There has been a popular expression that, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” It rings true to me again this time. Since I came to St. Timothy’s Church two years ago, it was my dream that I will be here long enough to be pastor when Msgr. John reaches his age of re-tirement. Well, that is too good to be true. After only two short years, I got called to move on to a new assignment. I am not sure how my new ministry will be, but I know for sure it is very difficult for me to leave St.

Timothy’s Parish, where I called “home sweet home” for the past two years. I fell in love with this parish community and its staff right on the first day I got here. As a stu-dent of liturgy, I love our way of celebrating Masses. Each celebration is with active participation and prayerful spirit. I love how all staff members and volunteers and or-ganizations collaborate with one another. And I love how respectful we treat each oth-er, especially how hospitable we are to our visitors. We are truly “forming loving disci-ples of Jesus Christ who make a difference” as stated in our parish’s mission state-ment. I will miss my two years being here and miss you all tremendously. Much thanks to God for blessing me with these two fabulous years at St. Tim’s. Thank you, Msgr. John, for being my great pastor, mentor, and friend. Thank you, staff, for your support and friendship. And thank you all my wonderful parishioners for your tolerance of my homilies and your courteous laugh for my silly jokes. I really had much fun serving here. Last but not least, if I offended anyone for any reason, please accept my apology. It was never meant on purpose. May God bless you all. Fr. Vincent Pham

As of July 1, our Youth Min-ister, Vanessa Serna, will be taking on the full time role of Coordinator of Youth Minis-try and Confirmation, with the assistance and su-pervision of Matthew Zema-nek, our Director of Adult &

Youth Faith Formation as he continues to expand his role in adult faith formation as well as parish-wide programs and ini-tiatives. If you have any inquiries about high school youth ministry, youth prepa-ration for the Sacrament of Confirmation, or our young adult programs, like our weekly THRIVE young adult ministry, Vanessa will be more than happy to meet with or talk to you about these ministries. We look forward to the continued growth and expansion in what we offer here at Saint Timothy’s for all of our parishioners and families. Please pray for both Matt & Vanessa in their new, expanding respon-sibilities as they seek to form loving disci-ples of Jesus Christ who make a differ-ence. Feel free to contact either of them with any questions at all.

A R e f l e c t i o n f o r I n d e p e n d e n c e D a y 2 0 1 9 On July 4, 1776, after days of political north-south haggling (yes, back then, too), delegates from the thirteen colonies signed a “Declaration of Independence” from their mother country. The document recites a long list of grievances against the English king, but it is the single sentence quoted above, the one we learned in elementary school, that became our country’s act of faith. How many of the fifty-six signers really believed it, do you think? Some of them (notably Thomas Jefferson, the principal draftsman of the Declaration of Independence) owned African slaves. The truth that slaves had been created equal with their masters was perhaps not as self-evident to them. Or they didn’t need a theological basis anyway. Whatever their motivation, all who signed had cour-age, because what they did was a capital crime, and they could have lost everything, including their lives. For all of us, I think the challenge on this Fourth of July is to ask ourselves, first, whether we really believe that “all men are created equal” and, second, whether we are doing anything to discourage (or perhaps unwittingly) to encourage racism in our country. I for one am ashamed of the many ra-cial or ethnic jokes I have listened to or told in the past (even in the seminary), which ridiculed and perpetuated unjust and false stereotypes of people of other colors, nationalities and religions. We must take care, because prejudice can be a very subtle evil, which is nourished by our unhealthy de-sire to be better than others instead of being a brother or sister to others. To end on a happier note, here is a favorite old joke from the Borscht Circuit which I heard from My-ron Cohen many years ago: A popular rabbi was retiring and his loving congregation held a dinner in his honor. After listening to a multitude of accolades by a parade of speakers, the rabbi stood up to express his appreciation and said, “I am not worthy of all this praise, because in the eyes of God I am nothing.” An old disheveled, unwashed and unshaven homeless guy immediately stood up and cried out, “No, no, rabbi, you are a great and holy man. I am a nothing.” With a sneer, the rabbi said to the congregation, “So look who thinks he is a nothing?” (By Bill Kramer, Life, Justice and Peace)

S t T i m o t h y B a c k p a c k P r o j e c t Why not have a family-sponsor-a-family project! For the past nine years, the Vacation Bible School has partnered with our St. Vincent de Paul Society to sponsor a backpack Project for children who are in need in our own community. The children re-ceiving backpacks are identified from our pantry clients, Faith Formation families, and St. Vincent de Paul clients. This year we are collecting backpacks and supplies for 150 children, grades 1 through 8. These backpacks make a great difference in the lives of the young ones who receive them. We invite you to join us. If you would like to donate a backpack or school supplies, kindly bring them to the decorated con-tainers in the courtyard after Masses on the weekends of July 13/14, July 20/21, and July 27/28. We need these by July 29. Supplies needed:

backpacks for grades K-8, crayons – 24 count, erasable markers, #2 pencils, Elmer’s glue sticks/school glue, pink erasers, 12 inch rulers, yellow highlighters, black or blue ballpoint pens, wide or college ruled 3-hole paper, spiral notebooks,

3 ring binders, 5 ¼ inch school scissors, pencil sharpeners

We also welcome volunteers to help with this project!

For questions or additional donations, kindly contact Linda at [email protected].
