Background/Context

Examples of continued tension between “Planning” and “Plan Implementation” (from LinkedIn)

“Real Planners not only plan but also devise innovative strategies to get their plans implemented.”

“Increasingly Planners are key implementers along the entire real estate development delivery system. "Planners" (a title which I contend is a misnomer) transform the built environment of cities.”

Potential for evolution of “Strategic Planning”

“Strategic Planning” goes beyond “painting a vision,” to answer questions like: “Who is going to carry it out?” and “How - what are the steps to take?”

Perhaps to take Planning to the next level, or just to adapt to today’s economic environment, planners should also be asking “Does it make sense?” and “When - is this the right time?”

Thus, this session will arm planners with key data they need to be strategic.

Learning Objectives

1. Anticipate the expected outlook for construction, real estate investment, and real estate services in Indiana in 2012. Anticipate the longer-term outlook for various land uses (industrial, office, multifamily, etc.) based on the real estate cycle.

2. Identify current topics of interest to the real estate development community, and which may serve as a bridge to the interests of planners. Identify issues the real estate development communitybelieves require government action.

3. Consider how this data applies to their communities, think more strategically, and consider potential actions they might take.
