This document presents a selection of dissemination activities of the
Social Research Centre Dortmund (sfs), Central Scientific Institute of
TU Dortmund University from 2011 to 2013.
TU Dortmund University – sfs at “Wissenswelten Metropole Ruhr” science fair
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt took part in the event in Dortmund on 15 July 2011 with a
speech about social innovation.
Stakeholders from business, government and
society, as well as researchers, students and
non-university research institutes discussed
together the most important trends in central
future fields. At the science fair, sfs was in
charge of the area of social innovation. The

Conference (ISIRC)
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt, director of sfs, on new concepts of Social
Entrepreneurship.
The open conference took place in London from 13th to
15th September 2011 and brought together scholars from
around the globe to discuss the role of innovation in social
businesses, social movements, not-for-profits, state
actors and the broader social economy. Prof. Dr. Jürgen
Howaldt gave a speech about “Rethinking Social
Entrepreneurship: The Concept of Social
Entrepreneurship under the Perspective of Socio-
scientific Innovation Research”, co-authored by Dmitri
Domanski and Dr. Michael Schwarz. For more information

TU Dortmund University – sfs at “Challenge Social Innovation - Innovating
innovation by research – 100 years after Schumpeter”
“A new innovation paradigm” was the title of the opening speech of Prof. Dr.
Jürgen Howaldt at the international scientific conference that was held in Vienna
from 19th to 21th September 2011.
The event was organized by sfs, Centre for Social Innovation Vienna (ZSI)
(https://www.zsi.at/) and net4society (International Network of National Contact
Points for the Societal Challenge and Socio-economic Sciences and Humanities
(SSH) in Horizon 2020) (http://www.net4society.eu/). Researchers from sfs
participated with lectures in different sessions.
The conference focused on questions such as: What does social innovation mean
today? How can research sustain social innovation? What can Socio-Economic
Sciences and Humanities (SSH) contribute? A series of sessions took place over
three days, moving from policy discussion and debate to FP7 networking and
engagement. One of the most important results of the conference was the Vienna

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt, director of sfs, and Dr. Michael Schwarz, research

Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Conference at Massey University, New
Zealand
“Extending Theory, Integrating Practice” was the theme of the international
conference that was organized by the New Zealand Social Innovation and
Entrepreneurship Research Centre from 1st to 3rd December 2011.
Acknowledging the early stage of the
scholarly enquiry of social innovation and
social entrepreneurship, the conference
focused on extending conceptual
underpinnings of social innovation and
social entrepreneurship and effectively
integrating theory and practice. Prof. Dr.
Jürgen Howaldt, director of sfs (TU
Dortmund University), gave a lecture on “Innovation Networks as Success Factor
for Social Innovation”, co-authored by Dmitri Domanski and Dr. Michael Schwarz.

TU Dortmund University – sfs at “Second International Wellbeing at Work
Conference”
The conference was held at the Health and Safety
Laboratory in Manchester on 23 May 2012 where Prof.
Dr. Jürgen Howaldt gave a speech about “Social
Innovation in Germany”. The program included plenary
sessions delivered by global thought leaders in the
field covering the global perspective on wellbeing,
making the case to industry and workplace innovation
and wellbeing. In addition there were four individual
mini-symposia addressing a range of hot topics in the
area of wellbeing at work.

SOQUA Summer School 2012: Social Innovation in Europe and Beyond
TU Dortmund University – sfs contributed with presentations and workshops.
The SOQUA Summer School 2012 “Social Innovation
in Europe and Beyond. The concept, its potential, and
international trends” took place in Vienna from 9th to
13th July 2012. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt, director of
sfs, and Dmitri Domanski, research associate,
participated as speakers.
The event’s second day was organized by sfs under
the headlines “Social innovation in Social Science
Production” and “Social innovation networks”. It was
attended by researchers and practitioners from all
over Europe. The SOQUA Summer School was organized i.a. by the Centre for

Second ISA Forum of Sociology in Buenos Aires, Argentina
The international conference focused on social justice and democratization and
took place from 1st to 4th August 2012. In this context Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt,
director of sfs (TU Dortmund University), gave a lecture about “Shaping Social

TU Dortmund University – sfs at ISEDT RAS in Vologda, Russia
First exchange and workshop on social innovation between both institutes.
Antonius Schröder and Dmitri Domanski, researchers at sfs,
visited the Institute of Socio Economic Development of
Territories of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISEDT RAS)

to 5th
September 2012. The
meeting focused on cooperation between sfs and ISEDT
RAS and also included a workshop about social innovation
with over 60 participants. Key elements were two speeches
by Antonius Schröder and Dmitri Domanski about projects
of the sfs and its concept of social innovation.

congress was held from 20th to 22nd September
2012 and focused on “Services and economic

International Forum of the National University of Colombia 2012: Investigación y
extensión para la innovación (Research and Further Education for Innovation).
In November 2012 the “Foro Internacional UN” of
the National University of Colombia (Universidad
Nacional de Colombia) (http://unal.edu.co/)
focused on “Research and Further Education for
Innovation” (Investigación y extension para la
innovación). The conference was held in Bogotá
and completed by events in other places, e.g.
San Andrés and Leticia. Dmitri Domanski,
researcher at sfs, gave lectures on social
innovation and the new innovation paradigm.
oikos Winter School at Witten/Herdecke University
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt, director of
sfs (TU Dortmund University), gave a
speech about “Social Innovation:
Concepts, Research Fields and
International Trends” at the “oikos Winter School” on 5 November 2012. The
“oikos Winter School”, held at the University Witten-Herdecke (http://www.uni-
wh.de/), dealt in its workshops with the question on how to create a worth living
future.

With a speech about “Social Innovation: Concepts, Research
Fields and International Trends” Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt gave an

25 March 2013. This lecture was part of a scientific exchange
between the TU Dortmund University and the University of Talca

Triple Helix Conference in Linköping, Sweden
“Innovative Practices in Work, Organisation and Regional
Development – Problem and Prospects” was the title of the
international conference in Linköping on 13 June 2013.

Second European School of Social Innovation in San Sebastian, Spain
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt, director of sfs (TU Dortmund University), participated as
a speaker with a lecture about “International Trends in Social Innovation” at the
Summer School on 3 July 2013.
The event was organized by Sinnergiak Social Innovation

The aim of this Summer School was to present
the three main debate topics on social innovation
worldwide. The primary goal of the Summer
School was to understand social innovation. The
way in which social innovation, its corresponding
factors and dimensions, is understood and has
implications for academic studies as well as for
the development of social innovation policies in
both organizations and countries.
The second objective was to discuss different models of measurement of social
innovation. The identification of indicators on social innovation enables the
development of discipline and the design of public policies. Finally, the purpose
was to present interesting cases that may illustrate how social innovation works
in the practice and how it may be scaled to other social environments. For more

TU Dortmund University – sfs at summer course on social innovation in San
Andrés, Colombia
In July 2013 the Universidad Nacional de Colombia (UNAL) organized two weeks of
idea generation and project development.
The course program, consisting
in total of four modules, was held
at the Caribbean campus of the
National University of Colombia
(http://unal.edu.co/) on the
island of San Andrés.
The first two modules were
addressing in particular the
conceptualization of social
innovation, tools and
methodologies from examples of
European and global origin.
These were taught by Dmitri Domanski, researcher at sfs, and Josef Hochgerner
(Centre for Social Innovation Vienna) (ZSI) (www.zsi.at).
The second week primarily was dedicated to practical experiences and examples
from Latin America. This part was organized by Maria Elisa Bernal (CEPAL – The
UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean)

Dmitri Domanski, researcher at sfs, took part in the launch of NESIS Chile.
sfs supported the creation of NESIS (Chilean National
Network of Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation)

invited to participate in the kick-off event, organized at
the University of Chile (http://www.uchile.cl/english) on
1st August 2013. About 250 persons attended the event.
Dmitri Domanski presented the social innovation concept of sfs and gave an
insight into the current state of research. He also held a speech on social
innovation at the workshop “Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation in Higher
Education” (Emprendimiento e Innovación Social en Educación Superior) held by
the Chilean governmental Production Development Corporation CORFO

Researchers from the University of Talca (Chile) at TU Dortmund University – sfs
on 11 September 2013
During the visit of Chilean researchers at sfs a
workshop on social innovation in Chile was organized as
part of the initiative on establishing bilateral
cooperation, funded by the German Research
Foundation (DFG) (http://www.dfg.de/en/index.jsp).
Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt, director of sfs (TU Dortmund
University), focused on the important role of
universities in fostering social innovation. Dmitri
Domanski talked on social innovation landscape in
Chile, while Chilean researchers, Dr. Pablo Villalobos
and Dr. Carlos Huenchuleo, presented cases of social responsibility at the
University of Talca (http://www.utalca.cl/link.cgi/#/link.cgi/).

Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt held the key note on the future of social innovation.

projects were awarded. The event focused on how to initiate and support social
innovations and what models and infrastructures are useful to foster them. Prof.

the central element for future-orientated innovation policies.

TU Dortmund University – sfs at Co-innovation seminar in Wageningen,
Netherlands
Dmitri Domanski, researcher at sfs, made an input on “Social Innovation and
Transition”.
The seminar about “Co-innovation theory and
practice to facilitate change” was organized by the
University of Wageningen

works on diversifying crop protection, and took place on 29 October 2013.
International researchers came together to discuss the science side of co-
innovation with contributions on innovation, learning, transition and the changing

“Social innovations as a perspective for solidarity-based
action in Europe” was the topic of the event in Villigst on
2 November 2013 organized by the Institute for Church
and Society where Prof. Dr. Jürgen Howaldt participated
with a speech about social innovation. In the context of
an increased meaning of social innovation in European
welfare policy the conference focused on how social

Colombian universities and regional stakeholders came together to discuss the
