From the Desk of Dr. Victoria Cheers to all of our wonderful mothers!

It feels like I just graduated from dental school yesterday. I can’t believe I have

been in practice for more than fifteen years! My practice philosophy has changed

dramatically after being a mother of two. Before having kids, I always preferred

parents to stay away from their children while placing braces on or doing adjust-

ments. I was afraid parents would ask too many questions and baby their kids too

much, and therefore would affect our process of seeing patients. I would pray that

all the parents stay in the reception area and never come to the back area to talk

to me!

Motherhood is amazing, and having kids has transformed me completely! The love

of mothers for their children is just unconditional. I now always invite our parents to

be with our patients while we are doing adjustments in the back office. I used to

mock in my mind a mom holding her child’s hands tightly while I was placing the

braces on their teeth. Now I know how nervous that mom is after becom-

ing a mother myself! After all, having braces for a life long beautiful smile

is a big and life changing thing! Moms want to be a part of the life chang-

ing experience and it is truly an amazing moment. It is literally “priceless!”

I used to place blame on patients about their loose appliances, I now em-

power and encourage our patients to stay in control and take good care of

their braces.

I love all of my patients, and I treat all patients like I would my own daugh-

ters, because I understand how much we parents love our children! Ia am

now more patient , loving, compassionate, and sometimes maybe over

sensitive. Don’t feel embarrassed if your little ones run around in our of-

fice; We love kids! I am always trying to give our patients and parents

100% attention, even though you may see me moving around among

patients especially in the busy after school hours. Please don’t hesitate to

grab me should you have any concerns or successes you would like to

share!

Cheers to all the mothers in the world!

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta according to package instruc-

tions; drain well.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp and sauce mixture and

cook,—stirring occasionally—until pink (about 2 minutes). Stir in pasta and gently

Patient of the Month Meet Max Kegley, a fifth grader who

has been a patient of Dr. Victoria for 3

years. When meeting Max, people

have always noticed three things: his

uniquely pointed eyebrows , his humor-

ous quick wit and his love of

knowledge.

Dr. Victoria and Max have always

shared a special relationship. He often

prepares a riddle for her and the staff

on each visit. He prides himself on

“making everyone laugh AND learn

something” he says. He can also be

found entertaining other patients—

sharing interesting facts, even some-

times dancing in the game area while

waiting his turn. He usually finds a way

to talk his mom into letting him make

hot cocoa in the Keurig!

Max’s love affair with books began ear-

ly. After mimicking his mother reading

“Green Eggs and Ham,” Max was read-

ing independently by age 4. In kinder-

garten, he joined the first grade class

during reading. That year, he took 2nd

place in his school’s Spelling Bee. He

had earned countless certificates for

reading and subsequently successfully

AR testing on large quantities of high-

level books. He began reading the Har-

ry Potter series in 1st grade and com-

pleted it in 2nd grade, where he spent a

good portion of the day with the 5th

grade class for Reading and Social

Studies. At the end of 2nd grade his

teachers recommended Max skip the

3rd grade! Max and his family decided

to keep Max with his classmates. He

achieved his school’s highest reading

level certificate in the 3rd grade, some-

thing not usually completed until the

end of 5th grade! At the end of 3rd

grade, he earned a rare perfect schore

on the reading portion of the CRT Test!

Max then joined the GATE (gifted and

talentedprogram, where he flourished

in programs such (contd. P. 3)

as dissection courses where he got to dissect a

frog!

This past December, Max’s design and essay

of AquaDuck earned 2nd place, winning him

$150 in a YES! Plumbing Water Conservation

Contest.

Max has always served his fellow students and

community in any way he can, and has been

commended at school for his efforts. Each

morning he helps set up the flag and PA sys-

tem at school for the morning gathering and

announcements. He has also been the school

photographer for 3 years, and even helps in the

lunchroom!

Max has earned a spot on the honor roll every

year, and since the 2nd grade, he has helped

other students learn to read.

He can be seen in the halls with his favorite

fiction series—from Aretmis Fowl to the Hunger

Games— inspiring his peers. Max now reads

above a college level!

Max currently enjoys listening to John Oliver’s

podcast on topics ranging from ancient civiliza-

tions to current politics and advancements in

technology.

Science, Technology, Reading, and family

(especially his brother and sisters) are Max’s

loves. From being an avid pet lover and owner

of 2 dogs, to video games, to learning coding

and how to design and program video games,

to history, to how the human body works, Max

loves life and wants to know everything about

it.

As for the eyebrows—well you can thank his

mom for that, she’s got the same ones—just

don’t tell her we told you!
