Voice messages– Calls began at 11:50:42– 30,162 calls attempted: 12,376 live answers; 15,519 machines

TOTAL DELIVERY TIME 3.36.02 hours

Email Messages– Sent at 11:50:42– 58,293 sent; 12,855 responded “I have received this alert.”

Summary of WarnMe Test on 4/22/09

Survey– 4,678 responses

• 60.5% were staff/employee– 52.5% on the Davis campus– 44.1% said they had never updated WarnMe information

• 29.5% were students– 69.8% undergrads– 16.7% said they had never updated WarnMe information

Primary Findings– Some people were unaware of the test

• Including some department IT people– Email didn’t come from @ucdavis.edu– Suspicious of link to Survey Monkey

1. Stress makes you stupid. Don’t design sophisticated systems for college-level minds. Design systems for frightened third graders..

2. The problem is at the input. Examine your assumptions at the front end.

3. No matter who you train – someone else will show up. Keep is simple and assume that everyone may not have undergone your training.

1. Develop a specific “influenza pandemic” checklist for departments with early reminders of necessary actions; i.e.: monitoring absenteeism, location of HR guidance for absences, coordinating communication to departments.

2. A message should be given to the campus with update/final disposition of this event and why we reacted as we did.

3. Campaign to stress personal hygiene, including making sure restrooms are stocked with soap, towels.

4. Continue encouraging departments to develop business continuity plans within UC Ready.

5. Establish a scenario planning taskforce from members of the Emergency Operations Center team to reevaluate the current plans and identify appropriate response triggers.

6. Create a campus communication plan based on those response triggers.

7. Create definitions and guidelines for campus ‘closure’, including what essential services would not be included.

8. Evaluate and revise current pandemic guidance documents for the campus (HR, EHS, IET) and create to post additional guidance documents related to public health precautions, travel and academic continuity.

9. Continue encouraging departments to develop business continuity plans within UC Ready.
