilities by providing constant feedback. As well, they provide the right language you need to succeed at the task and then allow you to apply the language just in time.

Educators are also able to gain college credits on line and are better prepared for the classroom. Teachers are gaining the confidence to use technology in the classroom and are better trained to do so. A program through Michigan State University is giving educators the opportunity to become more knowledgeable of technologies to integrate into the classroom.

According to a 2007 Speak Up survey, 66 percent of school administrators and 47 percent of teachers agreed that schools are doing a good job preparing students for jobs and careers of the future. The Speak Up Survey reported, since 2004 we have heard repeatedly and more strongly each year, students discontent with school rules that limit their access to technology at school and rules that prohibit them from using at school the very technology tools and devices that they use constantly outside of school (cellphones, email, IM, Text messaging) in all aspects of their lives.

almost 2/3rds of middle and high school students said let me use my own laptop, cell phone or other mobile device at school. 50% would like to be able to accesstheir school work related software applications and projects from any computer in the school network and have unlimited Internet access on campus. Students also would like tools to help them communicate with their classmates (45%), their teachers (34%) and to organize their schoolwork (42%).

For the past four years the key technology component that students in grades K-12 would like to see in that new school has been the same: a personal laptop for each student to use. And for the first time this year laptops for students also topped the list for teachers and school leaders. Parents, however, only listed personal laptops for students as #6 on their list of technology that could improve student achievement.
