SUICIDE

Many people were shocked by the recent suicides of Kate Spade, a famous designer of women’s fashion wear, and Anthony Bourdain, the host of CNN’s “Parts Unknown.” Unfortunately, celebrity suicide is sadly not all that uncommon. What many people cannot wrap their heads around is the fact that these people were successful in their careers, and wealthy. On the outside, they seemed to have it made. But deep sadness and depression can affect anyone.

Many, if not most of us know someone who committed suicide. It’s happened in my extended family, and I’ve presided at more than a few funerals of persons who died so tragically. It always feels to me like a defeat – for the individual, for their loved ones, for the Church, and for me personally, even if I never met the deceased before the day of their burial. It’s not that I feel that we failed the person who committed suicide. If indeed it was an act of free will, the only one responsible for the act itself is the individual. Nevertheless, suicide leaves me with a feeling of defeat, probably because it is all so unnecessary.

Our faith tells us that we have the answer to hopelessness and despair. His name is Jesus Christ. Not that simply telling someone to have faith will save them from depression or suicidal thoughts. Clearly, there are victims of severe pain, physiological or psychological disorders which cloud the mind to the point that the normal impulse to live is suppressed. Inasmuch as a person’s rational faculty is impacted by these or other causes beyond their control there is a diminishment of free will. But as long as a person still has his wits there is hope that he or she can be reached by an appeal to the love of God. By the grace of God he may come to believe that there is no reason to despair over sin and guilt because in Christ God casts our sins behind his back; or that there is no reason to cling to unforgiveness because in Christ the power to forgive is accessible; or that he does not have to allow himself to be ruled by anger because the meek and humble Christ has empowered us to love our enemies. Experts say that despair, unforgiveness and anger can cause depression that can lead to thoughts of self-annihilation; the Bible says that these have been defeated by the Cross of Jesus.

To save him or her, the grace of God that brings release from guilt, freedom from resentment, and calm to the soul has to be felt by a person in danger of succumbing to a sense of hopelessness that leads to suicide. This may come by simply reading the Word of God or hearing its truth. There is more than one person who picked up a Bible at the last minute or heard a preacher on the radio that saved her from taking her life. But often times the only way to break through is by communicating the love of God by person-to-person contact. This is where you and I can do much to prevent suicide. We can be the loving touch of Christ by our hugs, we can be the listening Christ by our ears, we can be the compassionate Christ by our eyes. Psychologists tell us that suicide rates have risen in our technological age because there is less a sense of community and belonging. The Church by nature is community. We are a fellowship, we are a place of welcome, we are a shelter against an uncaring world. We are the Body of Christ.

There are probably as many reasons why a person decides to end his or her life as there are persons who do it. We cannot judge another person’s state of mind. But we can share our blessed assurance that there is no situation in this world which is absolutely hopeless. Corey ten Boom, a Dutch Christian who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp with her sister in 1944, wrote that before she died her sister said that there is no pit so deep that God is not deeper still. The love of God broke through their hell on earth. We have to believe, then, that the love of God can break through the strongest depression and suicidal thoughts.

Live the Liturgy Jesus compares the Kingdom of God to a mustard seed, the tiniest of seeds. When planted, the tiny mustard seed grows into a tremendous tree with large branches. So, too, in each of our lives, small things can have profound effects. God can use one of our more insignificant gestures to radically change another person’s life. It may be the kindness of a smile, our willingness to accommodate someone, listening to someone’s story, helping someone who is hurting, standing up for someone who is right, or complimenting someone on something they did. We all have God-given gifts and talents. Our task is to use them creatively, consistently, lovingly, and generously. We trust that God will take care of the rest.

Questions of the Week

1st Reading (Ez 17:22-24) The prophet Ezekiel hears this “proverb” of the Lord (the restoration of Israel) while in exile in Babylon around 570 BC. How do you think the captive Israelites reacted to Ezekiel’s words?

2nd Reading (2 Cor 5:6-10) Paul speaks of Christians being “courageous.” How does your faith give you strength and confidence?

Gospel (Mk 4:26-34) Why do you think Jesus often spoke about the Kingdom of God by using parables?

Father’s Day Prayer Heavenly Father, you entrusted your Son Jesus, the child of Mary, to the care of Joseph, an earthly Father. Bless all fathers as they care for their families. Give them strength and wisdom, tenderness and patience: support them in the work they have to do, protect those who look to them, as we look to you for love and salvation, through Jesus Christ our rock and defender. Amen. When a man walks in integrity and justice,

happy are his children after him! Proverbs 10:7

THIS SUMMER, SPEND TIME WITH A FRIEND

Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament awaits our visit While Mass is the greatest act of worship for Catholics, Eucharisc Adoraon outside Mass offers us another opportunity to spend me in the Real Pres-ence of Our Lord. Christ, in his great humility, appears in the form of bread so he can be in every Catholic Church in the world. Whenever we need him, we can find him. He is present, in a tabernacle, waing for us to visit. Adorers needed! If you are able to help with a Holy Hour or to substute, contact Mary Wharton at 302-388-3752; [email protected]. Hours most in need of coverage are: Tuesdays 1 pm, 5 pm, Thursdays 9 am, 12 pm, 5 pm, Fridays: 10 am, 5 pm.

Saint Quote: “I beg you to recommend to everyone, first, adoraon of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and then reverence for the most holy Mary. Take refuge oen at the feet of Jesus...My dear ones, the Visit to the Blessed Sacrament is an extremely necessary way to conquer the devil. Therefore, go oen to visit Jesus and the devil will not come out victorious against you.” - St. John Bosco

The 2018 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. In the first seven months of the 2018 Appeal three hundred and two fami-lies have pledged more than $119,200 of which $105,868 has been received. The Appeal will sup-port continuing operations of the Parish and help us fund a few nec-essary projects. These include up-grade of the HVAC system in the Church and Parish Life Center, im-provement of the church sound system, including hearing assist devices, and improved use of elec-tronic media in support of parish communications. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collec-tion basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office Or, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past six months has increased. The collection income through June 10 for the fiscal year is $61,000 below our budgeted amount. The deficit is partially offset by the results of the 2018 Parish Appeal. Our beloved church with the associated facilities is 16 years old. As in your home, maintenance costs and operating costs need to be ad-dressed. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to ful-fill our fiscal responsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

ST. THOMAS MORE

“I am the King’s good servant, but God’s first.” So said St. Thomas More, whose feast we celebrate on June 22nd. St. Thomas More was once Sir Thomas More, a lawyer and statesman in the court of King Henry VIII. When the king wished to dissolve his marriage to Catherine of Aragon — who was infer-tile — the pope held up the validity of the marriage. Desperate to generate an heir, King Henry declared himself the head of the Church of England and granted himself an annulment. Most leaders signed the “Oath of Suprema-cy,” declaring the King’s power over the English Church. Thomas More, then the Lord Chancellor, refused to sign. He was sentenced to death. St. Thomas More reminds us of our call to integrity and to the defense of truth in the public square. Thomas More is the patron saint of lawyers, politicians, and civil servants. St. Thomas More, pray for us!

THINK ABOUT THIS BEFORE YOU VISIT YOUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR FOR 2018

The tax laws regarding charitable contributions changed this year. The standard deduction has been increased making it less likely that you will itemize your deductions. However, for those over 70 ½ years of age, you may make a charitable contribution from your annual Re-quired Minimum Distribution (RMD) from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and receive a federal tax deduction. Advantages Individuals and eligible spouses can make an IRA charitable with-

drawal and not have that transfer count towards your taxable income in the year you make the contribution.

Charitable withdrawal amounts would count toward your RMD. By avoiding the recognition of taxable income, you may have less of

your Social Security income subject to income tax. Rules for Using an IRA Charitable Withdrawal Individuals must be 70½ years old or older. The rollover must be completed before December 31 of the year in

which the contribution was to count against taxable income. Withdrawals can only be made from traditional IRAs. Funds have to come directly from the plan administrator to the parish.

These are generic advantages and rules. Talk with your financial advi-sor or plan administrator for advantages and rules applicable to your specific situation. If you wish to discuss this opportunity with a member of the Parish Development Council, e-mail [email protected], President of the Development Council.

Mission Appeal

During the weekend of June 30-July 1, 2018, Rev. Honest Munishi, CSSp, will visit our parish to speak at the Masses about the missionary work of the Church and in particular that of the Spiritans (Congregation of the Holy Spirit, previously known as the Holy Ghost Fathers). To learn more about the

Spiritans, please visit their website at http://spiritans.org. This visit is part of a national program in which annually a representative of one of the missionary groups visits parishes of the Archdiocese to in-vite the parish to share in the missionary work of the universal Church. The Spiritans are an international community engaged in a wide range of missionary activity in over 60 countries throughout the world. Fr. Honest is a missionary priest from Tanzania, East Africa. He presently is serving as pastor of a Spiritan parish in Baltimore, MD. When Jesus said: “You shall witness to me in Jerusalem and in Samaria and to the ends of earth”, he made the spread of the Gospel an essential part of our Catholic life. Please respond generously to Fr. Honest’s ap-peal.
