This course describes substation design and the associated topics of substation earthing and bonding, in conformity with the recommendations of IEC 60479, IEC 60071 and BS 7354. Distribution substations are covered together with larger urban and rural substations operating at secondary transmission voltage.

Comprehensively illustrated with colour photographs and diagrams, it provides an essential toolkit for engineers involved in all aspects of this technology including the allied topics of operational lighting (indoor and outdoor), auxiliary AC & DC supplies and noise suppression. In total there are 85 pages, 24,000 words and 70 illustrations and diagrams.

The assignment, which will be marked and assessed, comprises the design of a large twin 33/11kV transformer substation on a designated site including the control/switchgear building, personnel and vehicle access control, positioning of plant, safety clearances, perimeter security, routing of power and auxiliary cables and the layout of the earth grid. Depending upon prior experience, students should expect 40 to 60 hours of study and assignment completion time. A Course Completion Certificate will be issued.

Potential students should be aware that because the course assignment is mainly a design exercise, a basic capability in engineering drafting is required. Student's graphical input is acceptable in the following file formats or on paper:

1. jpg

2. CompuServe .gif.

3. AutoCAD .dxf

The course will be supplied electronically in .pdf file format over the internet. On request a file copy may be posted on CD-ROM to the student's home or company address, as preferred. At extra cost, a colour printed copy of the course can also be supplied - please contact CPD administration if this is required. Note that material posted from the UK to overseas destinations can take up to two weeks to arrive. Students should return the assignment for marking and assessment within six weeks.

The course tutor enjoyed a long career in a large UK electricity utility, where he obtained experience at all levels from junior operational engineer through to senior manager. Over the last ten years he has worked as a consultant overseas and in the process industries
