Dear Friends of Komen Michigan,I’m excited to share a summary of our fiscal year 2015, in which we funded over $720,000 in breast health outreach, educa-tion, screening and diagnostic services not covered by any insurance carrier, non-prof-it or government program in Michigan. Thanks to your support we’re delivering on our promise to end breast cancer forever:
· Through our own outreach, education and programs,
· By granting money to health organizations that are addressing specific disparities in our state,
· And by collaborating with other non-profits to find and fill gaps.
I’m so grateful and yet so frustrated... We have the health systems and coverage right now to save many lives, yet 30% of breast cancer diag-nosis in our state are still considered “late stage”. Because of this, over 1,400 women will be killed by breast cancer in Michigan this year, with 420 of them living in the 20 counties we cover. This is not acceptable.
Read on to find out how you can get involved and save lives. From our global research efforts to our local events that need volunteers and support, you can make a difference. Because everyone, regardless of where they live, the color of their skin or their income deserves the same chance I had to find breast cancer early and beat it.
With gratitude and with hope for a future without breast cancer,
Jennifer Jurgens, Executive Director,Breast Cancer Survivor
Komen Michigan is in the process of completing an in-depth assessment of the breast health needs in our community, with a tentative release date of March 1, 2016. Through this work, we have identified target communities using analysis of popula-tion-based breast cancer data including incidence rates, how many breast cancers are diagnosed at an advanced stage, and mortality rates by region and ethnicity.
To ensure that we always address the most pressing needs, the following 3 priorities were communicated in our annual Re-quest for Application for a Komen Michigan large grant:
1) SCREENING ACCESS - Increase access to breast cancer screening and diagnostics by reducing financial, individual, and other barriers to timely and complete access to the Continuum of Care. Priority populations include: low-income, uninsured and underinsured, African American, Hispanic/Latino, rural, high-risk women under 40.
2) CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY NAVIGATION - Support strong comm-unity education, outreach, and navigation programs focused on dispelling myths, reducing fears, and providing support services related to breast cancer, including navigation and barrier-reduction programs (e.g. co-pays, deductibles, transportation, child care etc.) to connect clients to screening services. Priority populations include: African American, His-panic/Latino, and rural.
3) SURVIVORSHIP PROGRAMS - Increase availability of programs serving survivors with a focus on social and emotional wellbeing, wellness programs, and lifestyle intervention strategies.

FUNDING THE GAPS (75%)Michigan’s health care landscape has evolved with the launch of the Af-fordable Care Act and the Healthy Michigan Plan. Throughout these changes, Susan G. Komen Michigan remains a trusted funding resource for undeserved individuals. Federal and state-funded programs will now be able to assist uninsured or under-insured women between the ages of 40 and 64 who have an income at or below 250 percent of the federal poverty level.
While this represents a large population, women with incomes above the stated guideline, but still considered impoverished, or women under 40, will not have access to these funds. Symptomatic women additionally often forego expensive diagnostic services like biopsies, preventing the opportunity to seek treatment and increasing the risk of a later stage, life-threatening diagnosis. To better serve this popu-lation of women, Komen Michigan partners with local organizations to provide quality breast health education and services.
Each year, an independent review committee comprised of local pub-lic health constituents, selects the most promising applications for funding. The fiscal year 2015 along with a grant through a Komen National-Walgreens partnership*, enabled Komen Michigan to invest $710,455 towards the following community grants and an additional $13,500 in small grants:

SUPPORTING RESEARCH (25%)Susan G. Komen is the largest non-government source of breast cancer research in the world. Komen is focused on efforts to stem metastatic and aggressive disease, find scien-tifically sound preventative strategies, and investigate envi-ronmental links to breast cancer.
A minimum of 25 percent of our Affiliate’s net income goes toward breast cancer research, much of which is happening in our community. In Michigan, there have been 79 research grants totaling $23,252,533. Currently there are 5 active grants totaling $5,238,146.
In 2015, Susan G. Komen funded four research grants award-ed to scientists in our service area:
Michele Cote, Ph.D. and Manohar Ratman, Ph.D., of Wayne State University, to identify and understand risk factors for disease in individuals, and to end breast cancer disparities.
Daniel Hayes, M.D., of the University of Michigan, to gain a better understanding of the metastatic process through developing a device that captures circulating tumor cells to further characterize them and grow them for study.
Mo Li, Ph.D. and Xiaochun Yu, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Michigan, to examine which BRCA1 mutations are sensitive to PARPs inhibitors treatment to improve the survival rates of breast cancer patients. Specifically, they are researching whether PARP inhibitors will kill all breast cancer tumors or just selectively kill a set of breast tumor cells with BRCA1 mutations.
Lori Pierce, M.D., of the University of Michigan, to study breast cancer cell sensitivity to radiotherapy in the presence of PARP inhibitors used to treat cancer. Dr. Pierce aims to develop approaches of combining targeted drugs with radia-tion therapy for patients with aggressive tumors that have a high chance of local recurrence.

Komen Michigan benefactors and friends gathered at the Watermark Country Club to celebrate the Fiscal Year 2015 Community Grant
Recipients and honor individuals and organizations that are making an impact in the fight against breast cancer. To make the event truly
special, Komen invited Craig Gray of the Ronin Empowerment Group and Mike Benson of The Counquerors International. Mike daringly
showed off his talent by breaking bricks, distorting a frying pan and bending a metal rod into a ribbon in his teeth.
Mrs. Sue Snyder, Michigan’s First Lady and 11-year breast cancer survivor, also joined Komen to share her journey of strength and courage
throughout her own battle. Not only has Mrs. Snyder battled cancer herself, it has also affected her personally through her mother and
grandmother as well. To fit with the theme of the event, Mrs. Snyder remarked that “without moments of weakness, we would not realize
how truly strong we are.”
Komen Michigan recognized two individuals who have supported the Affiliate by raising awareness and helping in the fight against the
terrible disease: Jim Conner of Triangle Associates, and Carol Gentry of Mercy Health. In addition to awards presented by Komen, Denise
Blunk presented the Young Survivor Award to Angie Hartley-Peters for her outstanding strength and courage when faced with adversity.
Thank you to all those who donated, attended and have supported Komen Michigan. Together we will win the fight! 11

You are the Cure LuncheonTuesday, March 18, 2014
In an effort to increase community knowledge on how donations are used, Susan G. Komen Michigan held their very first “You are the Cure” luncheon in March of 2014. The quick, one-hour luncheon aimed to educate individuals in the community on the work that Komen does on a local and global basis; 75% of net proceeds were used to fund local breast health programs to provide education, screening and diagnostic testing and survivorship programs, while the remaining 25% funded ground-breaking research to find cures for breast cancer.
In addition to being a fundraiser, this was also a big friend-raiser as people came to better understand Komen’s mission and local work. Other similar events are planned in Muskegon, Ann Arbor, Holland and Kalamazoo.
During the free, one hour luncheon, Komen Michigan invited individuals to donate if they felt compelled by the mission. At the end of the event, Komen Michigan raised over $20,000 to fight breast cancer globally and locally!
