ABS Project in México

Outcomes

1. Reforming or adjusting the legal framework and establishing administrative or public policy measures that regulate access, utilization of GR and associated TK arising from the fair and equitable sharing of benefits

2. Strengthening national institutional capacities.

3. Protecting traditional knowledge and improving the capacities of indigenous and local communities and other stakeholders to generate social awareness on conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, GR and associated TK, as well as benefit-sharing arising from their access and utilization.

Following the processes for compliance with the NP

To ensure that its application in Mexico, favors the rights of indigenouspeople and local communities we must follow free, informed andparticipatory processes, including the preparation of BCP.

The Government of Mexico requested technical assistance from theGEF and UNDP to promote compliance with the current legalframework, as well as transparency and equity among providers andusers of national Genetic Resources.

Opportunities

• “Time of the communities”.

• Small number of organizations with a proved expertise in GR BCP’s.

• Currently many IPLC’s have social challenges, and a small social cohesiondue to phenomena such as migration, unemployment and lack ofopportunities.

• Implementation of legislative, regulatory, administrative or policymeasures that strengthen the protection of Traditional Knowledge (TC) atthe local level are beginning.

• Recovering the heritage.
