THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 1, 2018
FROM THE PASTOR
My Dear Parishioners,
Greengs to you and Happy Fourth of July Weekend! A word of welcome to all our visitors in town for this Holiday Weekend: WELCOME!
In summerme, as we visit and vacaon in areas far and near, it is a special grace not only to get away but to worship in other Catholic Parishes and to experience the unity of our Catholic Faith. And I do hope that this summer, you have the opportunity to experience just that. Thanks to Google maps and Massmes.org, not to menon the heroic men and women who have gone before us spreading the faith, it is quite easy not only to find a Catholic Church virtually anywhere in the world but also to find the Mass mes! To aend a Mass elsewhere is always a great reminder that wherever that Church is, whatever the language that is spoken, we, as Catholics, share ONE FAITH, ONE CREED, ONE EUCHARIST. In an age of so much division, this reality can be a healing remedy for the wounds that afflict us. So be sure to worship when you are away and share with us your experiences and bring home a bullen. BTW: (At Immaculata, I used to have a contest that whoever brought me back the furthest bullen from another Catholic Church would get a prize. Perhaps we could implement that contest here, I’m sure we would have quite a variety and lots of compeon!)
In summerme, not only are we the visitors but we are also visited. In fact, living so close to Longwood Gardens, Brandywine Museums and various campgrounds, our parish is frequented throughout the year by people far and wide. And it’s not uncommon that I receive kind words about our Church, our people and our worship. This past week, I received one such word via email from someone vising us from afar and I thought I would share with you:
Dear Fr. Rogers,
I am sorry for my delay in wring this leer, but as I had menoned to you on Memorial Day Weekend, my family and I were visitors at your beauful church on Memorial Day weekend. I had aended Saturday Mass and the Miraculous Medal Novena, and my husband and youngest daughter aended with me at your later Sunday Mass. We were all impressed to see a church so full, and more importantly, with families filling nearly every other row. It was wonderful to see whole families--even with grandparents! And all were respecully-dressed!
I have been sharing this bit of inspiraon with others, including priests, and I pray we all can help our Catholic Church to raise the standards in the parishes. May God connue to bless you and your parish for all of the Good you do.
Thanks to all who make our parish so great. As we raise the flag this week, let’s connue to raise our hearts to the Lord who was raised up for us and is deserving of all our praise.
Peace,
Fr. Rogers 236

Seminarian Says
Queson of the Week
Why Does God allow people to suffer?
Answer: This is a very deep and honest queson, and I will answer to the best of my knowledge. The issue of suffering in our world is also called the Problem
of Evil, and it has baffled the minds of some of the best Phi-losophers and Theologians in Church History. As we all know, suffering is a direct result of living in a fallen world due to Adam and Eve’s Original Sin. In order to best answer the queson of suffering, it is important to know what Sin is. Sin does not exist as a “thing” or “substance”, rather it only exists as a lack of something also called a “privaon”. Just as Darkness exists as the absence of light, Sin exists as the absence of God. Before Original Sin, we know that humanity existed in perfect harmony with God and his creaon (Nature), but due to our fall, we do not have that harmony anymore. Suffering can either be a physical, mental, or spir-itual evil and it is a result of Original Sin. God permits peo-ple to suffer for one main reason. We have the opportunity to unite our suffering to the suffering God endured in Christ his only Son. Humanity is saved and redeemed because of Christ’s suffering and he gives us the opportunity to unite our suffering to his; where? In the Mass when we receive his Body and Blood. All evil, suffering, and difficules which God permits his people to endure is ordered towards our greater good and redempon. I’ve always loved the phrase, “God does not give you anything you cannot handle.” So, trust in God and unite all of your sufferings to Jesus because he chose to suffer for us.
As we prepare for our Jubilee Year celebra-
on, all parishioners of St. Patrick are invited to share a special memory,
anecdote, or thought to be featured throughout 2019 in the bullens and on the website. We want to hear from you!

FAITH FORMATION THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Violin Notes
For some years now, Fr. Michael Connol-ly, OSF, occasionally brings to St. Pat’s his friend MSGT. Mark Dorosheff, USAF, who plays several violin selecons aer the 5PM Mass on Saturday evenings. Sgt. Mark is a member of the Presidenal
Strings and oen plays at White House events, most recent-ly for the President of France. He lives in Northern Virginia with his wife Monika and their two sons.
Mark was here at St. Pat’s recently and played the following pieces for 100+ folks who remained aer Mass. He and our parish Director of Music, Anne Marie McCarthy, are gradu-ates of Duquesne University in Pisburgh with degrees in music. Small world! Some have asked about the pieces he performed so beaufully.
1. Danse Espagnol by Manuel de Falls (1876-1946). One of the most important Spanish composers of the early 20th century. The piece is from the opera “La Vida Breva” and was arranged for violin by Fritz Kreisler in 1926.
2. Meditaon from the opera “Thais” by Jules Massenet (1842-1912).
3. Csardas in 1904 by Viorio Mon.

Did You Know?
In the month of July we celebrate the feast day of St. Benedict who is considered the father of Western monascism because of his Rule which was a clear set of instrucons for monasc life. His rule had the highest standards of faith and be-
havior. In fact today thousands of men and women sll live the Rule 1,500 years later. That is an amazing thought. We can follow Benedict’s Rule by reminding ourselves that eve-rything we do influences everything else. During your sum-mer break try paying aenon to your thoughts, words and acons even when no one is watching you. That’s the begin-ning of “holy.”
