Be an environmental

champion

The Sydney Swans and our Major Partner, Volkswagen, have teamed up to help spread the message about doing our bit for the environment.

Biodiversity, sustainability, greenhouse gases, carbon footprint, ecosystems, climate change - our everyday actions have an impact on all of these and many other environmental issues.

This workbook has been developed to guide you and your family through some easy steps on how you can make a difference.

A few of our players have volunteered to be environmental ambassadors. They all have a special interest in making an effort to lower their own carbon footprint. Volkswagen is the perfect partner for us in this program, due to their own unique “Think Blue.” attitude.

“Think Blue.” expresses Volkswagen’s goal of creating environmentally friendly products and solutions and getting involved in initiatives that contribute to a sustainable future. “Think Blue.” is about encouraging everyone to be more responsible on the road and more environmentally aware of how your everyday actions affect our planet.

In this workbook, you will find tips and advice, activities and competitions, facts and figures to help you become an environmental ambassador at home and at your school. We want you to be a leader and show others how they can lower their impact on the environment.

We hope you enjoy this workbook and remember, go the Swans!

The Indigenous cultures of Australia are the oldest living cultural history in the world, going back from between 50,000 to 70,000 years! The first Australians lived in harmony with the land, were semi-nomadic and used the natural food, shelter and water resources that were plentiful in their surroundings, before moving on with the change of seasons.

Fresh water is our most precious resource. We can’t live without it, and use it every day in lots of different ways.

When rain or melting snow runs down mountains, streams are formed. Over

time, these streams catch more and more water and join other streams, eventually

forming a river. It can take millions of years for a river to form!

Water

Read about what Sydney Swans star Kurt Tippett does to save water:

One leaking tap at your house or at your school, dripping at one drop per second, means that 7,000 litres of water are being wasted per year.

That’s 58 standard bath tubs! While water covers around 75% of our planet, only 1% of that is fresh.

I keep my own water bottle and refill it from the tap instead of buying bottled water.

I wait until I have a pile of dirty footy gear and make sure the washing machine is full before I wash a load.

I try to take quick showers and make sure I have a water efficient showerhead.

I keep bottles of water in the fridge. When I want a cold drink, I don’t have to let the tap run until the water is cool enough to drink.

Add your ideas to this list of small steps you can take to help you reduce the amount of water you use every day and track your progress for a week:

Energy

Energy comes in two basic forms: renewable and non-renewable.

Do you know which is which? Tick the correct answers below.

Energy comes from many different sources and is used every day to grow food, make electricity and run our cars.

Renewable energy is energy that you can keep using, and is quickly and easily replaceable. Non-renewable energy is energy that cannot be replaced, once you use it, it’s gone!

What can you do?

Here are some of our tips:

• Use a bucket and sponge when washing your family car. Try to wash the car on your lawn, instead of on the road, to stop detergents from ending up in our waterways

• Use large buckets or any empty box planters to catch rainwater and use it to water your garden

• Check your house and school for leaky taps or toilets and talk to an adult about getting them fixed

Do you ever think about what you can do to reduce greenhouse gases and depletion of the ozone layer? These issues, while global, can be influenced locally by you and your family.

There are three main types of pollution. Link the types listed below with the correct examples of causes and effects.

PollutionThere are many ways that you can make an impact in reducing the pollution you and your family

produce. Some of these ideas may sound simple but they can really make a difference.

11 12

Some gases, such as carbon dioxide, are called greenhouse gases because they absorb infrared radiation emitted by

the earth’s surface, keeping the planet warmer than it otherwise would be. This

is called the greenhouse effect.

Pollution

I ride my bike to training every day. Not only is it better for the environment, it helps to keep me fit.

I catch a ride with my friends and family when I can, so we are sharing one car to our destination.

I never pour chemicals, oil or paint down the drain because it goes straight to our waterways!

I check my car regularly to make sure the tyres are correctly inflated and that there are no oil leaks.

What can you do? There are many ways we can help to reduce our carbon footprint every day, and how we get to and from school is a great place to start. Complete the activity below

and think about whether you can decrease your contribution to pollution.

Talk to all your classmates and find out how they travel to and from school. Record the results below:

Whether you have younger or older brothers and sisters, there’s probably something you can do to change the way you and your family get around. Make a list and talk to your family about your ideas.

PollutionCars are such a huge part of our everyday lives. With new efficient technologies and a modern driving

behaviour, a lot of fuel can be saved and the pollution caused by cars reduced.

13 14

Step 1

Step 2

At the Sydney Swans, this is what Kieren Jack does to reduce the pollution and impact on the environment his car can cause:

Empty the boot and remove items you don’t need from your car. The lighter your car is, the less petrol it uses.

Tell your mum or dad to drive carefully and smoothly. The less you brake and accelerate, the better!

Ask your mum or dad if they have had the car serviced recently. This can improve efficiency and fix any problems like leaking oil or air conditioning.

Make a list before you go shopping or run errands. If you plan where you need to go and what you need to do, you will only need to do one trip instead of driving back out to the supermarket because you forgot something!

Check the tyres on your car. If they are not at the correct air pressure, the efficiency of your car is affected.

I reuse plastic containers at home for storing lots of different things.

After a game, I throw my empty Gatorade bottles in the recycling bin.

I try to buy as much fresh food as I can, it not only reduces my waste but is healthier for my diet.

I throw my dirty footy boots and socks into an old plastic bag after a game before they go into my kit bag.

Most of us know about recycling. In Australia, we do a pretty good job and have some great initiatives in place.

However, we are also quite good at producing waste! A great strategy to complement your recycling is to reduce your usage of packaging in the first place.

Try the activity below to test your knowledge about recycling by adding the correct items to the correct bin:

RecyclingRecycling is important for you and your family at home, at your school, in the car and when you are

heading out to the ground to watch the Swans!

15 16

At the Sydney Swans, this is what Lewis Jetta does to reduce his waste and encourage recycling:

Recycling

If you recycle 1 tonne of paper, you are saving 13 trees, 2.5 barrels of oil,

4100kWh of electricity, 4 cubic metres of landfill and 31,870 litres of water!

Your HouseThere are many things you can do in your own home to reduce your impact on the environment.

17 18

This is what the Sydney Swans suggest you do to reduce your environmental impact at home:

RecyclingWhat can you do?

How much do you contribute to the waste generated by your school? You may not realise it, but your lunchbox could be filled with pre-packaged items that contribute to landfill.

Conduct the lunchbox audit activity below to see how you stack up.

Open up your lunchbox and have a look inside. What items can you identify that are either wrapped or pre-packaged? Make a list.

Looking at your list, can you think of any ways you can cut down on the amount of packaging and wrapping?

Talk to your mum and dad about what goes into your lunchbox and your family’s grocery shopping list. About 1/3 of Australia’s domestic waste is made up of packaging materials. Encourage your family to think about this when making decisions at the supermarket.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Leave your car at home and walk to the shops.

Use a couch blanket instead of turning up the heating.

Don’t leave the fridge door open too long.

Use a lamp when reading in bed and not the main light.

Install solar panels on your roof that harness the clean

energy from the sun.

Install insulation batts in your ceiling to keep your house cooler in summer and warmer in winter.

Turn everything off at the switch not just on

the appliance.

Press the half flush instead of the full.

Be quick in the shower and don’t leave the water running when brushing your teeth.
