Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: For over 40 years, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) has come to the aid of organizations nationwide in an effort to eradicate poverty in America. Just as the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us that “the Church’s love for the poor . . . is a part of her constant tradition” (no. 2444), it is also the tradition of CCHD to love the poor by helping to end the cycle of poverty. Last year, your generosity to CCHD allowed grants for 9 local organizations working to make a difference in our communities. Two of these organizations are Community Outreach, Shining Light NFP of West Chicago, and School on Wheels, sponsored by the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Joseph. Community Outreach, Shining Light NFP, West Chicago, was established in 2011 to serve the poor and vulnerable in the area of West Chicago and surrounding communities. This organization seeks to empower, educate, and provide life/job skills programs, emotional and spiritual support for unplanned pregnancy, tools for practical job skills to reach full potential, outreach to the community, family values, positive self-esteem, and partner with area schools to promote higher education and learning. The programs provide domestic violence counseling, support, and education. School on Wheels, Congregation of St. Joseph, LaGrange Park, was established in 1993 to provide ESL classes for the poor and vulnerable of western Chicago and the suburbs. The School on Wheels bus visits the communities of Woodridge, Hodgkins, Cicero, Summit, and Westmont weekly. The program and volunteer tutors are flexible enough to provide English tutoring that is specialized to the individual needs. More than just providing direct service, the volunteers and students make connections with each other and their communities; develop leadership, community awareness, and appreciation for cultural differences. Some students become volunteers and community leaders. Through CCHD the Catholic Church is working to continue its tradition of love for the poor. Please help the efforts of CCHD to break the cycle of poverty. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Support CCHD in the upcoming Collection. And remember, 25% of the Collection’s proceeds stay here in our diocese to fight poverty in our communities and defend the dignity of our neighbors. Reflections from Fr. DavidReflections from Fr. David While that is, in some ways, very exciting, it is also—to people of my generation and older—a little daunting. This is not the same nation as the one we grew up in. And those changes pose a lot of challenges. I have often wondered what it must have been like to live at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries when there was a massive influx of immigrants that transformed our nation...and then I realize that we are living in such a time! And I am proud of the way that our parish and our community has coped so far with this “newness.” The people and staff of St. Mary Immaculate work very hard for us to live as “one family in faith”...for that, I am grateful to them and to God.

For many people in the world, attention now turns to China who will introduce the new leadership team that has been chosen to guide that nation for the next ten years. But those ten people have been

c h o s e n b y t h e C h i n e s e Communist Party, not the people. Here in our nation we have the blessed privilege to vote for our leadership. As flawed as our system is, most people around the world would love to be able to do

what we do...for that, I am grateful to God.

God is so good! We are constantly offered by the Lord new opportunities to renew our lives and our communities. And he gives us the grace to do so, if we are open to it. With all the disappointments of the last few years...shared by most Americans...over the breakdown of our governing systems, we hope and pray that, as expressed by Mitt Romney and President Obama, our leaders will come together to do the people’s work and guide our nation and its people into a just, secure and fruitful future. We hope and pray that the needs and the interest of our nation and its people will overcome any rancor or the narrow interest of any particular party. May we join together to help realize the vision that we are one nation, one people under God. For the blessings of the chance to live in this nation, to enjoy the benefits and joyfully accept the responsibilities that come with our freedom, let us all both seek the help of God and never cease to give thanks and praise to the Lord! God, bless America!

Whatever your feelings about the outcomes of the many elections that took place last Tuesday, I want to offer you these thoughts and reflections. We had a substantially higher attendance at daily Mass on Tuesday and Wednesday - the day of and after the election. That people obviously came to pray for our nation is a sign of their great faith...for that, I am grateful to them and to God. The parish Commons is a polling place on election day...and we were “open for business” last Tuesday. We are proud to host the wonderful judges who give of themselves to help us exercise our right to vote. (We took good care of them...we fed them a lot throughout the day!) Their spirit was great—they thanked each voter for voting and they were buoyed by the large turnout. Since our parish makes up a large percentage of the population of Plainfield, that means that a lot of the members of our parish family turned out to vote, along with a lot of our fellow citizens...for that, I am grateful to them and to God. We have several of our fellow parishioners who ran for office last Tuesday. Some won and some lost. Regardless of the outcome, I am proud of them and anyone in our parish who offers themselves for public service. Despite the cynicism that is widely held, public service is a noble offering of self and governing at any level is no easy task. I congratulate them all and offer them my thanks. We are blessed to have public servants in our parish...for that, I am grateful to them and to God. Each major network emphasized that the outcome of the presidential race as well as other federal offices was heavily influenced by the changing demographics of our nation. Looking at the various descriptions and charts of the population of our nation, I could not help but think that our parish, St. Mary Immaculate, and our community of Plainfield, reflect in a personal and local way those significant, national realities. St. Mary Immaculate looks like America...for that, I am grateful to them and to God.

2012 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal Parish Goal Surpassed! Thank You!

Please, if you have not already, make sure you return your pledge. An appeal envelope is available in the Commons and can be mailed in or returned to the parish. Monthly pledge payments for the CMAA pledges should be made in the next few days. It is very important that these pledges be paid. Now that pledge payments have surpassed our goal of $178,838, 50% of the additional funds received will be returned to the parish for our use.

Veterans to be Blessed and Honored at St. Mary Immaculate

This Sunday, Veterans Day, we pay tribute to all American veterans - living or dead - and thank living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. Please join with our Military Ministry at all morning Masses this Sunday so together we make sure our veterans know we have not forgotten their sacrifice. At these Masses, all veterans will be asked to stand to receive a special blessing. Veterans are invited to the Military Ministry table in the Commons to pick-up a prayer card and rosary, gifts from the Military Ministry.

College Seminary Visit The Vocation Office will be sponsoring a trip for all men who are 16 years of age and older to St. John Vianney College Seminary in St. Paul, MN. Brothers In Christ The ministry of Brothers in Christ is a group of men who seek to help one another become better men through developing our relationship with Jesus. We acknowledge that we are all on a personal faith journey. Some of us are novices, some more experienced, and others, perhaps, just waiting to grow spiritually.

We have many backgrounds and many gifts, but we share the same spirit. That spirit is the spirit of love and we do all we can to help one another, by being Christ in all his compassion for one another.

We learn from the Word of God, meditation, readings, and our unique life experiences as men. You will find that our meetings are full of spirit, laughter, and inspiration. It is easy to feel the Holy Spirit moving and working within us individually and as a group.

We meet every Saturday morning form 7:00 to 9:00 a.m. in the North Wing Rooms A, B, and C across from the Adoration Chapel.

13th Annual Moose Lodge Turkey Drop on Saturday, November 17 The 12th Annual Plainfield Moose Lodge/Ford Family Turkey Drop is Saturday, November 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Plainfield Moose Lodge located at 16310 S. Lincoln Highway (Crest Creek Plaza, Route 30). We are accepting frozen turkeys, non-perishable items for baskets and cash donations. Cash donations are welcome (especially) prior to November 17 to purchase turkeys. In exchange for your donation of a frozen turkey, please join us for a free brunch - stay for a bite to eat and enjoy good food and fellowship. Turkeys are distributed through the Plainfield Interfaith Food pantry and other area organizations. A Marmion Family Christmas Craft Show Marmion Academy Alumni Association is sponsoring its annual “A Marmion Family Christmas” Craft Show on Saturday, November 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday, November 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Regole Field House at 1000 Butterfield Road in Aurora. The cost of admission is $4 for adults (age 12 and older). Parking is free both days with free shuttle bus service on Saturday. The craft show is full, with 150 crafters (157 booths) ready to fill the new Regole Field House with the sights and sounds of the holidays. Food service is available both days. Santa Claus will be visiting the show on Sunday from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. Sorry, no babysitting service is available and no baby strollers are allowed in the show area. R.C.I.A.: Anyone seeking information about joining the Catholic Faith should contact the Parish Office. Inquiry begins in early September each year and lasts until Pentecost Sunday.

MARRIAGES: Please contact the Parish Office when planning a marriage. Weddings must be scheduled at least six months in advance according to Diocesan norm. (Weddings are not scheduled on Sundays unless during a regular Sunday Mass.)

BAPTISMS: Parents of children are required to attend a Baptism Class prior to setting a date for the Baptism of their child. We encourage parents to attend the class before your child is born. Baptisms are held on Sundays at 2:00 PM or during a weekend Liturgy. Please call the Parish Office at 815-436-2651 to register for a Baptism Class Session.

REGISTRATION: WELCOME TO OUR VISITORS AND NEW MEMBERS! Please introduce yourself to one of the priests and to those around you. If you are interested in registering as a parishioner, you are invited to attend our Welcome Gathering Event. This is held almost every Sunday at 10:15 AM and usually meets in the Media Center of the Parish School. Registration for membership is no longer taken through the Parish Office but only through the Sunday Gatherings.
