Here is a sample paragraph. This is the format & style you should strive for. This is an analysis paragraph of All Quiet on the Western Front.

In the first chapter of All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque, the main character Paul is introduced; he is a soldier currently in the war. The war is filled with bittersweet moments and emotions. In the first scene, Paul and his comrades are in the cook-house awaiting to be fed. They realize that there is a surplus of food and become excited. “Tjaden beamed. ‘What a bean-feast! That’s all for us! Each man gets- wait a bit- yes, practically two issues.’” (p. 5) They were well-fed but this was due to a miscalculation by the cook; he had cooked for one-hundred and fifty men, but there were only eighty, a result of their heavy losses on the front line. The men were content to eat, of course, but it was a tragic loss. The next scene in the chapter finds the soldiers at peace doing their business, and the main character observes the beauty of the meadow. “These are wonderfully care-free hours. Over us is the blue sky… around us stretches the flowery meadow.” (p. 9) There are moments of beauty in the war, but there are moments of grief. Later in the chapter, they visit their dying friend, and the main character looks back upon the memories they shared. “Here lies our comrade, Kemmerich, who a little while ago was roasting horse flesh with us and squatting in the shell-holes.” (p. 14) Throughout the first chapter, many events reflect the bittersweet moments of the war when peaceful and good moments come at a devastating cost.

1. Analyze the actions of the workers and passersby in the German town. Analyze their reasons for throwing bread into the wagons and cattle cars full of prisoners on the train, especially after they saw the desperation of the prisoners and the violence their actions created. (pages 100-102)

2. Describe and analyze Eliezer’s struggle to save his father. Consider both emotional and physical struggle. 3. “…it is every man for himself, and you cannot think of others.” (page 110) Analyze this statement.

Consider what it meant for Elie and the prisoners and what it means for humanity. 4. Several weeks after he was freed, Elie looked in a mirror. “…a corpse was contemplating me.” (page 115)

What must life have been like for the survivors after the Holocaust?
